  1. Sharp as a tack, as usual.
  2. But Theo did f*** up this team-royally. It will take years for us to undo the damage he brought upon the franchise. Look around-Lackey, Crawford, Jenks, the medical staff that misdiagnosed Ellsbury and failed to diagnose Crawford..and so forth. It was his JOB not to make those mistakes, not our. We are fans; we can be wrong. He can't.....but he was. He did an aweful job as GM here, yet there are those who still think he walks on water. Hard to understand.
  3. You know what? I would have that MRI machine working 24/7 this year. Its not like an XRay which has potential side effects (there is no safe dose of radiation). An MRI is based on the magnetic properties of atoms and unless you are made of metal, its a very very safe procedure. I have a suspicion that this Crawford thing is going to drag on much longer than they are letting on.
  4. Damn...missed out on Saunders. One more bum Cherington failed to sign.
  5. No, they don't. This is a rebuilding year and the main focus should be to stay under the cap and rebuild. That has to be the strategy IMO. The final record this year does not matter one bit to me as long as they remain under the cap and fix the clubhouse. Thats enough to do for one season.
  6. And McDonald and Aviles.
  7. GMs are expert at getting creative as regards getting under the cap. I suspect that since it really makes no sense to go just a little over the cap this year with a bunch of Sox fans growling at the team already, unless the owners are more foolish then I suspect, they will either sign Oswalt and exceed the cap greatly or stay under it. Anything else is just plain stupid. Thats what you are saying, and I agree.
  8. Here is what the intro to the article says. It says we are NEARING the cap, not over it already: As mentioned in this column, the Red Sox may have only limited financial room to maneuver as they go about addressing their needs this offseason. While the team needs to identify two starters to round out the rotation and must decide what kind of additions to make to its bullpen (a matter that could become pressing if, for instance, Daniel Bard was to move to the rotation), the team is already starting to near the luxury tax threshold of $178 million for 2012.
  9. Reddick is gone; Bowden should be gone too. Salty is counted for $2M already. I think they are very close. My guess is that they are under, barely. Otherwise what the owners are doing makes no sense.
  10. Reddick is listed; also, those guys who have options can be sent down. Does their salary then count if they never get to the ML? Furthermore, some of those guys who are out of options, like Bowden, could be released.
  11. Its 129.4+30.4+1.3+12.7. Thats 174.1. What am I missing?
  12. I added it up to about $174.1M. Is that what you get?
  13. Couple more articles: http://fullcount.weei.com/sports/boston/baseball/red-sox/tag/luxury-tax/ And THIS, which seems to support Bellhorn's figures, or exceed them slightly: http://fullcount.weei.com/sports/boston/baseball/red-sox/2011/12/05/a-look-at-the-red-sox-payroll-for-2012/
  14. Its hard to find the value of benefits for the Red Sox. I found this, which just says that contracts + benefits are counted: The Yankees pay at a 40 percent rate on the amount of their payroll over $178 million, a figure that includes the average annual values of contracts plus benefits Bellhorn: where did you come up with the $10M figure? That seems high to me.
  15. Thats what it seems like, that they are under the cap, barely, and are working to keep under the cap. I admit that there are probably intricacies that none of us are aware of. Staying under the cap makes sense; its a sound business strategy, though it won't make any fans happy. It makes no sense whatsoever to go over the cap slightly since any excess salary over the cap triggers a 40% premium on the tax next year. I hope they know what they are doing.
  16. While none of us know for sure where the team stands with regard to the cap, I sure hope our FO knows exactly where we stand. Thats part of their job. I am willing to go with what we have right now ONLY IF we are under the cap and don't go over it. I definitely do not want to read later on that we were just a couple of million over the cap (and hence would be paying a 40% LT surcharge next year) and that the owners were just too cheap to sign someone to give a better shot at a ring this year.
  17. I would not be disappointed if we signed no one else this offseason if we were able to stay under the cap. I think that is the best long term business strategy for the franchise. Its going to make winning a ring this year, as some have put it, extremely difficult, but I am willing to wait until this franchise has its s*** in order before they get the pitching they need to form a dominant team.
  18. I believe he said that he couldn't imagine either of them "competing for a job in ST". Thats different. If one or both of them is HANDED a job prior to ST, then does that constitute "competing for a job"?
  19. Thats right. Damn that Cherington. He missed out on another piece of garbage. He is slipping. I thought he would sign them all.
