Because if we are under the cap the owners are seriously considering staying there this year. Any FA signed next year would be taxed at, I believe, 140%. And there will be lots of good SP available. No, they are not ALL going to sign extensions with their clubs. This is what I would prefer. I think we would be shooting ourselves in the foot if we go for broke this year.
You need to develop a sense of humor. And I would also advise you to cease making this a grounds for cursing at other posters or otherwise attacking them, rather than attacking what they have written.
You have already agitated other posters here. I would not want to see you get banned for this activity. Just be civil.
However, if you feel that you can berate me because i take a more optimistic view of what the season will be the Red Sox, then expect me to promptly tell you to go f*** yourself
Children shouldn't use adult words.
I think that they will have a good season, if you are realistic about what constitutes a good season. For me, thats 90 wins. With this team, thats all I expect for wins. I also expect that it will be a "good season" if Valentine gets the clubhouse in order and if the team gets rid of those recalcitrant overpaid MEFIRSTS who now infest the team. Thats how I will measure success.
Winning a ring this year is close to being out of the question. But that doesn't mean we can't have a "good year".
I haven't changed my mind "Bellhorn"
This SHOULD be a rebuilding year. My comments were aimed at the folks here who actually believe that we have a decent shot at making a run at a ring this year. I think thats deluded thinking during a rebuilding year, but thats what these boards are for: different opinions. I believe that we ought to keep below the tax limit and not waste a single prospect this year.
I think that Justin Germano fits right in. He sucks. But so does Bowden, Doubront, Lackey, Matsusaka, Silva, Carlson, and Cook. On the other hand, so does Jenks, Atchison, and Albers.
Germano has found a home.
One more thing: when we are in a battle for third place in August, I don't want to read more nonsense from you about how all those injuries are responsible. There WILL be injuries; count on it. Using them as an excuse (again) is a copout (again).
Best team in baseball "at one point" is meaningless. Our team didn't even make the playoffs. We were the third best team in the AL East. And this year we will have competition for that honor from the Blue Jays. Our pitching SUCKS, and no, we are not getting a quality starter to fill in at the #4 position. There is no money for that. Instead, Cherington is flinging loser bums at the wall to see if any of them stick. Remember the year we signed Penny and Smoltz? Well, its that year again.
You guys do realize that the odds of ANY team finding two SP like Colon and Garcia again are pretty small. Finding one of them would be unexpected. When was the last time that happened, when a team found two end of the rotation SP who actually contributed for most of the season like Colon and Garcia did? I can't remember it ever happening at that level.
Sure we need "depth" in SP. It should be a clue to everyone here how the FO regards our chances for a ring (no matter what kind of propaganda they perpetrate) when they hire bums like Miller, Silva, and Cook. Those are just warm bodies to throw at other teams; canon fodder. BTW: who was our #5 SP again?
This is from the other board I post on:
The Red Sox were gauging trade interest in some of their out-of-options pitchers at the GM Meetings this week, a source tells Alex Speier of WEEI.com. Franklin Morales, Andrew Miller, Felix Doubront, Michael Bowden and Scott Atchison are all out of options but aren't locks to make next year's bullpen, according to Speier, so Boston may decide to add or remove some of these players from the 40-man roster based on relative trade interest.
And BTW: I can think of a better place to stash away "pitchers" like Silva and Cook. In fact, I just flushed it.
Let me help then: Bowden stinks. Bowden will always stink. He will never be a ML caliber pitcher. Good thing he has no options left so we can be rid of him once and for all this year.
