  2. Lets all hope that Morosi is wrong. A long term contract with CJ Wilson is exactly what we do not need. We already have Lackey and Matsusaka in that category. I do not trust Wilson, especially in the ALE.
  3. But we were mediocre, at least by the standards set by Red Sox fans, however unrealistic those standards are. Sox fans expect a competitive team every year, and over the last three years, that just hasn't worked out. You can lead the league in offense, but if the pitching is 8th in the AL you are generally doomed.
  4. I don't trust Oswalt or Kuroda (injury standpoint), and I don't see them spending the money to get Buehrle or Jackson PLUS Cuddyer unless they are willing to go significantly over the luxury tax threshold. Bullpen arms are a crapshoot, and if Aceves starts, we lose one of our best BP arms. That must be replaced with someone else who is good. Right now we have Bard and Aceves and, I believe, Morales who is doing well this winter playing in South America. Wheeler was offered arbitration and I haven't heard if he has accepted. He would be a plus IMO. So we would need three or four more. We will also be hobbled by the presence of Jenks, who will take up a valuable spot. You want to fill it out with Atchison or Albers? Not me. Hey, its possible, but its going to be a lot of work and it will take a lot of luck.
  5. Sure, if we can get TWO good SP (we have only Beckett, Lester, and CB as decent quality SP right now and we really need about 7-8 of them going into the season), a RHH OF, and a re-do of the bullpen-including a great closer- we could make a run. That is a very very tall order. I don't think we can accomplish that all in one offseason. Furthermore, the clubhouse attitude has to change. Thats just a lot of work. Don't get me wrong. I hope I am wrong. But right now this team is a mess (created by Epstein and Francona).
  6. I suggest you PM Seabeach Fred. He has been to a whole lot of games there and would give you an honest assessment of what its like. I found it just fine...and the weather is great during the whole season.
  7. He isn't going to throw another pitch for this team. He will be traded for some midlevel prospect by the deadline.
  8. Its all going to be how he handles adversity, which in Boston is defined by a three game losing streak. IMO his hiring is 75% for the purpose of cleaning up the clubhouse to maximize the chances of success in a couple of years. Making the playoffs this year is a bonus, and winning a ring is just something I cannot see happening with this group of players. Two years; maybe three.
  9. You guys are not in the minority. I think most people think Valentine was the best candidate available and now that he is hired, most would approve of him. Of course, that only will last until his first screwup. Boston is a tough town to work in.
  10. I have been there a couple of times. Seabeachfred has been there probably 100 times, I would guess. He lives in SoCal and I used to live there. Pretty good place to watch a game, though I don't much care for the city of Anaheim-too much concrete, smog, cars etc. I don't think you will be disappointed by catching a game there.
  11. I heard he will be the new baserunning coach.
  12. Bobby Valentine: "in the end, this is not a democracy" Gotta love the guy.

  14. I think that the difference is in how strong he comes across. As an analyst his job is to create interest and to an extent, controversy to keep people interested. He can comment much more strongly about Crawford's stance as an analyst. People love controversy; the watch controversial figures more than dull vanilla ones. As a manager his approach has to be a lot softer. All of it would have to be done behind the scenes, man to man with Crawford and the coaches. He has to get Crawford to buy into the change as manager, something that is irrelevant as analyst. I don't think (ie IMO) there is much you can take home from his stint as analyst that will translate to his function as manager. Thats all I am saying.
  15. Go ahead: admit it. You are actually a bit curious and very much looking forward to seeing what he can do with this team.
  16. IMO thats exactly the right length of time..just perfect. I never claimed that Bobby V is a long term solution for us. He is much too abrasive for that, unless he has mellowed out significantly over the years he has spent out of managing. In three years (or two) his job as sheriff will have been completed, the clubhouse mentality will have done an about face, and we will be ready for a more lenient manager (not nearly as gelatinous as Francona) to lead us to a championship. Kudos to the FO! They get an "A-" so far this offseason in my book. Only Cherington was dubious.
  17. I would be shocked if Bard were not given the opportunity to close.
