  1. Hmm, really? I like the Giants but the Jets are my team and have been since the late '70's, so I don't think I fit this profile!
  2. Post your thoughts on the new GM/HC tandem....
  3. I think Ranaudo has potential. He only has 7 games in the big leagues, but was 14-4 in Pawtucket last year with a 2.61 ERA. Needs to work on his control a bit, but he is someone I'd like to see get a shot as a starter if we need one.
  4. Craig would play first.... But I would rather keep Napoli as well, he is important to our success this year.
  5. I think that 1) Washington is going to trade one of their starters, if not now, then before the trade deadline (but probably sooner) and 2) the Sox will be their trading partner for a starter. Of course the Nats are going to say they have no plans to trade a starter, and of course Ben is gong to say that he's comfortable going into the season with the status quo. It is, after all, January 20th.
  6. Punctuation is important! I don't think they won 140+ games in 1992....
  7. I like Kelly, I think he has some upside and he seems to be a battler, unlike Buchholz, who tends to cave in if he doesn't have his best stuff.
  8. Drew signs with Yankees for $5 million plus. Guess he will play second base.....
  9. I never viewed him as a HOFer when he played. Without looking at his stats, my recollection is that he was never a dominant force like, say, Jim Rice was, although he had a ton of seasons with 30+ HR's. Maybe because his best seasons were in Toronto. He undoubtedly had power but seems to be more of a compiler due to playing 17 seasons....
  10. Same team that offered Chase Headley $68 million, I am guessing..... How did that work out?
  11. Ok, let's stop giving Dan Shaughnessy ideas for a new book, guys.....
  12. This is complete nonsense! ;-) Merry Christmas, everyone!
  13. I think this was a great deal for the Sox - trading what WMB IS (vs what he could be) for a solid back-up catcher who can hit a bit. WMB wasn't going to sniff the big club with the Sox, and Ben turned it ionto a good trade for us.
  14. The problem is, I think they Sox have higher expectations than 'nothing'.... And by making that assumpption, allows them to think they have enough starting pitching...
  15. Thought they were looking for a LH-hitting catcher. Oh well, seems like a decent deal for WMB, as we need a veteran back-up catcher.
  16. Me likely. If this line-up could be trotted out for 150 games, that would be wonderful.
  17. If he stops that $#@&* sliding into first base, he'll be fine. Seems like that is how he always injures himself, then aggravates in the field.
  18. Not at the El Phoenix Room, no.....
  19. Dang, I missed a lot on this thread...! Re: North End - most amazing sight for me, as someone who went to school in Boston, lived there for 5 years afterwards then left - going back, standing at the foot of Hanover St and turing around and seeing the skyline, not the Central Artery..... What a change. Oh, and I got engaged at Felicia's... I, too, am of Italian descent, on my Dad's side - his parents came over in the early 1900's. OTOH, I am a WASP on my Mom's side, her ancestors having come over on the Mayflower (William White is my ancestor there). I hate Larry Lucchino. I've always been kind of partial to the Cubbies on the NL side, more so prior to 2004. Lately I've favored the Mets. We used to go to a Mexican restaurant in Brighton called the El Phoenix Room, on Comm Ave. It closed a few years ago. Great food and buckets of Rolling Rock on ice. Love good, authentic Mexican food. I was in Mexico City in 200 and ate very well.
  20. The lineup should have a lot more pop than last year - with Hanley, Panda and a healthy Napoli and Pedroia - and Papi doing his usual damage. I'm more concerned about having a couple guys at the top (and bottom) of the order that can get on base, to turn those solo shots into 2- and 3-run homers....
  21. I have no issue with long-term contracts, if they result in a WS ring. The impact from that would cover the cost of the contracts. But I do prefer the NFL system. But MLB ain't never going to go backwards.
  22. Bogaerts is going to get the chance at SS, which is the right thing to do. The Sox need to see whether he can play a full season there, not moving him around. I think he will succeed and be a really good player for us for a long time.
  23. I've never been a big Shields fan - maybe it's that stupid nickname that turns me off. But given the current rotation (which I like but agree that it is more of a regular-season rotation than playoffs, and depends on a lot of 'if's' coming to fruition), I'd rather see them get Shields than Hamels. Shields only costs them money, and I would rather keep the kids than trade them for someone who hasn't been tested - and succeeded - in 2 tough divisions like Shields has. I wouldn't worry about years 4 and 5 of a 5-year deal. That's 3 years away, and a lot can happen in that time. And it's only money.
  24. I'd like to see hm play a full year at SS, without fear of a shift to third, and see his game, both offensively and defensively. I think he will be fine in both areas. The Sox just need to stop messing with him.
