    It was timed so that another player would not have to be released or demoted AND it solved the Hanley problem. The timing was a necessity.

    LOL.....the truth is that I was kidding when I wrote it. Now that its happened I do see the logic behind it and I support the decision totally.

    Cora suggested the move to DD because, in part, he didn't think Hanley would take well to sitting on the bench.

    Actually Kimmi, I saw it. See last night's game thread, page 5 at the top. Someone asked who is getting moved when Pedey is activated and my response was one word: Hanley.

    They had to get rid of someone, and in terms of value, Ramirez was the logical choice. Sure Swihart isn't hitting as well as Hanley, but he is being paid a fraction of Hanley's salary. So someone had to go...thats why I called this move during last night's game thread, page 5. It was too logical not to see. Moreland isn't going to keep up the pace he is hitting at now, but he is MUCH better defensively, and won't sink to Bradley-esk numbers either. Furthermore, now Swihart will get a chance to show what he has more often, if anything.

    I suspect we have. Hanley isn't going to get 497 PAs with the Sox this season. End of discussion.

    Exactly. The Sox will be on the hook for the remainder of his 2018 salary less the prorated portion of the MLB minimum salary. In 2019 he can see what he can do about finding another $22M contract. Its hard not to feel sorry for the guy; I mean, how could he possibly survive on a measly $22M this year?

    Once he is released he is free to sign a totally new contract with another team. The current Sox contract option is null and void since he will not be getting the necessary PAs with the team.

    Read this: "As with any player who has been designated for assignment, the Red Sox will have a week to trade Ramirez, place him on outright waivers or release him. Given the remaining $15.17MM on this year’s $22MM salary and that easily attainable vesting option, it’s all but certain that Ramirez will be released rather than sent elsewhere. At that point, he’d be free to sign a new contract with a new club that would only owe him the pro-rated league minimum and wouldn’t need to worry about the vesting provision in his prior agreement in Boston."

    Thanks. This is a great move. Ramirez is washed up and would have costed the team 22M next year. Glad to see him go.

    There is no cogent reason why Ramirez should ever be in the lineup v RHP. In fact, if I were DD I would be letting Cora know that Hanley should sit a lot more so that 497 becomes unattainable.
