  1. Wow. Your rapier-like wit is clearly blunted on the stone of my understanding. But since we agree (HRs are what get it done, not 'small ball'), then why on earth are you arguing for the bunt? (just to argue?)
  2. Yup. I'll concede your point. If the only alternatives are (1) give up 1 out, or (2) give up 2, then you're right. Is this what you mean by hitters 'busting it right'?
  3. Let's see: I have a runner on first. It takes 3 bases to score. There are 3 outs per inning. Should I adopt a strategy that gives up one run for one base? (Hmmm. Tough one).
  4. Ah those unwritten rules. Like Keats' unheard melodies, I suppose (as in some lines of work employees get rated by friendly bosses on such things as "heart" or "intent" or "potential"). All b.s. but excellent at justifying all kinds of irrational and stupid behavior.
  5. Don't know what was going on in Pedroia's head. But I assumed, given what he'd already said about the slide, and the fact that he and M. know each other, he was just saying something along the lines: "Hey, don't look at me. I'm over it. They're not." Not trying to throw them under the bus at all; maybe the opposite (We're teammates, and now you've got bigger troubles than just me?) Anyway. Guy slides. Guy gets pissed. Another guy gets pissed. Then another guy gets pissed and ... So it's probably useless to analyze this more precisely than that, since no one in these situations acts or speaks rationally.
  6. ? Can you give a quick explanation of the conditions you note in sentence 2? Thanks
  7. Just remember. These are merely professional athletes. Not bad-ass tough-guy internet posters like ourselves.
  8. In my experience, those who complain most vociferously about what is taught in universities don't spend much time in them.
  9. Sprained right knee for Pablo. Not going to help.
  10. Yeah, I seem to recall that. That word doesn't seem as racially-charged as those that were talking about here: 'grit' 'dirt dog' etc. and to a lesser extent 'athletic'. (Btw, I don't doubt that Luis was never called that, even though he, like nearly all professional athletes, was obviously 'athletic' according to any reasonable understanding of that word!)
  11. Fault? There's no fault in you. We're just two dooffuses discussing sports (I see my last post sounded snide--unintended).
  12. Yeah, because after Manny left, Ortiz really sucked for the rest of his career.
  13. OK. Fair enough. as in "these particular 4 or 5 errors" don't mean much. I'm not sure what else we have to go on, though. I've seen him make some decent plays, no spectacular ones (although I can't say they haven't existed).
  14. Not to put too fine a point on things, but what in the world does SOB mean? (in addition to its classic meaning)
  15. I can actually remember exactly where I was for that game, but no, I don't remember the exact language the announcers used. Do you have a tape?
  16. I don't know ... That pop-up Bradley hit yesterday had a bit of carry.
  17. How are errors "not indicative of anything"? Or is this the Frank Malzone theory of old: he made the most errors because he got to the most balls.
  18. Yeah, likely. Because JF seems to me a traditionalist. And this theory of the k-ball's ineffectiveness (and it is only a theory) involves science, that is to say, basic meteorology. I'm pretty sure JF, like all baseball commentators I have ever heard, would talk vaguely about the "heavier" air during wet days, which in turn prevents the ball from traveling and would slow down the kball. (This of course is completely untrue--air in high pressure areas is heavier. But --has anyone ever checked it?--it may be true that hitters, for other reasons, don't hit the ball as far in damp weather.)
  19. Rain = low-pressure = less air resistance = k-ball floats in straight as string.
  20. Nor did they call him a dirt dog. He was ... 'colorful'.
  21. Ha ha. Nope. I've just never heard a black or Hispanic player called that. Or described as showing "grit." They are, instead, "athletic."
  22. So how come "dirt dogs" are always white folks?
  23. I don't think anyone is saying "bench him," but I would certainly rather rely on the facts of his production (which unfortunately are now ambiguous) than on "eye test" (which cannot really be argued one way or the other).
  24. Oh I see what you're referring to. My bad. But I suppose the answer would be, whatever statistic we're looking at, I would expect his performance this year to be more like the worst year he had (in Boston) than the average year that included those very good years with SF. (It's obviously pointless to argue this at this point in teh season!)
  25. Are you not counting his one full year with RS? (.240).
