  1. Man .... Sanchez and Hanley for Beckett and Lowell ... that trade was robbery. Big ups to the Sox scouting team however.
  2. Boston is definitely tough on RHP ... I am feeling good about this series.
  3. Also, it was was thought that playing in Fenway is worth .5 to 1 extra run per game.
  4. True that ... but I think that we were talking about defense sans pitching.
  5. I respectfully disagree. Every team in baseball would like to have a Jacoby Ellsbury leading off. This season he hit .320 leading off an inning. Finding players with speed that can also consistently get on base are not so easy to find at the major league level. If they were then every team would have one. Furthermore .... there are 2 seasons ... the regular and post season ... the SB is even more of an asset in the post season when one run and lower scoring games are almost the norm.
  6. When do you not pitch Cabrera away ... this series will be no different but because Cabrera is injured it is Martinez I am most worried about and the Sox should be also.
  7. Boston is clearly the superior defensive team no question. The team with the best defense usually come out on top in most major sports and this will be no different. Boston in 6
  8. Both Drew and Ellsbury were quoted as saying: 'This is the most fun I have ever had playing baseball' or ' This is the most fun team I have ever been on' something to this effect. You can also see it with many of the other players on this team. When you get into intangibles the edge has to go to Boston for this very reason alone. These Sox players like one another and have each others back.
  9. I feel the same .. he is seeing the ball well and making very good contact.
  10. Detroit has issues with Miggy not being healthy ... They need Fielder, Miggy and Martinez in the lineup. If they do use Martinez behind the plate they can DH Miggy and use Paralta and Ingelesis at SS/3B. But from what my friends on this post have said it does not seem likely that Martinez will catch.
  11. I might be wrong on this but I noticed that Lester had begun using his change more in the 2nd half of the season and the results are obvious. The change is my favorite pitch but I caution using it against a talent like Longoria with 2 outs and runners on 2nd and 3rd.
  12. you may be right about that but there is no doubt in my mind that he is one of the top 3 center fielders in the game and Center Field in the outfield is the equivalent of SS in the infield. Ellsbury is a great athlete and whoever he signs with and whatever he gets he deserves all of it. He did not return from broken ribs and shoulder injuries without a lot of effort.
  13. True or False. Players who are near the top of the league in SB's with a .300 avg. and a .320 avg. when leading off an inning are a pain in every pitchers ass? I pitched a little ... until I was 21 and each time I went out to begin a game I was striving for perfection. Never happened. However the longer a pitcher goes without giving up a run the more focused and 'zoned in' he becomes. Baserunners like Ellsbury can break a pitchers heart. There are more intangibles in baseball than fans realize. All the players are human and not just breathing statistics. There was a report that Ellsbury will land in Seattle at 21M per at 6/7 years. If true Ellsbury will not be back in Boston.
  14. IMO ... The 3 outfield positions are unique as are the infield positions. In right you need to have a great arm and in Fenway you also need a lot of range. Thankfully Victorino was made to play RF for Boston. In Center I want speed, good reads, and great range ... Ellsbury fits what you need at Fenway. Left Field ... you have to be able to catch a baseball and be a very good hitter. Learning how to play the wall in Boston is a plus. Filling right and left for Boston is the key. I am not sure that JBJ can hit as well as Ellsbury and he is pretty poor at SB which I find very interesting. You would think that someone like JBJ with above average speed would have been successfully stealing bases at every level that he has played. I would not take Choo over Ellsbury based on Bostons need. Having Drew, Pedroia and Ellsbury up the middle in 2013 has been very successful.
  15. Ellsbury has helped his case in the Divisional Series ... 1 down and 2 to go.
  16. Do you guys think that Choo is going to be significantly cheaper than Ellsbury? IMO If Ellsbury goes just have JBJ play center and have Gomes and Nava platoon in left. You cannot pay Choo money for Choo to platoon and Choo is below average against lefties. Gomes / Nava will deliver near the same numbers as Choo for what 7M. Choo puts up great numbers so he isn't going to come cheap.
  17. Choo has great numbers and fits perfectly with the Sox hitting philosophy but I would rather give the full time LF position to Nava / Gomes as they are a much more affordable way to fill that position. Choo is going to be expensive and will be signing for multiple years.

  19. This is the link: http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/red-sox/index/_/count/76 12 Notable Player Achievements by Gordon Edes * Ellsbury and right-fielder Shane Victorino both ranked in the Top 5 in Zone Runs, one of the top metrics for defensive players. Ellsbury led all outfielders with 23 Zone Runs, which is the number of runs above or below what an average player was worth, based on number of plays made. Victorino led all AL right-fielders with 15, and was fifth overall. I had not heard of this metric before but my eyes tell me that Ellsbury does track down a lot of balls in the gaps.
  20. I'll look for the fielding ranking ... I believe it was referenced on the Boston Red Sox ESPN site under 2013 achievements.
  21. Tampa seems to make the right deals most all of the time.
  22. I would like to see Sox / Cards in the WS since the Dodgers are going to be really good for a number of years.
  23. Look, No doubt that Victorino had a great year but I do not get your point. Victorino caught fire at the end of the season and he played solid defense throughout the year. I read a stat where Ellsbury was ranked as the top defensive outfielder in the game with Victorino ranked 5th. If the Sox can keep them both they should. We had two closers on the DL this season eating 11M of the 2013 payroll. There are people on this forum that think Ellsbury is worth 15m per year and that his legs are going to give out on him in 3 years time ... I am not buying this at all. Suppose they can get him at 18M and we are overpaying him by 3m per year ... big deal. Maybe we sign Abreu at 10M / 6 and he turns out to be worth 18M per year. Napoli is going to make 13M for 2013 and he is a FA after this season. Signing Ellsbury would be a no-brainer if not for Jackie Bradley Jr. waiting in the wings at $500K per.
