  1. Swihart has always been their most talented catcher all around ... but injuries threatened to completely destroy that. It has been a happy accident that his contractual status forced the Red Sox to keep him. That said, he has been good and deserves credit for that. - and there is a reasonable argument that he should keep playing when Vasquez returns.
  2. Right. The Yankee bullpen is excellent - especially bridging from the 6th to the end. But no regular season bullpen is really that well equipped to hold up a team if a starter can't escape the 5th.
  3. Pomeranz has a bit of that thing that Matsuzaka had when he was with Boston (not comparing their qualities just style) ... even the good starts are fairly painful to watch, and he ends up throwing a ton of pitches. The results are there - but you miss some of the bulk you'd like with a really good starting pitcher. I think a good way to think of it - at least for 2018 is that Cora isn't really locked into his #4 and #5 choices (and injuries have dictated that) - and frankly, there is no reason for us to have those locked down. Really the operating question is do you trust a guy to get through the lineup twice?
  4. my favorite stat was the Yankees oen not allowing more than 6 runs in a game all season - until they gave up 7 in the 4th inning. The Red Sox could use more bullpen depth - not because they are lacking but because this is baseball and you can never have too many arms. It'd be good for them to revisit the Francisco Liriano talks over waiver time.
  5. Yes - he fought mental illness to get back ... good for him Johnson has made a case for the #5 starter - but I think we have to dispense with those definitions ... at least for the rest of this season. We know Sale, Porcello and Price are solid. If Rodriguez were healthy he'd be clearly in the mix - but I will not make any guesses on his actual health. But more importantly, between Wright, Johnson, Pomeranz, Rodriguez and Velasquez - Cora can cobble together starts. Heck, in the postseason I don't Cora will be shy at all about piggybacking Johnson and somebody else and making a Game 4 a bullpen game.
  6. The marginal difference between picks 30 and 40 is almost zero. The surplus penalties means Henry has to put off buying another plane. SAD!
  7. Yeah Boston is still going to fish for relievers because everybody is doing that. If they could find another innings soaking starter who could be swung to the pen in October that would be good too.
  8. Anaheim picked up a portion of Kinsler's salary - the Red Sox had to give them bodies for Anaheim to do that. It makes perfect sense.
  9. Nor should it - if Henry is willing to pay whooppee ... and the draft pick penalty is essentially nil. (the marginal difference between picks 30 and 40 is almost zero). I think the price has to be right though - and Dombrowski clearly believes in Devers.
  10. I think there is more reason to believe in him that not for sure. At the same time he is a 2 month rental - and you have to price him accordingly.
  11. No they're not. They are rich - now there will be some decisions ... but nobody is being let go because the Red Sox CAN'T do something. Henry has to spend money - sad! But the draft pick penalty is barely punitive (if the team you are buying is in fact actually good).
  12. No single player can move the needle that much. Besides, the Red Sox are pretty good right now, and they have enough depth that they can actually just not play Bradley if Cora loses confidence in him.
  13. The Sox gave up a couple of guys they won't miss. It is probably the cost of Anaheim eating some of Kinsler's money. Once Philips got hurt (and even if he didn't) contingencies for 2B were thin. If Kinsler doesn't work out - the Sox can probably fake it with Nunez and Holt anyway. But Kinsler clearly has much more upside than those guys. Just a smart low key move for Dombrowski.
  14. Why? Boston is up 4 games on the Astros.
  15. A ballpark where fly balls go to die
  16. Beeks COULD be quite good for Tampa ... but his style of pitching is much more of a fit in Tampa than Boston.
  17. Also the slide of Moreland is overrated - it was why Boston traded for Pearce. It's both a lefty masher and a solid hedge against Moreland just being Moreland. It's still an effective platoon.
  18. Agreed - he has always been their highest ceiling catcher.
  19. They needed a warm body to get them through the fall - Eovaldi qualifies. He can pitch in the postseason if necessary - although you are going to have a quick hook and use "all star rules" in his outings.
  20. Swihart played 2B in high school ... I am surprised they have not given him some reps there yet.
  21. He has the Joe Kelly thing - where his fastball is straight and does not get the results you would think from the radar gun.
  22. Take the time? Players do not have infinite talent level. You make the best assessment you can. He did not miss bats in his big league trials - and he was outstanding in AAA. He might be a 4A sort of guy. Moreover - a guy like him (command guy, doesn't miss a lot of bats) will probably play up in Tampa.
  23. Probably - but as Alex Speier noted who cares? The draft penalty for the Red Sox is very small. If Henry wants to pay the 62.5% marginal rate, who am I to stop him. The Red Sox - given their current "reloading" stage on the farm - can't get guys with prospects alone. Their ability to absorb money will have to come into play.
  24. That is an All-Star level changeup - the command came and went but the stuff was ace level.
