    Tampa Bay may have been competitive, but they also have one of the lowest attendance rates in MLB. Is this the model of success the RS want to follow? Getting rid of your best players may be great for 'fantasy-ball' fans, but it's not great for fans who like to watch baseball and pay money to do so.

    Any examples of that? I can't think of any, although there certainly are players who were overpaid and did not play up to their salaries. Don't most people pretty much "do what they do" regardless of what they get paid? A competitive athlete will try to win, whether he's paid, over-paid, or 'insulted' by the offer he gets, no?

    Just a question: the CBA does not allow renegotiating (or 'restructuring' as the euphemism goes) a contract at any point during the life of that contract, correct? Thus the only way to get rid of an 'opt out' provision in a contract would be to have the player exercise that opt out and negotiate a new contract, right?

    I get the fact that (fans? GMs? owners?) don't like long-term contracts. Great. So here's an alternative: you can have the MVP at something below fair market value for a nice short-term contract (one year) w/ no commitments beyond that. Why on earth would you pass that up?? For the 'future'? 2020 IS the future. If I were as enamored of "prospects" as those here, I would simply stay home and follow the SeaDogs.

    I'm confused. The Dodgers are putting together a package for Betts. But how do they have time to deal for him, since they are busy planning their World Series parades for the past, what, three seasons? Then too, since obviously the only reason LAD didn't win the WS on tthe field, but only in tthe hearts and minds of good people all over the globe, was that Betts was being given the signs, why would they want such a mediocre player on their team?

    Of course it "may in fact" (!) be happening. A giant earthworm "may in fact" be under Fenway Park right now, preparing to swallow it up. As you say, "who knows?"

    But then, if we "won't stand for that," what does that mean? What will we do? Not go to games? (So?) Not listen to the radio? Refuse to read the box score? Write angry e-mails to JH or to the Globe?

    Good thing we on the internet are so much more clever than any of the lawyers representing the Players Union. He could also retire and have the RS hand him a check for a few 10s of millions, you know, under the table? They'd never figure that out either. Or why not just restructure ALL contracts--paying the players half what they're making now, with the rest handed over in unmarked bills? Luxury tax problem solved.

    Well, if I had a wife and kids (which I do not have and do not want), I would certainly value my relationship with them more than I would value $12 million (which I also do not have and do not want).

    I suppose congressional hearings are in the works, as there is really nothing pressing facing this country right now. A trillion or two in debt, war, billionaires presiding over poverty, 30-50 thousand gun deaths, mass incarcerations-- all that can surely wait. Besides, the LA city council wants its joint parade (oops, wrong word) with UCF.

    Really? In my experience, the only time an accused (i.e., any of us) screams in high moral indignation is when they know they are guilty.

    It's not a naive question. I believe the game feed is on delay. But any 'fans' could set up someone in center field with binoculars and transmit signs to a buddy behind home plate. (Hell, the Giants essentially did this for the famous Bobby Thompson HR!) MLB has reacted as during the steroid era. They knew perfectly well what was going on and did nothing about it. Then, when they could no longer keep their head in the sand, began all this idiotic moral posturing, knowing perfectly well that the homer fans in all other 30 teams would share in the contrived 'outrage'. The casualties? two or three of the most prominent and respected figures in the sport.

    Yeah, I realize that. We actually agree that the diff. between ch/non-ch. is 'arbitrary' (in the literal sense). (Ha ha! cool on the Latin.)

    Given your deep reading of medieval philosophers, you want to give me the actual reference for that? Or at least explain to me in all those examples which is cheating and which is not, since you claim the difference is clear cut? You might also detail for me the sports you have been involved in where no 'cheating' (under any definition) took place, bec. I don't know of one.
