Were the RS not ahead when Sale left the game? And is his small-sample size ERA not exactly what it was during the regular season? Devers didn't hit a home run last night. What an idiot Cora was for starting him. -

So maybe on the Renfroe call, the umps should huddle (as Rays fans insist), and determine how many bases the runner would get, so, say, ... wait ... clearly the guy would have tried for home but in the umpires' collective judgment, because of Renfroe's arm, he would have been out, then Vaz throws to third and HOLY CRAP! DOUBLE-PLAY! The point is, the umps charge is to follow the rule-book. Not to second-guess what happens or should happen or what's going on in players' minds or how the fans will react or what 'fairness' is.

So you're saying that the umpires should make calls one way during regular games, but on season ending games they should make different calls? And on 50/50 potentially game-ending calls, they should do what? Like with a potential winning run crossing the plate, ALWAYS call out in order not to end the season on a close call? (and if it were the tying run, of course, ALWAYS call safe).

Since coming back from TJS, he's 5-1 with an 3.6 ERA, only slightly higher than his career average. I realize that's not good enough for a non-playoff team like NYY, but for the RS, I'll take it.

No it doesn't. We already know there are no clear definitions of a check swing, that all of them are judgment calls, and for swings like this, basically a coin flip. Only die-hard Giants fans or conspiracy theorists would choose this hill to die on.

Sure they could, and would. Maybe from the Giants fans who claim, like two-year olds, it's UNFAIR to end a season on a check-swing.

The goal is not to split in Houston. That may be a realistic hope. But the goal here, as in all sports, is to win them all. That is why Cora is going with Sale and Eovaldi, no?

Yes, of course. 100 WS titles would not make up for following the Sox from the early 50s through the end of the century.

Wow. I was thinking maybe Mike Fornieles might have done something similar. But after he came to Boston (a bit after I started following them), looks like in his heyday, he was pitching between 80 and 120.

Maybe check the various surveys that have been done on this. The arrest rate for NFL players is lower than that of the general population for that age group.

Ha ha! This may go into the 'over-thinking' file. I'm just happy they won, that Devers went beserk, and Schwarber came up with the greatest fist-pump of the year.

It's the only inning I watched and I wondered that too. I also thought they should have walked Shaw before that. Either way, you could end the inning on one swing rather than hope (1) batter #1 does not put the ball into the outfield, and (2) neither of the next two batters gets a hit. I would assume the odds are better for you leaving the force open, but I also assume Cash had the analytics behind him to make that move.
