  1. There's that trademark choke hitting from Cano. A guy gets on base and with the opportunity to put the Yankees up by two, he grounds in to a double play.
  2. I would call him a good hitter. I've looked at his statistics in high leverage situation and there is no consistent pattern year to year.
  3. Clutch doesn't exist in that it isn't a repeatable skill that people can be consistently good at. But choking in large situations does in fact exist. It's rare, but there are some players who are consistently bad in big situations. Since Cano's rookie year, he's been the second worst player in baseball when it comes to production in close and late games relative to production in neutral situations.
  4. The biggest thing that strikes me about Cano's value is how his production gets progressively worse the more important the situation. His production at home in front of larger crowds get worse, despite the fact that he plays in a very friendly stadium for lefthanders. His production with runners in scoring position get worse. His production in close and late games and the playoffs is downright terrible. He's the better hitter, but he puts up relatively empty statistics.
  5. Yeah, I'd agree. Pedroia's better at all of the little things that WAR doesn't take into account. Cano's a career .321 .361 .532 hitter with the bases empty and a .273 .332 .448 with runners in scoring position. WAR doesn't take that into account. Cano has a -5.81 Clutch rating, which takes into account how he performs in close and late games, Pedroia's a +0.81. WAR doesn't take that into account. Pedroia works pitchers an extra pitch an at bat. WAR doesn't take that into account. Pedroia also doesn't have issues hitting same-sided pitchers, like Cano does. The only things Cano does better are hitting for power, he has a stronger throwing arm, and he hits better on the road.
  6. A case could be made either way. Pedroia has the better numbers since he became a starting player, but since 2011 they're neck and neck in WAR.
  7. Are you talking defensively or overall?
  8. Good first inning for Clay. Doesn't make sense to give Cano anything to hit with the shitshow that is the rest of the Yankees offense.
  9. I don't think that last pitch to Cano was a strike. I'll look it up on pitch f/x after the game.
  10. He has some pretty good numbers against Buchholz.
  11. That's going to happen against Kuroda, he doesn't throw anything straight.
  12. It's not a matter of being sensitive, it's a matter of not being a terrible person. There's no reason to throw slurs around in a baseball forum.
  13. That's really unnecessary.
  14. Romine's going to hit a home run and make multiple errors now because... baseball.
  15. I knew there was an upside.
  16. Tarp off the field, 8:50 scheduled start time.
  17. If the Yankees lose, they'll be in third place.
  18. Chris Stewart scratched from the game. Romine will catch, he's a career .119/.148/.153 hitter in 42 plate appearances.
  19. Pedroia kills Kuroda. 7-for-15 with a double, a home run, a walk, no strikeouts and three stolen bases.
  20. Doesn't look like it will take long.
  21. Love the lefty-heavy lineup. Righthanded sinkerballers tend to struggle against lefties, and Kuroda's no exception.
  22. Yeah, as great as he's been, we still can't start Nava against lefthanders when we're healthy.
  23. The Yankees can't hit anyone. They just got shut down by the Mets. The only reason they scored on Lester is because he walked batters.
