I was not agreeing with him, but I do think that BA is one of the top ways to evaluate a player. IMO not the best. But he has presented his arguement. Its defensible. What in your opinion is the single best way to judge offensive contribution? Don't be wishy washy and tell me that we cannot isolate a single statistic. I KNOW that many stats exist. Pick one.

There is no *right answer* to this question. Using BA as the single most important gauge of offensive contribution is not a position held by a lot of people, but its certainly defensible. I like OPS because it measures not only how often a guy reaches base but also how much power a guy hits with. It takes into account the fact that a single is not as valuable as a triple.

Maybe Lester was just telling the truth. I respect the guy as the first player to come forward with the truth and an apology. As for Francona......................good luck Tito.

I was kidding about the keggers. I don't think a few beers after the game is going to do anyone any harm. And, in fact, if the chicken is fried in canola oil, its actually pretty healthy. Canola oil reduces the risk of heart attacks. IF they can handle the calories in it.

Yes, thats true about Conley and me...but we had an excuse. We were stoned at the time. Since then Conley has always said to the media that he tried marijuana once, but he didn't exhale. -

I think that ERA is the single best way to evaluate the performance of a pitcher. Others may disagree, but this is really basic: how many runs per nine innings did the pitcher surrender. The other metrics are needlessly complicated in this regard, IMO. The function of a pitcher is to prevent runs from scoring; that is 99.9% of his function. Other metrics can measure how he earned his ERA (WHIP is also valuable, as are metrics that tell you how far into games a pitcher got, thereby saving the pen), but the SINGLE best measure of a pitcher's worth-IMO-is ERA. Thats why I said that Lackey is THE worst SP in baseball.

I want to hear public apologies for the behavior, not excuses and explanations. I'm a pretty forgiving guy. If player after player acknowledged his role in what went on, admitted it was wrong, and promised the fans that it would never happen again, I would be fine with this. Then we can all put it to rest. So far we have heard a lot of excuses and explanations....and few apologies (Lester, to his credit, admitted that the beer drinking was "wrong").

Lets face it: these players were not hired for their brains; they were hired because they have great eye hand coordination or can throw a baseball past another player. When they start talking its evident that most of them should have considered completing second grade before playing MLB. Look at what Papelbon says sometimes...especially when he forgets to take his meds.

Look at this link. Its available at the ESPN MLB STAT site. It shows that of 145 major league starting pitchers with over 100 innings pitched this year, Lackey finished at #145. I guess this goes in this thread, the "This needs to be said" thread. Some of us have been of the opinion that Francona is a mediocre manager for many years, a terrible in game tactician and someone who coddled his players to the detriment of the team. Although he seemed good at managing some of the egos on the team, the new statements from John Lester today seem to validate our position: Francona allowed the guys to walk all over him. He was as soft as a marshmallow and it showed. I am glad that Lester told us the truth about how it was in the dugout. Well, the party is about over. The new manager is going to be much tougher. It will be interesting to see how some of the overpaid underperformers in this team react.

I agree with you. I am glad that those reponsible are finally talking, at least some of them. And I have no reason to doubt that what Lester said is the truth: that its a single ninth inning beer, that the chicken was once a month, and that Tito had no rules and that they pushed him. I will say this: I am not sure its wise to let Beckett and Lackey talk. Beckett is too damn stubborn and I fear that he will try to justify what happened even more than Lester did and inflame an already bad situation. And I don't really care what Lackey has to say. I just want him gone.

There can be no credit as of right now (I am sure that you mean "credit for any future success") for any of these prospects. They may or may not work out; the odds are against them, as they are for any prospect. None have seen a single pitch in the majors.

Rivers has Garnett on the team. No player would misbehave and risk getting KG in his face. Davis tried to misbehave and KG made him cry on the bench. We have no one like that on our team. We need one.
