    Its been awhile since the baseball season has ended so early. Its hard to believe that in August of 2011 the Sox were one of the better teams in baseball. Thats a long fall in a short period of time. When you see some of the good teams play now it makes you wonder how long is it going to take to rebuild this thing. The Sox are a big part of summers, but not versions like the 2012 Sox.

    We are losing now with Aviles at SS and he is not the future, we might well see if Iglesias has anything at all. Playing him one game and sitting him the next is not doing anyone any good. Need to continue evaluating for 2013 because 2012 was done weeks ago. When do pitchers and catchers report?

    Good lefty starters are hard to come by. Both Morales (Now on DL) and Doubrount have hit the wall. The way they baby these pitchers in the minors it takes them 3 or 4 seasons in the majors to where they get to 200 innings in a season. Doubrount also had injuries when in the minors which adds to his slow development toward 200 innings. Based on the out look for next season I think both are in rotation.

    Doubrount is spent, he has reached his innings and is just not effective anymore. Shut him down. I love Sctty Pods and what he has given us this year with the injuries, but with him in the 3 hole this lineup looks like a AAA lineup. I think Aceves is done in Boston. Most people didn't think anything of it when he had his blow up with BV, but now a blow up with a teammate. Is this him being bigger then the team, or AA being AA. When do pitchers and catchers report.

    You never know with prospects what the final product is going to be. Unfortunately, three holes that the Sox have right now (1B, LF, and a starting P) could have been filled by these three prospects that got traded away. Rizzo, Reddick, and Kelly all would look good now in Sox uniforms. At the time though most people wanted A-Gon and Bailey and were happy to get them.

    If the Sox get Bard back to where he was the beginning of last year then Melancon is a chip to trade. He has success in the NL and is not making big $$$$$. He might be able to bring back a useful every day player or a every day prospect that is a 1B or OF.

    I think Mauer is a great hitter, but is he worth the contract that he has? It runs to 2018 and pays him big $$$$$$$. He is 29 and catching right now is still his main position. I think the Red Sox are going to target players on small market teams that are looking to make their first big $$$$$$ (6 - 12 mil range). I don't know any by name, but it gives the Sox younger players that fit into a large market team payroll and don't tie their hands on other player moves.

    The 11 million is spread out over a number of years and I think averages about 2 mil a season. If the money saved because of the trade is invested wisely I will be happy if only one of the prospects becomes a key piece of the rebuild. Everything I read about Webster is that his stuff is for real. De LaRosa is probably the wild card. If he is healthy he has a lively arm. Power arms are always a plus in my book. It like speed with an every day player, you can't teach someone to throw 96-98 mph.

    CC was a hard worker, but he was never going to produce where people would say he is earning his money. Hamilton has a lot of baggage and is north of 30. Don't know if it is something that would be wise for the Sox to invest in. He is going to ask for big $$$$$$ at a minimum of 5 years.

    Bard has to prove he can handle major league activity again. If he can get back to where he was at the beginning of last year then he will be able to help the Sox at the end of the game. Until he does that I don't think you put him in any talk about the Sox 2013 closer job. As of right now on a depth chart Bailey still belongs there as closer.

    I guess it doesn't matter anyway because the Sox didn't put a claim on him. The Sox were big on Mauer before the big contract, but with it running to 2018 at big $$$$$ and him not getting any younger BC passed on him.

    Kendrys Morales is an interesting player. He seems to be an extra piece for the Angels. With the young guys they have now he might not fit in there and this might be the type of player the Sox could get.

    Iglesias having a good September is good for the Sox no matter what plans they have for him. He hits well and gains some confidence for 2013. It will make SS not look like a major whole in the off season. He hits well and they decide to go another direction then he is a bigger chip. If he hits .150 and plays a lot down the stretch who in the nation is going to live with that in 2013. He is going to get tested to because I believe 23 of the final 32 games are against teams still in the playoff hunt. That means he is going to see some good pitching. If he plays the steller D I can live with .250.

    Managing in today's era is tough because you got guys with 6 and 7 year contracts and making a lot of $$$$$$$ who are doing their own thing, and not the team thing. An on top of that you have the FO telling managers in some cases who to play and who is done at 160 innings on the season. Boston is a tough town to manage in before you factored all that in.

    The only way Twins trade Mauer is if they get someone to take the whole contract like the Sox got the Dodgers to take $$$$$ in the trade. Mauer is 29 and his contract runs through 2018. He will be 35 by the end of the contract. If you want to keep his bat in the lineup you would have to move him to 1B. He has already started to break down from catching and has been on DL several times the last couple of seasons. Granted he can hit, and would hit in Fenway. If your fine with him at first then he might be of value a few years of his contract.

    The questions about Crawfords contract by the media and fans started after seven ABs when he was moved out of the second slot in the lineup. He tried to prove he was worth the contract the whole year, and struggled the whole year and heard some boos. Based on Hamilton's past I could see similar things happening. He has had periods where he has struggled and if he is making big $$$$$ long term he is going to hear the fans and the media.

    Managers that talk too much to try to get some of the media focus on them can be a positive thing. Its when they are throwing their players under the bus where you have problems.

    If Gomez is your starting 1B in April then it will be a loooooooooooooooooong season. What offense you get from him he will give back up in the field. I think J Upton has a no trade clause in his contract and the Red Sox are one of the teams he can nix a trade to. Good young player (the kind they should be looking for), but he would have to be talked into coming here. Some guys know that they just don't want to play under the microscope of Boston.

    Good point on the stretch in Texas where he was in a slump. The media and fans wouldn't treat that to kindly if he making big $$$$$$. Think of what Crawford went through last year. Big things are expected out of big contracts in Boston.

    The starters were so inconsistent the first half that the bullpen pitched a sh _ _ load of innings which is now catching up with them. Most good teams have one or two guys that give them a ton of quailty starts that save the bullpen.

    I know Hamilton wouldn't take it, but if he would, would you do a 2 year deal at between 20-25 million per season? The problem with these 20+ million contract is that they are 6 and 7 years long. Those our problems waiting to happen.

    Mauer's contract run until 2018 at major $$$$$$ so I take a pass on this. He has been injuried off and on the last couple of years. He doesn't have much left in the catcher tank. This would be another contract that could go badly quickly. He is 29 and not getting any younger.

    If you look at everything that has happened the last few weeks it looks like they will bring back BV for year two. If you weren't going to do that why not replace him now and allow the new guy to look at some of the players now with 2013 in mind. If you are using the rest of 2012 as a try out for 2013 for some of the kids wouldn't it make sence that your planned 2013 manager be doing the observing. Stewart pitching tonight and probably a lot of young players playing the rest of 2012.

    If the Sox are attempting to reset this thing then Aceves suspension had to happen. If the rules don't apply to everyone from your stars to number 25 on the roster you are asking for problems. The whole Manny saga should have shown us that. When it did blow up it wasn't pretty. From what I read BV had a short bullpen last night and used Aceves for the two innings. Aceves hasn't had it lately and BV has to make the switch to Bailey. Bailey still has to prove he can close in Boston.
