Bard is going to be the closer, at least to start the year. Why pay big bucks for someone else? Bard has earned the chance for a shot at that job. Maybe it will work out; maybe not. I would rather spend the money getting other pieces for a run in a couple of years that for a closer who is likely no better than Bard would be. They are ALL a crapshoot, Rivera being the exception.

Whether or not he was worth the money is a totally subjective judgement. In his case there was both good and bad: good OPS, good defensively, but on the negative side, he never got over 78 RBIs in a season, didn't hit many HRs, was felt by most that he didn't fulfill his potential as a ball player, and was soft and unwilling to play injured. He got paid to play like a top corner OF and IMO failed to do so overall, though in some areas he excelled. As I said, I expected more.

Thats your opinion. For $15M per year I expected more. Remember: that amount began five years ago when it was a relatively larger amount.

With luck the FO will realize that this is not going to be anything but a bridge year. And thats fine with me. Its not going to happen overnight folks. There is just too much deadwood on this team for it to be competitive this year IMO. As for the chronic complaining: ignore it. Its ubiquitous. No one is going to change it.

Bard deserves a shot at closing IMO. He certainly has the stuff to do it with two excellent pitches, a FB and a slider. Others are fine too as long as the money and contract length are right

Bingo! Its time to start the rebuilding process, and you don't do that with long expensive contracts for relief pitchers. Papelbon would have been a good option for fewer years, but four years at $50M? Thats a mistake I am glad we didn't make. Time to give Bard a chance to prove what he can do.

Bard was overused last year. He faded in September because of that. From April 1 to Aug 31 he had an ERA of 2.03 with a BAA of .164 and an OPSa of .497. Superlative stats until he faded. For the same time period Papelbon had an ERA of 2.80, BAA of 202, and an OPSa of .537. Bard pitched in more games that Papelbon did and got burned out IMO. I think he will do just fine as long as Dave Martinez doesn't overuse him this year.....OOPS! We haven't hired Martinez YET.

Yeah, but they overpaid for it. The ONLY way this deal is worth it is if Papelbon keeps putting up Rivera-like numbers for four more years. So far Rivera has a career ERA/WHIP of 2.21/1.00, and Papelbon is similar at 2.33/1.02. Rivera is one of the very few consistently excellent relievers in the history of the game. Most peak and its followed by inconsistent performances. For that money I would not want to see the Red Sox sign him. Bard will do fine.

I don't really care if you think Fred is a "real fan" or not, but this kind of language is uncalled for on any civil board. If you want to post on public boards you should learn some common decency. Keep doing this and you will be reported to the mod here. Try disagreeing agreeably; it works a lot better than the kind of BS you have posted.

Sizemore has been a flop lately. He hit .224 with an OPS of .706 last year and was injured the year before that. We do not need another LHH OF. It would be a mistake to get him on board. Get Cuddyer instead.

I will also tell you that Fred is a passionate Red Sox fan. I know: I have met him and spoken to him many times by phone. It is YOU who looks like a fool if you continue to claim otherwise. Do you know Fred personally? If not, I think you ought to consider that many of us know him a hell of a lot better than you do.

No, there is no "one measure" that tells it all. Look at Drew and how he did with his OPS while he was here: pretty well, but not many people are satisfied with his overall performance here. Still, if there were a single best stat to look at the value of an offensive player, for me, its OPS, and for pitchers, its ERA. Those two stats might only tell half of the story for the player, so other statistics must also be considered. Some of the nonsense out there is just ludicrous: BABIP being one useless statistic that measures simple blind luck. Its amazing to me that some people want to make this relatively simple game something far more complicated than it really is.

No, Theo was not an idiot here; he did not suck in terms of overall performance. His area of success, or at least the area where his management team succeeded, was in developing young players like Pedroia, Lester, and Ellsbury, among others. However, his list of failures in the free agency arena reads like a bad novel. He gets an "F" in this area. Overall, I would grade him a "C". Not a total failure, but not someone I would want as GM for my ML team.

Drew never had more than 78 RBIs in a season. That is simply not good enough. Furthermore, while other guys gutted it out and played or at least tried to play hurt sometimes, Drew refused to do that. I remember one time when he had to be ordered to play by Francona because the team was short of OF (can't remember all the other details, but that stuck in my mind as an example of his softness). I will not miss JD Drew.

Hard to disagree with Elktonnic's theory that in a few years we should expect more compensation from the Cubs in an effort on their part to try to get us to take him back.
