  1. I think that it is nice that we do see from time to time some players choosing to take a little less contract wise to stay put so to speak. I like seeing it but I still stop short of putting the proverbial halo around their heads. They all are being given "big money". If you sign a contract that guarantees you anything north of 10 million dollars and you don't think that this is enough to sustain you and yours for generations to come, there really is something wrong with you. Of course we as well as they want as much as we can get, but at what point is enough actually enough? I surely don't know how it all plays out but it sure looks to me that the people in the best positions to profit during these times are the owners. Current restrictive spending rules as well as a greater use of statistical data discouraging the signing of players over the age of 30 to anything resembling long term, seems to me to play right into the hands of the people who sign the big checks.
  2. I hope that no one denies this point notin. But it then becomes very important to have an excellent bullpen. If we just call all of these guys relief pitchers, it still doesn't address the impact of what losing a relief pitcher like Kimbrel might do to that bullpen.
  3. I hear your frustration here and I agree with you for the most part. I do think that the role of "closer" though has become over rated. The way I look at it is without a kimbrel on our staff, you have hurt our bullpen dramatically. I absolutely do not subscribe to the theory that if Kimbrel was not out there and not adequately replaced by someone of about the same ability (if that is possible) that we would have still won a world series title. I don't really even like to look at things this way though because it is second guessing in hindsight which I think is ridiculous. Every player on that roster had a role to play - some greater than others. If you take just one of those guys out of that lineup, we never have gotten to where we got.
  4. few weeks and you'll be back to normal - look at it this way now you have the time to post more frequently here on tsox! lol good for you for saving the procedure for the off-season.
  5. I'm still thinking that Kimbrel is coming back home.
  6. You might be right about Familia - almost seems as though the Sox have a no ass hole and potential a - hole approach to players coming in.
  7. Louie A. and Nellie F. - two of my all time favorite players growing up.
  8. ok - here goes - my bet is that Kimbrel comes back to Boston.
  9. It is going to be very interesting to see if the Yankees will sign Machado. Obviously they might not now.
  10. Seriously! Who really feels this way? You of course are taking shots at Dombrowski and who really gives a s***? I say - great job done by all. Whoopie doo. Theo did a wonderful job - Ben was Ben- DD has the job.
  11. You are not wrong at all- you are absolutely right. We have a very small contingent pf posters here who I think believe that positive support of DD can be seen as a direct criticism of Cherington. How many times do we hear - DD has done a good job but but but. It is ridiculous but that is the way it seems to be. I also do not believe for one single second that talented players signed like Craig kimbrel are signed simply to appease fan interest. I'm pretty sure that they are signed for their talent and that usually is enough to appease the masses. Criiticizing the moves made by any GM of course is ok and is expected. I'm a DD supporter but I have really no problem with anyone who sees things differently than I do and subsequently chooses to criticize the man. It does get tiresome having to hear how Cherington would have done things differently. I look forward!
  12. I think that this is very true. The best Red Sox team of all time with respect to every aspect that makes a team great.
  13. Happy New Year!
  14. stop the presses!!! If I had known you were going to respond thusly, Workman might have looked a lot better to me all of a sudden. lol You know I am good for you.
  15. We might have won I guess without any number of players that we have. We have and had them though. This is an interesting direction that the thread is heading in. We normally talk about these types of things after we have lost not won. I'm fine thinking that there is no way we could have won without Kimbrel. If we had not won, we all would have been wondering if we could have if we had had him.
  16. I really really doubt this one.
  17. I do not think that Workman is going to be with us. Johnson still has value as a back of the rotation starter. Hembree is a guy if used correctly could help any team in the role he plays.
  18. Nothing wrong with Hembree at all. Cora knows how to use him best to maximize what he can give us.
  19. this makes me chuckle - correct too. If DD read and actually bought into much of the stuff posted here, he would quit.
  20. In all honesty as much as I love seeing him in a Red Sox uniform, Mookie Betts is replaceable. Likely not with someone as capable as he is but someone not so bad that it would limit the team that much. If prevailing wisdom is that we are going to be so poor in the next few years, that we won't be able to compete, what sense would it make to even consider a long term signing? None - with that thought in mind, he should be traded for a windfall of potential talent.
  21. Once again a good move I think. Carson Smith likely will be very motivated to resurrect his career. I bet he has a real sit down meeting with Alex Cora though before he steps on to the big field for the Sox. He didn't leave in a very good light.
  22. I'm pretty much one of those fans I guess. Falling off a cliff to me, implies something somewhat catastrophic. I doubt seriously that that happens. I seriously am wondering if the people who have been promoting the cliff concept will be upset if it doesn't actually occur simply because they were not proven right. For most people it is a gross misuse of a term unless you truly believe that we will be entering a season with virtually no chance of success. I'm not one of the "bright" people who claim to sort of know what JH must have said to DD about budgeting so I will just continue muddling along in my space and believe that as long as Henry owns the franchise we will be competitive and I will have a team worth watching as we move along. Oh well - sometimes ignorance is bliss - right?
  23. pretty much what I said notin. I'm sure the GM did what he thought was the right thing to do.
  24. I think that this actually says more about the people doing the projecting and the data they used than it does about Ben Cherington. People can use all of the data in the world to attempt to make a point but the games still are played on the field and not on the computer.
  25. I was going into worry mode about you ! I am glad that you posted this. Maybe that is actually the scenario that some of our cliff dwellers are actually talking about. lol - I think that as long as JH owns this team we will have something fun to follow.
