    Interesting theory, but I don't think anyone really knows what causes back pain (spasms). It is probably multifactorial. Regardless, I think JD has back spasms like Pom has biceps tendonitis.

    Right......not buying it. We aren't entitled to the truth about Pedroia's condition, and we haven't been given the truth. Someone has arthritis in his knee and had surgery on it....and the pain isn't related to the surgery? Sure.

    I think Pomeranz will end up in the bullpen. I would probably give him one, maybe two, more starts before demoting him, just to be sure. He isn't doing himself any favors in terms of his free agency with his performance this year.

    Exactly. Yes, DD has pretty much leveled our farm system, but on the other hand this team is on a pace to win 112 games. While we aren't likely to win that many games, by any estimation we seem to be a very good position to go deep in the playoffs. Hard to argue with the results so far.

    Props to Wright for a great game and, so far, a great season to date. That said, I do not trust knuckleballers...it seems that when they fall apart and lose control of where there pitches are going its much worse than with traditional pitchers. He had a great first half of last year, but even before his injury he was falling apart, as I recall. I will take whatever he can give us....but I am not expecting anything like consistency from him.

    Yes, but if he wears a hat it won't show I would rather get my bad news from the Red Sox medical staff, as bad as it is.

    There was little room for him anywhere with Ramirez here. I don't think its so much that they "see the value" in him so much as wanting to see what he has...giving him a chance to show management if he is worth keeping. His trade demand probably had something to do with it as well. I have been advocating for him to be given a chance for a long time. If he fails at least we know that he is not worth keeping; if he succeeds then he becomes another cog in the Sox wheel.

    Mike Olt has a career ML OPS of .580 and managed a -0.7 dWAR in 130 games or so in the majors. He is definitely not the answer at 3B.

    Essentially what the procedure involves is poking holes in the bones of the joint to induce bleeding. The resulting scar is loosely called cartilage, but its a very poor form of cartilage. The original cartilage is called articular cartilage and its fibers are much more closely knit than the cartilage formed in microfracture surgery which is called fibrocartilage. Ideally the holes in the bone induce blood carrying stem cells from the marrow so that new articular cartilage is formed, but this almost never happens completely. So eventually that cartilage wears down and again its bone on bone arthritis. Sometimes it works for a few years; sometimes it doesn't work at all. It almost never results in a satisfactory long term result, even for people who are not professional athletes.

    Thats one way to look at it, isn't it. That Devers is slumping is something we can all agree on. On the other hand, the Red Sox have done pretty well with a slumping Devers and have been in first place most of the year despite that fact. How many games ahead of the Yankees will we be once he snaps out of it? Thats another way to look at it.

    The last strike to Devers was 96+ on the upper outside corner. NO ONE hits that. I don't like his approach, but I can't blame him there. Lets be fair about it.

    I don't think Holt can keep this up, even with the muscle he added during the offseason. Besides, Pedroia is much better defensively. Unfortunately, I have my doubts about his ability to play regularly.
