  1. I believe that verse makes precisely the opposite point of the 'Greeks bearing gifts' cliche. But that is not unusual with Bible-thumping admonitions.
  2. Don't wait. Fire him now! Sox need to be more pro-active.
  3. Hey, youngster, since I doubt you're as old as me. No one uses the term "commie" or "communist" any more (well, except perhaps in reference to soccer).
  4. I'm confused. The Dodgers are putting together a package for Betts. But how do they have time to deal for him, since they are busy planning their World Series parades for the past, what, three seasons? Then too, since obviously the only reason LAD didn't win the WS on tthe field, but only in tthe hearts and minds of good people all over the globe, was that Betts was being given the signs, why would they want such a mediocre player on their team?
  5. Of course it "may in fact" (!) be happening. A giant earthworm "may in fact" be under Fenway Park right now, preparing to swallow it up. As you say, "who knows?"
  6. But then, if we "won't stand for that," what does that mean? What will we do? Not go to games? (So?) Not listen to the radio? Refuse to read the box score? Write angry e-mails to JH or to the Globe?
  7. Good thing we on the internet are so much more clever than any of the lawyers representing the Players Union. He could also retire and have the RS hand him a check for a few 10s of millions, you know, under the table? They'd never figure that out either. Or why not just restructure ALL contracts--paying the players half what they're making now, with the rest handed over in unmarked bills? Luxury tax problem solved.
  8. Well, if I had a wife and kids (which I do not have and do not want), I would certainly value my relationship with them more than I would value $12 million (which I also do not have and do not want).
  9. Unfortunately, there will always be the "Dempsters" of the world trying to prove that their presumed moral integrity is superior to their talent.
  10. I suppose congressional hearings are in the works, as there is really nothing pressing facing this country right now. A trillion or two in debt, war, billionaires presiding over poverty, 30-50 thousand gun deaths, mass incarcerations-- all that can surely wait. Besides, the LA city council wants its joint parade (oops, wrong word) with UCF.
  11. Really? In my experience, the only time an accused (i.e., any of us) screams in high moral indignation is when they know they are guilty.
  12. Ah yes, if only Pedroia were as bad-ass tough as your basic internet poster.
  13. It's not a naive question. I believe the game feed is on delay. But any 'fans' could set up someone in center field with binoculars and transmit signs to a buddy behind home plate. (Hell, the Giants essentially did this for the famous Bobby Thompson HR!) MLB has reacted as during the steroid era. They knew perfectly well what was going on and did nothing about it. Then, when they could no longer keep their head in the sand, began all this idiotic moral posturing, knowing perfectly well that the homer fans in all other 30 teams would share in the contrived 'outrage'. The casualties? two or three of the most prominent and respected figures in the sport.
  14. Loved watching Jerry Casales hit. Even Dick Raddatz got some good swings, no? (But it really isn't baseball!)
  15. Yeah, I realize that. We actually agree that the diff. between ch/non-ch. is 'arbitrary' (in the literal sense). (Ha ha! cool on the Latin.)
  16. Given your deep reading of medieval philosophers, you want to give me the actual reference for that? Or at least explain to me in all those examples which is cheating and which is not, since you claim the difference is clear cut? You might also detail for me the sports you have been involved in where no 'cheating' (under any definition) took place, bec. I don't know of one.
  17. Balderdash! There is no absolute difference between 'cheating/non-cheating'. How is spending 5x as much as competing teams 'fair'? Isn't that cheating? (not in baseball, but it is not allowed in NFL or NBA). What about holding in football? (illegal! happens every play. Is surreptitiously holding an example of cheating?) How about tennis? yelling is illegal, grunting is ok? Using a timeout to ice a kicker--gamesmanship? or cheating? Did you ever hear Michael Jordan talk about the illegal hand-checks he used to use on driving opponents to throw their shot off? (SHould he be banned?) Flopping on 3-pt. shots? Goalie interference in hockey? Quick-pitching in baseball or quick-serving in tennis? Throwing inside in baseball? How about at a batter's chin? Paying a player in the NCAA or giving athletes benefits not available to other students? (this happens every day). How about admitting athletes with few to no academic skills to college in the first place? ...
  18. This is a classic case of 'begging the question' (i.e., assuming one's conclusion).
  19. The word 'cheating' should be banned from all sports talk.
  20. Of course. That''s what Woods claims to have done at LA. Were other pitchers too stupid, proud, or naive to do the same? Just out of curiosity: show of hands. Who of you who has played sports: (1) has NEVER cheated. (2) has NEVER played opponents who cheat.
  21. Exactly. What amazes me is the feigned shock of players, fans, and writers. In sports, players cheat. They do. And anyone who has played sports on any level has experienced this, whether it's football, baseball, golf, tennis, cards, or tiddly-winks. What you learn to do is to neutralize it in some way. Are baseball players helpless, morally-pure infants? The last thing a boxing referee says before the fight is "Protect yourself at all times." Enough of this sanctimonious hand-wringing.
  22. Karras and Hornung. Much later. (late 50s? early 60s? Durocher's suspension was before my time--40s?) As I recall, they were only suspended for a year.
  23. Oh for God's sake stop. Cora has the respect of his players, is extremely well-spoken, has done a lot for the game and for social causes as well. Pete Rose is a cheap-shot artist who deliberately tried to injure other players, a pathological liar who cannot even form a coherent sentence. (That said, put the scum-bag in the Hall of Fame--one thing he could do was hit a baseball.)
  24. What? Surely you aren't implying that you've been doing this for free??? I make $7000/month commenting on sports boards. I'm happy to enroll you in my seminar and share my secrets on how this is done.
