    Royals are scouring the outfield trade market apparently. Who would likely come back from them in a trade for Duran?

    Another wrinkle to consider is that if he doesn't sign an extension he's going into FA at a time where a lengthy, possibly season-ending work stoppage is about to happen. Easy to say you want to test the open market. Harder when someone puts $400m in front of you and you're almost certainly about to earn nothing for a lengthy period.

    Something to take into account that I've not seen anyone mention - every new collective bargain, the luxury tax resets (even if you've been over a few years in a row), so it wouldn't hurt us to much to be over again this year. There will be no 3rd year penalties.

    I think any change can end up putting you out of rhythm and become a bigger issue. That said, he is a slight pull hitter naturally, so as I said, he'll still hit well at Fenway I'm sure.

    Agreed. I think it's 1st or nothing. If we're getting power elsewhere, I don't dislike it if he only plays 1st. I can live without his power as we need people who can put the damn ball in play. It's a reasonable salary on a 2 year deal. But that takes Alonso out of the equation, and I'm not sure we get Schwarber with the Phillies not wanting him to go, and Masa on the roster. So where does the power we badly need come from if we did this?

    Maybe. Bit concerned about him changing his swing at that age, but either way, his bat will play I'm sure.

    The talk around Alonso is growing stronger with every day. I just hope it's not too long a deal as the guy D is not good.

    How does Marte compare to a back up catcher? Not exactly like for like there. I'm not sure how I feel about trading away Early for him, but I am hoping we spend prospect capital one way or another (and we will). After all, the vast majority of prospects lead to very little. If the conditions are right, you always take the proven thing.

    Yes damn that man and his 4 world series for a town that had none in the 80 odd years before he came.

    Okay, but let's not pretend that they can't get better in the long term and still contend with a deal. They're obviously not signing him long term, and they have a future to think about. Whatever they get back will be good for this year and the future. Of course they're going to see what's available to them, and I imagine, in the end, trade him. In relation to this...as keeps being pointed out by myself and Hugh - no extension, stay away.

    Not sure I'd do any, apart from maybe with Campbell (I don't think a single team takes that on) as you clear 25m and free up 2 fairly useless spots and only if it's reinvested. All in all, feels fairly unrealistic.

    Yeah I think those first two projections are wrong. On the latest Fenway Rundown, Cotillo and McAdams were at pains to point out that our luxury tax numbers are nowhere near as pretty as being portrayed in some places, referencing Stats on twitter and his work - though I can't find it - and saying we have much less to spend than you'd think before that 1st line and that was excluding Lowe. It would be nice to know for sure. Either way, I don't see us getting two big FAs unless we miraculously get Yoshida's money off the books.

    As long as it doesn't sting to badly, I'd happily give away a prospect to get Yoshida off the books (assuming that opens up Schwarber to us). The problem is, I don't think there's a single team that absorbs that contract without it being an excellent prospect.

    We can be absolutely certain the Mets will be in on Skubal in FA. The one thing we're not thinking of - the lockout which is all but certain, happens as Skubal his FA. If the owners push hard for a cap, the players will write off the season, maybe he is open to an extension especially as reports say that the tiger and him were $200m apart. So there's a number and he'll lose out if he has no contract. Pay the price and get it done (this will not happen), and have the best 1-2 punch in the world.

    That being said - I just read this: Ohtani had a career avg .138 in NPB on the fastball. Maybe it's overplayed. I prefer someone else finds out. We need people who can get on base, not strike out merchants who may or may not catch up to fastballs.

    His career average against 93+ mph fastballs is .188. No thanks.

    The number will always get higher than predicted in FA. Especially with the Mets in town. You put $400m in front of him when he's yours, he's probably saying yes. You put $400m in front of him on the open market, the Mets will put $550m.

    Although will take us over the first tax line with several holes still to fill. I mean, I'd do it. 100%. But I don't think JH, will.
