  1. You bet they knew what they were getting. They knew it and they knew they NEEDED it. I agree with Lucchino. Valentine is the right guy for the job, at least for a couple of years.
  2. I am calling ******** too. How many playoff games have we won in the past three years? How are we doing with our pitching=how did we finish in ERA compared to the rest of the AL during the first three years? Its great that Epstein inherited a very good team and made it a little better, good enough to win in 2004. Wonderful. I will give him credit for 2007 for the most part. Now we see what has been eating at this team, probably for longer than just 2011 when it was discovered. Just listen to the language these freaks are using-Wakefield ("the fans deserve to see me go for the record"-imagine if a New England Patriot had said that!), Beckett, Crawford, and who else that we don't even know about. This crew needs to come into line or we will continue to have results like the last three years. Every sane person knows that they guys getting along and being professional is very important to success. You can have your opinion, which I disagree with, but dude, you cannot take mine away from me. ********. Ha.
  3. This rotation must be decided in spring training. Whoever is the most effective pitcher gets the ball on opening day. No more of the "good 'ol boy network" where past achievements are emphasized over current performance.
  4. Interesting tidbit: the Red Sox as we know had no problem scoring runs last year. We were ahead of the rest of the AL in runs and OPS, as the author of this thread has mentioned. On that team, who was the leading RF for us in terms of production as judged by OPS? Darnell McDonald. (Reddick was slightly better at .784, but he is no longer on the team-and after July 1 his OPS was just .714 compared to 1.198 before July 1) For RF with a minimum of 100 ABs, McDonald was 14th (of 21 RF who qualified) in the AL with an OPS of .704. Drew was 20th at .617. The point is that even with McDonald out there as our starting RF this team will score lots of runs. The problem was never with production; it was with preventing the other guys from scoring. We finished 9th in ERA in the AL. Until that gets fixed we will keep getting disappointed by this team. http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/batting/_/position/rf/league/al/sort/OPS/order/true/minpa/100
  5. In fairness to those on the other side Elk, here is what Valentine COULD have said in response to being asked if he and Crawford have talked: "I think that communication between players and their manager is of the utmost importance, especially if its a new manager just coming in. This is something we will be emphasizing as the season progresses. With good communication comes an exchange of ideas that should help us achieve better results on the field" And so forth. He could have dodged the question or answered a different question than the one that was asked. There were many other ways to handle this. Frankly, I like the way he chose to handle it: hang the malcontented self-centered insubordinate schmucks on the team out to dry. This is on Crawford now. Its going to be very very tough on him unless he capitulates and explains himself with a full apology to his new boss.
  6. For my part, I don't care WHO the manager is. Crawford owes it to his BOSS to return the phone call. Satan himself could be managing the Red Sox and you STILL return calls from your boss. Whether Valentine acted correctly in calling him out on it is a separate issue.
  7. Two good points SoxSport: Montero is really only a chip for the AL. He is not really considered good enough defensively to make the grade as a position player right now. And sure, Kalish, as good as he is, could be used as a chip because corner OF are more easily obtained and less valuable than proven good SP. If we could get Garza for a package centered around Kalish I would do that in a heartbeat (depending, of course, on the composition of the rest of the package).
  8. Yup. That was a BS move by our owner. It was worse than unprofessional; it was unnecessarily demeaning and insulting to a guy you are paying big bucks to play ball for you for seven more years. Henry made a mistake and my guess is that he would like a do-over for it. But you can't put the feathers back in the pillow...... That said, Crawford is WRONG to behave like a self-centered punk. The two issues are unrelated. I know you don't like Valentine and that your opinions are biased by that opinion, which is fine-but that does not excuse Crawford's behavior either.
  9. This thread should be removed.
  10. And its EXACTLY the kind of attitude that must be extinguished on this club
  11. Good trade. We had a surplus of LHH OF anyway. Kalish is probably ready to take over in RF if we cannot find a RHH OF to do it. The A's think that Alcantara has a big upside, so it could also work out well for them. They have a history of developing good pitching in their minor league system. Bailey is not FA eligible until 2015 according to what I read.
  12. Apparently the A's are very high on Alcantara. Beane is not one to get his team screwed by a trade.
  13. 1. Its common decency to return phone calls. 2. You have an ethical obligation to respond to your boss's contact attempts 3. If you choose to behave like an ass then you should expect to be treated like one. Do you really mean to tell me that if this were YOU and YOUR boss called you at home asking to speak with you that you would choose not to call back if you were pissed off at him? You do that and you get fired. Crawford cannot be fired, but he will wish he were fired if he keeps behaving like this. He will be skewered by the vicious Boston media and booed every time he walks on the field. Life will be hell for him in Boston for the next seven years. He will most likely ride the pine a lot under BV if he keeps up this assinine behavior. Which is worse, calling your boss back and being polite or enduring hell on earth in Boston in a job you hate for seven more years?
  14. You don't like Weaver in that group, fine. Lets look at Dan Haren. His career ERA is 3.59, better than Beckett's, and he WAS available by trade. And even Derek Lowe has a better career ERA and is earning less than Beckett (admittedly some of his time was in the NL). History is littered with guys who are better than Beckett and who earn the same or less. I can't look them all up, but in this link you can find some of them: http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/ As for the rest of your post, I agree: we cannot really be in the World Series every year. But come on: its been three years since we even won a single playoff game. With our payroll we should be doing better than that. This year will be yet another down year, most likely. I hold Epstein primarily responsible for the current state of affairs.
