  1. Here is the complete list. Admittedly, not real impressive. That still doesn't mean that we aren't overpaying Beckett compared to guys like CJ Wilson and Jerrod Weaver. Starting Pitchers Brandon Backe HOU Josh Beckett * BOS Erik Bedard SEA ( Daniel Cabrera ARZ Bartolo Colon CWS Jose Contreras COL Doug Davis ARZ ( Justin Duchscherer OAK ( Adam Eaton COL Kelvim Escobar LAA Jon Garland LAD ( Tom Glavine ATL Mike Hampton HOU Rich Harden CHC ( Livan Hernandez WAS Tim Hudson * ATL Randy Johnson SF ( John Lackey LAA (A) Braden Looper * MIL ( Jason Marquis COL ( Kevin Millwood * TEX Brett Myers PHI Vicente Padilla * LAD ( Carl Pavano MIN ( Brad Penny SF Odalis Perez WAS Andy Pettitte NYY ( Joel Pineiro STL ( Sidney Ponson KC Jason Schmidt LAD John Smoltz STL Jarrod Washburn DET Todd Wellemeyer STL Randy Wolf (A)
  2. While I don't agree that its necessary to find better alternatives back then to have an opinion about Beckett's contract (I already mentioned a couple of guys that are at least as good or better than he is from an ERA standpoint that are getting less money or the same money but are superior to him), other alternatives BACK THEN that could have been considered more cost effective are Rich Harden and Eric Bedard. Yes, Harden flopped for a couple of years, but at the beginning of 2010 we didn't know that would happen. Nor could we have predicted Bedard's injury problems. Or Beckett's 2010 season when his ERA was 5.78. Thats just a couple of guys we could have signed that may have been alternatives to overpaying Beckett. Maybe we could have signed someone else who is better the next year with the savings.
  3. Beckett's contract is a bit top heavy with $$ IMO, but its far from the worst screw job Epstein perpetrated on the franchise. There are many many worse than Beckett's: Lackey, Crawford, Matsusaka, Jenks, Cameron....and on and on and on. Just because there were worse mistakes made does not make Beckett's contract a good one as compared to the contracts received by SP equal or superior to him. I mentioned a couple yesterday; there a lots more.
  4. Sorry, but that simply isn't true. Managers rarely defend crap perpetrated by the players, the one notable exception being Francona. Did Maddon defend Upton or did he bench his ass when he misbehaved for the Rays? Did Girardi defend or bench Posada when he told his boss that he didn't feel good about batting lower in the order? Happens all the time, players being called out publicly by their managers if they misbehave. Just not in Boston...until now.
  5. Look Papi, you are fooling no one. Everyone here knows that you are either Anthony Weiner or Jerry Sandusky. I bet if you ask politely Ms Michelle will accept a lovely note from you containing an anatomy lesson for her to study. I am sure that she is a "student of the game". I wish I could go to a mud wrestling match..............
  6. In that article Cafardo also said that the owners are trying very hard to stay BELOW the luxury tax limit so it can get reset for next year. So are the Yankees, according to him. I agree with him; that appears to be what is happening. And I also think its a good move.
  7. Thats a fair question, but it would require a lot of time to go back and look to see who was available back then. If I have time to do that research I will do it...but not now.
  8. Eventually it will. The players will realize that they need to be PROFESSIONAL at what they do or they will suffer the consequences. Their behavior will change so that they avoid the embarassment that prima donnas like Crawford are now enduring, and that Beckett endured before him. They will all fall in line, or they will not be playing for this team. It will take time-a year or two-but they will ALL fall in line.
  9. Bard will probably be in the rotation, and possibly Aceves, but if they don't work out as starters, we know they are reliable relievers. I expect Jenks to be a positive contributor. We are still probably going to try to trade for Bailey or sign Madson, that would only improve the pen, because Melancon would be able to be the set-up man. Miller, Albers, Bowden, Morales, Doubront, and Atchinson will also be fighting for spots in the pen. I do NOT expect us to get either Madson or Bailey. Too expensive. As for Jenks, the less said the better. He is an out of shape loser. Those other guys-Miller, Bowden, Doubront, Atchison, Albers....come on. Really? And thats just the pen, assuming our two best remaining relievers are in the rotation. There won't be a number of runs that will be enough next year.
  10. Great. Who closes then? Who else is in the pen? Who is the fourth starter? The needs for this team are great...nearly impossible to fill in one year.
  11. Not this year. I think they should save their money for a year that we have a need for just a bit more than they are willing to spend and then get us the piece that puts us over the top. There is no way for the owners to realistically afford two good SP, a closer, much of the pen, and a quality RHH OF all at once. Thats what we need. Its just too much for one year.
  12. Beckett's ERA with the Red Sox is over 4. That is not worthy of a $17M contract. He is not what I would call an "ace". He is a step below that. For comparison, CJ Wilson just signed a contract worth $15.4M per year, and his career ERA is 3.60. Jered Weaver is making the same money Beckett is making, but has an ERA of 3.31. Beckett just doesn't measure up. There are many many examples of guys making less than he is that are doing a good job more consistently that he is. I am not going to research all of them. Thats a bad contract IMO-another gift to the frachise by an incompetent GM.
  13. Yes, they CAN afford the extra costs. The owners are BILLIONAIRRES. But they are not going to do it. They will stick to their preconceived budget to the detriment of the team. That is the primary reason I think we are in a rebuilding year. If the owners were WILLING to open up their damn purses we could compete for a ring. Realistically, I don't see that happening.
  14. I would say that for what he is being paid his ERA should be less than 4, and he should come through when we need him. His ERA has been less than 4 for 3 of the past 5 years-and 3 of the past 6 years, in fact. Its been over 5 for 2 years. He is being paid $17M per year now. If he repeats his past performance (over the last 6 years, all of his time on the team), I don't think that he is being apppropriately paid.
  15. The fact that Wakefield cannot get anybody out any more is obvious to anyone who follows the team. However, he is cheap. And that fact will not escape the attention of the ownership IMO. I think that there is a significant chance they will sign him again even though he stinks. Again, if this is a rebuilding year you cannot rebuild everything all at once. You have to wait for some of the bad contracts Epstein hobbled us with to come off the books. Then you can buy some ML pitchers. Until then, its incompetent selfish boobs like Wakefield.
  16. On the other hand, I believe that the team will rehire Tim Wakefield after their "due diligence" at finding a cost effective (ie cheap) alternative. They are not going to pay anyone $12M per year when they can pay Wakefield what-$4M? Kuroda is not coming, at least not at his current asking price. Saunders is someone I do not want to EVER see on our roster. And Jurrgens isn't coming either-and I think thats a good thing since he will be too expensive and does not have good velocity (not a requirement, but it sure helps, especially at his age). That leaves the dregs, and the management will decide on Wakefield. After all, as fans don't we "deserve to see him go for the record"?
  17. Jason Varitek has had his last AB for the Boston Red Sox. They will not carry three catchers this year. So either he goes or Shoppach or Salty goes. Varitek should be hired as a coach for the catchers in the entire franchise. He has a lot to offer as a coach. As a player, his is finished.
  18. Generally Boras succeeds in getting his clients top dollar. I have no idea how he will do it with Madson, but in the end he will get a hefty deal. Damon was different: he was older and couldn't really play his position well any more. If Madson does fail to get a great deal it will be very very late in the offseason because Borass also engages in brinksmanship on a regular basis.
  19. Who is Madson's agent?
