    Not sure I understand. If you ran out the 2020 team, which we are saying for yucks equals the 2018 team, how does the payroll/tax/etc. affect its performance for this year? (You pay the tax if you have to and deal with it later).

    None is this is going to assuage anyone. Pulling out anecdotes of the good ole days (when the point is they WEREN'T good ole days, e.g., Musial), or invoking the Nomar trade (where they got back a hell of a lot more than they did this time--well, I admit, they didn't get anyone with sexual assault charges against them--there is that) won't do squat. Find me someone who was against the trade before who, after hearing Henry, is now persuaded. As for your assurance that Mookie will be back in a year, I'll take that bet. You name the stakes.

    Cheating occurs in every sport I've every played: football, hockey, baseball, tennis, squash, golf, bridge, poker... others I can't even think of--and I haven't played these at a very high level. You learn to deal with it. How is it that professional athletes seem never to have encountered this and have absolutely no clue as to how to combat it except to wail like three-year-olds "It's not FAIR!!!!"

    There's also an article in ESPN about various Dodgers' outrage (who apparently think that teams should win the old-fashioned way--by buying a championship). But the last thing a boxing referee tells fighters is "Protect yourself at all times." And if these dumb-ass after-the-fact moralists didn't bother to change signs even though sign-stealing has been part of the game since the beginning, then that's on them.

    Well, if you mean drug use, then of course you are right, given that drugs are ubiquitous. (I almost mis-read "lived next to forever in Maine" as meaning you 'lived next to Maine for a long time', which would mean New Hampshire. What a relief to go back and read it correctly, as I wouldn't wish New Hampshire residence on anyone!)

    Don't you think that all the time this is taking suggests that Manfred is finding evidence for what pretty much every baseball fan and player knew all along? that sign-stealing is prevalent all through the league, and the Astros were only distinguished by (1) their sophistication (computer geeks decoding signs--which probably aren't thatt complex in the first place, given the mental capacities of pitchers and catchers), and (2) the crudeness of the execution. What he is also finding, unless he has blinders, is that all players KNEW sign-stealing was going on, as evidenced by the many many attempts to overcome it (remember the constant mound-visits of two years ago?) The shock and outrage expressed by some is ludicrous.

    You saw two people shooting up? And conclude from that that "all" homeless people are high? People use drugs--even people with houses, even people (scandalously enough) who post on the internet (not that anyone on this board does, of course)--and the problem is as bad in, say, Maine as it is in CA.

    The farm's fine! ... at least, now that they have the option of sending Verdugo down there to hit next to Castillo. Of course, that won't help the Seadogs much, which is my major concern. But maybe putting together a package of Sale and Boggaerts could return a good AA reliever.

    Oh please. this makes it sound as if Mookie traded himself. He didn't. And so far, the evidence we have is that the ones who were most concerned about money were JH and Bloom. Not blaming them, really. Bloom did what he was hired to do. But when you hand over a business decision to a bean-counter, you can expect beans. The one thing we can be sure never happened was a directive to Bloom to keep Boston's great relationship with its fan base intact.

    I think you and I have different views of what constitutes (or can be excused as being) a "dumb decision"! I'm sure we both made plenty of those. I'm also pretty sure neither of us was ever in a room, drunk or passed out, where an underage kid was being beaten up then later sexually assaulted by our buddies. Another remarkable and jaw-dropping detail in this story is the way Dodger "fixers" determined that the way to handle it was to invite the girl to dinner with the players involved.

    Odd, but even when I saw it happen, I always assumed he was just spouting off yet another "it's all about the team" sports cliche: 'Don't look at me; when you throw at any guy on the team, you have to answer to the team.' I was actually surprised that anyone (i.e., 'everyone'!) took it as they did. DId any of his team-mates accuse him of that? (I don't think they did, but I could be wrong.) And did DP ever say anything about it?

There are even people (those 'one guys'!) who would tarnish Kobe's legacy by pointing out that he admitted, in writing, to raping a woman in Denver. So I don't get it. In my view, you and other apologists should either state outright that you do not believe these reports (that's fine, but you haven't done that yet); or simply state outright that rape isn't a problem for you, and you're fine associating with such people or cheering them on. I mean, who among us hasn't invited a 17-year-old runaway to our hotel, got her drunk, then filmed our buddies having sex 'with' her once she's passed out? By the way, I don't give a crap about V's "image." I DO give a crap that he was involved in this.
