  1. I think the years are right - dollars might be higher. Teams not giving him a ton this past offseason made sense ... his performance in Boston was so aberrational, that you had to bet the under. But now, there is a reasonable history of him being a good starter. What prevents Hill from being a $20M pitcher is his not being able to (or not having demonstrated) churn out 180 IP
  2. I think there is an average starter in there ... but the first thing you gotta do is throw strikes, and right now he doesn't. He was not throwing strikes at Pawtucket either.
  3. Shaw's biggest problem is that his OBP has basically collapsed since the end of May ... while the July OPS looked good, it was held up by the "S" (where "O" is the much more important part of the mix)
  4. A real plus changeup - but need the other stuff to click too. Really fastball command is poor - and it is hard to be much of anything without decent fastball command regardless of velocity. He gets a lot of swing and miss - so it is really a command more than stuff thing.
  5. I think Jackie is fine - he is a bit of a Mike Napoli offensively. So these slumps will happen, but he still walks enough to not be a zero.
  6. Owens was a good prospect who was "throwing more strikes" away from being a real somebody - because he gets swings and misses in the strike zone, which not everybody can do. Alas.
  7. the peripherals have been sagging - and he has not shown any sort of ability to do anything that doesn't involve being spoonfed saves
  8. the spaghetti monster put Young on this earth to hit lefties. It is why the Sox signed him - as a hedge against Bradley and Holt. When he returns he will play vs every lefty. And if there is a drought in finding lefties to play, he will spell a regular too to keep him sharp. He is lousy against RHP, but in short stretches, his power and patience allow him to not be a total zero in occasional appearances.
  9. Paps has this problem that he is not good anymore
  10. At that point he was an average-above average QB. I have a soft spot for him because he did lead them in the AFC Title game - and was integral during the mid-late 90s when the team rose up from national joke to a legitimate factor. Belichick at that point chose Brady (who at that point really just threw checkdowns) not doing anything stupid over Bledsoe who (as a veteran) bristled a bit at that sort of deal.
  11. He is a baseball player - baseball players have rough spells - that's baseball. None of that is revelatory. The bet the org has made (due to his maturity level, his SEC background, and how he has handled stuff being thrown at him in the past) that he won't soil himself when baseball happens to him. You can see the Matt Carpenter-esque sort of offensive profile ...
  12. I disagree - this was not brief
  13. He clearly has not integrated Benintendi seamlessly or anything
  14. The callup period will be big to be able to audition some guys and figure out what we have. The way the team is shaking down, Price and Porcello seem reliable bets innings wise so Farrell can take a Johnny Wholestaff approach with the rest of the games. That worked for the Royals. This team is a real contender. Not a flawless contender - but I'm in.
  15. It took until it was late ... and when you actually do get to small samples, some more short sighted changes make sense ... after all there aren't many games left. Indeed the Benoit GS raised questions about the right pitcher against the right guy - granted Ortiz is good.
  16. Oh, Boras all the way if I had a chance ...
  17. He doesn't have a second pitch ... that means there is not the raw stuff. The issue with Joba was that the Yankees refused to commit one way or another. It has the smell of Torre winning a tussle with Cashman. (or George breaking said tie) Bring him up for the stretch is fine - worked well for David Price. It was the rest of it which was stupid.
  18. I meant the top of the 9th!
  19. Don't have to choose - and Betts comes a year later anyway. It's a good problem to have. Team's starting 8 is in very good shape.
  20. The suitors I don't know - and the salary was in line with the market value (a bit on the high side of normal, but whatever). There are very very few FA deals which are "value" because of the winners curse thing - i.e. how a high bidder in an auction is almost always "overpaying".
  21. No. Once Leon goes into the game, the DH goes poof. The pitcher bats in the catcher's spot then.
  22. I share your annoyance - we almost stole a game where we rested Pedroia, Papi and somehow had two catchers in the lineup at the same time. That would have been really good to get. Basically if they can get the split here, they've done their job. It's the next 16 games which will be particularly important in determining their fate.
  23. Xander's struggles show that he is not at the super elite level yet - just really darn good. $30M a year for him is not at all unreasonable - the Sox don't have to pay it due to lack of leverage Bogaerts has for now. But honestly, a 5/120 extension would be sensible for both sides. I expect them to try to rope in him or Betts for that sort of deal this offseason.
  24. There was a fair basis for it - he made tons of contact, he had a spray chart and inside out swing which made it look like he could do Boggs-ish things with the Monstah. He also was young enough that you were buying less decline than your average premium FA. Obviously none of this worked - but anybody who said the Sox should have seen this level of disaster coming are being disingenuous.
  25. This - also with his age and his spray charts - there was a reasonable (i.e. not one you had to agree with, but one which was defensible without sounding crazy) basis for optimism.
