    The pen was less "overused" than the Yankee pen or the Rays pen and only slightly more "overused" than the A's pen. Its just that our pen stunk relative to the playoff contenders. Its very simply a performance issue.

    I agree. Sale, Price, and Porcello all had bad years, but there is still plenty left in their tanks. They will probably all have bounceback years. All of them were well off their career norms in ERA: Sale: 4.68/3.04; Price: 3.86/3.28; Porcello: 5.74/4.35. While I do not expect all of them to reach their career norms I think they will do better than this year. Add to that a hopefully healthy Eovaldi and the ERod of 2019 and I think we can reasonably expect a much better year from our starters in 2020. The offense isn't going to be a problem. I can see DD constructing a bullpen that is much better by possibly trading away some of the offensive pieces we have. We probably have one more year before a rebuild is necessary. As for the GM and Cora: I give them one more year. If the Sox fail to make the playoffs in 2020 I would fire both of them.

    Its probably more productive right now to focus on what the team can do to become relevant again next year. While the pitching has sucked all year I think that our SPs still have something in the tank for next year. Sale, Price, and Porcello have all underachieved this year. I can see a modest comeback year next year. I do not think that they will be the dominant forces they were in 2018, but they will probably be better in 2020. I think that the focus has to be on building a top notch bullpen, even if we have to trade away some of our offensive chips. Our bullpen this year was simply horrible. And I am tired of hearing that its because the SPs didn't go deep enough into games. The fact of the matter is that the Rays and the Yankee RPs have worked more innings than our RPs, and the A's RPs only worked 27 fewer innings. Its not because our pen was overworked relative to the playoff contenders: its because they simply sucked. And that must change.

    Again the Sox fail to advance the runner on second to third with nobody out. Poor fundamental baseball.

    These guys are just pathetic. Runners on second and third with nobody out and we aren't scoring. Unbelievable. Just a really crappy team.

    This one is just about over. We do not come back from deficits.

    I would not trade him. He ranks 10th in OPS in the AL of catchers with a minimum of 150 ABs. Not bad. Not great either.

    Vasquez: .255/.675 for his career. He is not a great hitter.

    Sale didn't pitch well but he deserved better. Sale is getting exactly what he deserved-except that if I were Cora I would have left him out there until his arm falls off. He needs to be embarrassed.

    Pretty funny. These guys are jokes. We will get swept in NY and will be down 6 games at least for the last WC slot.

    This season slipped away a long time ago.

    Six walks. He has settled down, but all the runs count. Not a good performance.

    Since July 12 he is hitting .197/.597 in almost 70 PAs. He just had a hot streak, but he really isn't a great hitter.

    This team has given up...no life at all. Must be very demoralizing when you get ahead or score 6 -7 runs in a game but your pitchers surrender 8-9.

    Lets not kid ourselves about ERod....he might be the best we have but he is hardly "good". His ERA coming in is 4.13 with a WHIP of nearly 1.3. He has a lot of wins because the team tends to score runs for him.

    Cora isn't getting a pass from me, not with the way he failed to get his SP ready for the beginning of the season. Started off seven games under .500. Sure could use those seven games now.

    I don't mind if we suck for a year or two. Not at all. Its coming. There are no more dynasties in baseball. All I would like to see is an honest effort out there, and too often this season I am not seeing it. Two examples from last night's game: Devers failed to attempt to catch a playable foul ball (he gave up on it) and one of the Rays hits traveled about 15 feet down the first base line because our pitcher and our catcher didn't properly communicate as to who was taking the ground ball. Numerous other examples of playing brain dead baseball and brain dead managing this year exist. THAT is what I find inexcusable about this season.

    It will likely come down to the last week with the Rays and A's vying for the berth. We will be at least five games out by the end of the Yankees series, more than likely. I am sure the Yankees would just love to drive the final nail into our coffins like we did to them last August when we swept the four game series at Fenway from them. Sure was fun, last year. This year....not so much.
