I read that if Sabathia opts out (and why wouldn't he?), the Rangers are going after him. Hard not to admire what Ryan has done with that team. I was cheering for the Tigers because they eliminated the Yankees though

Wasn't he just drafted? I think he is more than a year or two away. Even after they are developed, the Sox don't immediately allow their young SP to pitch many innings. I remember that they have some sort of formula for how many innings a young pitcher can increase his workload by every year...its pretty slow. Three years seems more reasonable to me, if he makes it.

The medical staff has been HORRIBLE IMO. How can they not order an MRI on Buchholtz until AUGUST? His symptoms began in July. Because of that mistake, he missed an extra month of time on the field, possibly costing us the playoffs. In addition, one of the guys at Sawxheads last year looked up the reviews of the orthopedist one of our injured players was seeing, if you remember. I think it was Pedroia. The doctor got three stars our of five, as an average in his reviews. Seems that the Red Sox are rich enough to be able to afford the best doctors in town.

In baseball the team can prescribe a rehab program for a player and the team can hold the player to that prescribed program. Seems to me that this is the "out" Jung. If a player is so far out of shape that it affects their performance adversely (eg: Jenks and maybe Beckett), could the team not consider them "injured" and prescribe a conditioning/weight loss program to force them to be in some sort of basic physical condition?

I am a scuba divemaster and would love to dive out there. Anyway, back to baseball: here is a good link to look up baseball contracts by team: http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/2004/12/boston-red-sox.html Looks like Gio Gonzalez is signed for one year, but has less than a year and a half of ML service. I am not sure how many more years he would be either under team control or arbitration eligible. I will leave that to the stat people here.

Again, my area. I live out here, near the A's. The price for Gio would be very hefty. They love him, as well they should. Beane is no fool.

Perhaps "Legacy of mediocrity" would be more accurate. He certainly cannot claim success here, not with the contracts of Lackey and Crawford hanging on this team like albatrosses.

This will take some time to digest. Good effort on the analysis. For starters, why would the Rangers surrender Alexi Ogando, age 28 and making under $500K with a world of potential , for Josh Beckett, a troublemaker, making $17M per year through 2014? No way I make that trade if I am Nolan Ryan.

No one said its going to be easy. People are saying that its necessary. And it is. You really want the worst SP in baseball out there for us next season? Its going to be very difficult to get rid of him, but thats one of the first things that has to be done.

We sure needed one this year. Where was Varitek when all this nonsense was going on? Why wasn't OUR Captain in the faces of those goons who were downing frosties in the clubhouse when the ship was sinking? IMO the captain is the guy who will do just that: maintain some level of discipline amongst the players; someone who the guys respect and will listen to when he talks because he is known as a hard working successful veteran who has been in the organization for a while. While its not necessary to have a captain, I do think that its very useful. We had a captain this year; he just didn't do his job, the job he accepted when he agreed to wear the "C" on his jersey.

I wonder what goes on in the Yankee clubhouse. My guess is that its far more professional than ours is. As much as I hate the Yankees, I respect the way they conduct themselves, for the most part. Jeter exemplifies what it means to be "professional" at what he does (with rare exceptions); so does Mariano Rivera. I doubt Girardi would allow that kind of nonsense to go on in their clubhouse.

The medical staff also sent Pedey back out there before he was really ready last year, only to realize their mistake and sit him back down. I am glad it didn't get worse as a result of that error.

Sounds reasonable to me. Maybe a newcomers thread in the Off Topic area would be appropriate. Why limit ourselves to just former Sawxhead posters? This is not to exclude anyone, just to help find one another since that seems to be an issue. I am not sure of the rules here yet, but go ahead and do it. Good idea IMO. Brennan, I am embracing this change. I think that sometimes change is good, as you know from what I have posted over there.
