  1. A couple of bad innings ruined this weekend - at the same time, they hit the Royals pretty well ... better than teams are generally used to. Also Bogaerts got the good part of the bat on a lot of pitches. Really, the "playoff rotation" looks okay ... a couple reliable innings hosses, and a couple of guys you should be able to get through the order a couple of times. But finding a pen that can click.
  2. The bullpen has stunk too often. Now, your best bet for fixing it? You have to look at the September callup period as an audition for guys. When the Red Sox get to October (let's hope) - you have to think that Porcello, Price and Wright are going to be your guys who will have the chance to face 27 hitters (i.e. three times through the order). We know that effectiveness goes down each time through and significantly the third and especially fourth time through. (hitter comfort x diminished stuff) Rodriguez and whomever is #5 you put on the 18 batter plan and then plan accordingly. Quicker hooks, matchup dependencies and such. Buchholz could be a lynchpin (ducking lightning bolt) - as someone who can actually face more than three batters with a little less fear. At the same time if Koji returns - a lot of this gets cleaner.
  3. And a lot of them end up being dealt anyway because flags fly forever ... and if you're gonna trade minor league stuff, the volatility with pitchers from the seller view (as well as the scarcity of good young pitchers for the buyer side) makes them sensible to look at
  4. 1. High - but it might not be on Aug 31, since he can be added as an injury replacement to the playoff roster 2. Don't know - I imagine he will get some 3B and some LF
  5. Yankees - yes. Dodgers is a little harder - they have not actually replaced him adequately - and so much of Grienke's dropoff is just going to a worse team in a worse environment, but the general point is sound
  6. I've heard it is kind of straight - at the same time 100 has been his floor - so while hitters can square up a Joe Kelly fastball, this might be a tick above ... he needs another pitch, but his velocity is plus-plus
  7. I fully expect him to - and I think the Red Sox would almost be rooting for it 1. Money is flowing 2. If he opts out, it's because he did well - we like that 3. The Sox get maximum flexibility by him opting out - presumably after good results
  8. One trick pony so far - but most High-A guys don't have a prayer against that trick
  9. It's been a bad month - the others have been good months ... just needs to see the ball go in the hoop a little bit ...
  10. Once he made the mistake - the move probably should have been getting into a pickle and giving Shaw a chance to score ... but I am not blaming him. That is the toughest baserunning play around - when a ball is zipped right at a fielder ... he clearly owned the mistake.
  11. two different drops - hembree's was worse - oh if leon had hung on to that throw
  12. Farrell with a key move managers rarely make - he actually brought in his best guy for the biggest situation, saves be damned.
  13. I am pro bunting for hits. And there are some select late game reasons to sacrifice. (basically a situation where you only want one run) But Outs are baseball's clock ... so wasting time (in this sense) is the biggest crime there is in the game - and stopping the clock as it were is the fundamental object of hitting
  14. All aspects of the industry are smarter now ... in 2016 he probably takes a couple more years to blow out his elbow
  15. industry is a lot smarter now
  16. It's not about his feelings - it's about his body. Even if he is ready to pitch - will he be ready to handle 170 big league innings in 2 years ... you have to bet the under. And his body still has to fill out (it is the best argument for moving Espinoza).
  17. Of course - but for me the situations are pretty small ... and with our team i am very careful about punting chances at crooked numbers
  18. Easier to let Ortiz, Betts or Pedroia do the manufacturing ... LOB correlates with teams that can hit
  19. With the current playoff eligiblity rules, the 40 man is all that matters. They simplified the process to avoid most of the DL hijinks of the past.
  20. He throws a knuckleball ... if the knuckleball feels like rolling out of bed and going to work, things will be fine. If the knuckleball comes down with a cold, or has a bad attitude, it's trouble. Wright is basically a jockey here - on some basic level, it's up to the horse whether to do its thing. I've given up on thinking too much about it.
  21. They have an extra spot already. You could easily move Hanigan to the 60 day DL if you were desperate. Because of the DL, Moncada does not have to be added next week. He just has to be added at some point to be playoff eligible. (thanks Panda!)
  22. The way pitching staffs are used - there would be an opening for a guy who actually could pitch 100 relief innings ... not a long man per se - but somebody who could reliably pitch to 6 or 9 hitters a couple times a week. Buchholz could be valuable there. Either way, good he has found some feel.
  23. I suspect he simply didn't know.
  24. Yes. Although he could also be an injury replacement - and be added to the 40 in September and be playoff eligible on those grounds. (say replacing somebody on the 60 day DL who has served those 60 days already) Because of this I do not expect the Sox to add him ...save the roster spot for a trade So - Moncada could theoretically be added on the last day of the season to the 40-man and then be playoff eligible as a replacement for Sandoval.
