I was more upset with him for his 2nd injury when he was sliding into 2nd to break up a double play. I have issues with his judgement for the following reasons:
1. It was early in the season and a nothing game
2. The ball was hit sharply and the hitter was out by 3-4 steps.
3. Did I say that it happened early in the season and was a nothing game.
Playing alert and hard is one thing ... playing smart is another. Should a player run into an outfield wall to catch a ball early in the season ... I would rather the player play the ball off the wall and throw it into second or to the cut off man and play another day. In the post season all bet's are off but still you have to use good judgement ... if there are 2 outs and no runners on base and your team is ahead by 3 runs ... do not crash into the wall. If runners are on 2nd and 3rd in a tie ballgame with 2 outs go for the catch. does this make sense?
If Yankees sign Drew the Sox will have the 29th, 32nd, 33rd, 60th, 90th overall picks. The Yankees first pic will be in the 3rd round about 77th overall. 2013 will now be known as the Curse of the Ellsbury
Amended:
The Yankees signed Ellsbury and McCann and Beltran... meaning that the Yankees forfeit their 1st, 2nd and 3rd pics in 2014 draft. In the Compensation Round ... Atlanta (worse record than Boston) would pick ahead of Boston. St. Louis (worse record than Boston but better record than Atlanta) would also pick ahead of Boston. The Mets signed Granderson and the Mets had the 7th worse record so the Mets would forfeit their 2nd round pick in the 2014 draft. The Yankees would pick ahead of Atlanta, St. Louis and Boston based on their record. Seattle signs Cano and forfeits 2nd round pic in the 2014 draft.
Order of First Round Picks (only showing order of teams in my example)
Seattle
Mets
Yankees - Forfeit (Ellsbury)
Atlanta
St. Louis
Boston
Order of Compensation Picks (only showing order of teams in my example)
NYY - Cano - Forfeit (McCann)
NYY - Granderson - Forfeit (Beltran)
Atlanta - McCann
St. Louis - Beltran
Boston - Ellsbury
Boston - (Should another team sign Drew)
Order of 2nd Round Picks (only showing order of teams in my example)
Seattle - Forfeit (Cano)
Mets - Forfeit (Granderson)
Yankees -(Forfeit should they Sign Drew)
Atlanta
St. Louis
Boston
Should NYY sign Drew then Boston would get back to back picks in the Comp round and NYY would loose their 4th pick. Drew for a 4th pick makes sense for them. If the Mets sign Drew they will forfeit their 3rd round pick.
I said that I would not believe Cano signing with Seattle until the ink dried and someone through a glass of cold water in my face ... I'm still waiting for the later.
so basically MLB awards the comp picks to teams who had FA's with QO's but signed with a different team and then MLB take picks away from you based on the number of FA's with QO's that your team signed. The take aways begin in Round 1 unless your team had one of the 10 worse records in baseball the prior season ... if so they begin taking in the Comp round and not round 2.
Correct me if I am wrong:
1. There is one round of compensation picks between the 1st and 2nd round of the draft?
2. So far based on the signing of FA's who rejected the teams QO we have the following senario:
The Yankees signed Ellsbury and McCann and Beltran... meaning that the Yankees forfeit their 1st, 2nd and 3rd round pics in 2014 draft. In the Compensation Round ... Fred, are you upset that the NYY's are not telling you the truth. I do not even want Ben to speak the truth ... these are high stake card games and nobody is going to tell anybody what they have in their hand.
Palodios you make such good sense that I am going to draft you in the first round. Ortiz was and is great we all know this but he is signed through 2014 ... he will want to have another great year to keep playing and earning. We need not extend him. As you say we just offer him a QO at the end of the season or extend him out another year near the end of next season. Need to keep him in shape and not let him get fat and lazy. He was injured in 2012 ... not all that long ago. On the other hand you cannot fault Ortiz for trying.
I know it is all of baseball ... all of Minor League Baseball that is. Seriously, would you deal Allen Webster for WMB? We have 4 other prospects in the same class as Webster if you include Workman. How many hitters with 35 HR Ceilings do we have? When Ortiz retires not a one ... I think Nap's ceiling is around 30 now as you have to put your bat on the ball to hit it over the fence.
