  1. Ah. Porcello back in his groove.
  2. Article in ESPN today doesn't hold out much hope of PS's problems going away through any will or effort of his own. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/15207437/pablo-sandoval-boston-red-sox-needs-hand-holder-former-trainer-says
  3. Well, I think I disagree with that--the bonuses were small potatoes. My point was that they seemed to be trying to do more than that: humiliate him into retirement, which would have saved them millions. I became an overnight Arod fan.
  4. I realize two days ago was premature ... is it too early for complete panic now?
  5. Agreed. (Wasn't it Mike Greenwell who refused to take money for time he was playing in Japan because he felt he didn't deserve it?) The only reason he should keep that money is so that the RS can't try what the Yankees stupidly tried with Arod in order not to have to fulfill their own terms of his contract--shame him into retiring. So sit your fat ass down there, Panda. Eat hearty. And take one for the team (i.e., the Player's Union and the CBA).
  6. (Oops! I thought you were talking about Sandoval!)
  7. Hey! He's 4 for 5!
  8. Make that 0-4. 3Ks. One ball in play. One walk. That's ... let's see (3 x 3) + 4 + 1 ... pitches that count, plus 1 E plus an assist or two ... times one million ... gotta be about 19million, no?
  9. Wow. Nice line: 0-3 with 3Ks, one error.
  10. Is it too early to go into full panic mode? Because I don't see anything in this rotation besides Price that is preventing me from doing that.
  11. Criticizing a professional athlete for being fat is not 'fat-shaming.' It's not a moral issue (perhaps Sandoval is a fine family man who rescues puppies). It's a performance issue: he can't move the way professional infielders have to move. Basketball prospects might be too short (tough bananas). A distance runner who put on 40 pounds while working tirelessly for The Greater Good is not going to be able to compete on the course. And a player who broke a leg (even if through no fault of his own) will not be able to play. So bench the f** f*** (oops; I mean "him").
  12. The harm is you're not playing the players who have proven to be the best. (I wonder if this is in part why Stephen Drew never seemed to correct whatever went wrong when his avg. plunged to .100 -- why should he bother, since he was playing every day anyway?)
  13. I don't see those "obvious financial reasons" for playing P.S. You are paying two 3B about $20million. That's what you pay regardless of which one you put on the field. Why does it make "financial" sense to play the more expensive one?
  14. Don't worry. All is well. Sandoval says "he has nothing to prove," and undoubtedly he won't.
  15. It isn't unreasonable to imagine JBJ saving a hit every 3-4 games, is it? (He seemed to do at least that well last year.) And since saving a hit in the OF is equivalent to getting one at the plate (is it not?) he would have to be a horrendous hitter to justify leaving him on the bench.
  16. Only the Red sox can argue that their plans have been thwarted and their hopes dashed by players (Ortiz, Shaw, Holt) playing better than expected.
  17. What better end to the season than re-hiring the manager that took two of the highest paid teams in the league to consecutive last place finishes? What 'til 2017!
  18. Alas, the only way they got rid of Crawford's contract was to package him with one of the best players in the league--A.G. Unfortunately, they do not have any 'best players in the league' to help rid themselves of Ramirez' and Sandoval's contracts. Since it's not my money, I'd rather see them just eat as much of those contracts as they have to so that we can watch players who are actually interesting to see play.
  19. Unfortunately, winning ISN'T everything: if it were, many of us would have stopped following the RS 50 years ago. The formula for the Marlins (acquire high priced players then let them go) won one WS, but the organization doesn't have much to show for it in terms of fan support and interest. And I don't care about seeing the next batch of H. Ramirez's and Panda's come through until he finds a bunch that works. There is now a core of young players who are actually interesting to watch: Bradley, Betts, Boggaerts, Holt ... But if the idea is to trade them for yet another 20mill/year .250 hitter or 4.50 ERA big-name starter, it's not a formula for putting pennies in the seats long-term.
  20. I must be missing something. How can you not consider H. Ramirez' contract large?? It's 22million per year through 2019.
  21. They likely don't see what he's doing, or simply disregard the rule. Read the last sentence. "He shall not raise either foot from the ground ... except he may take one step backward, and one step forward with his free foot." No competent speaker of English could misinterpret that sentence. (I realize that excludes ESPN posters with juvenile avatars and middle school humor tags.)
  22. a) The Windup Position. The pitcher shall stand facing the batter, his pivot foot in contact with the pitcher’s plate and the other foot free. From this position any natural movement associated with his delivery of the ball to the batter commits him to the pitch without interruption or alteration. He shall not raise either foot from the ground, except that in his actual delivery of the ball to the batter, he may take one step backward, and one step forward with his free foot. This is pretty clear. The pitch is obviously illegal, and I'm really surprised they don't call it. It's possible they don't see how egregious his leap forward is in real time.
  23. That is clearly not legal. You obviously cannot run over the mound and throw the ball, and obviously you cannot jump toward the plate then throw the ball. Come on, umps!
  24. Nice clip during the game of Napoli taking 'soft-toss' b.p. and still making lousy contact.
  25. Cool. At least Napoli is being told that, unlike Drew, Farrell's man-crush on him is insufficient to keep him in the lineup with a .150 ave.
