  1. No they absolutely are better than mine - only speak for myself. I kind of like him but my guess would be once again that there likely are former players out there with every bit as much expertise as he has. He happens to be here. Given the option - and if I actually cared about this stuff - the analytical expert with the playing experience would be the one that I would hang my hat on. You see it really is all about personal choice. There are people here who do feel as they they have to prove a point when it comes to this crap. i don't worry much about it. If my automobile needs work, it is likely that a person who has studied the mechanism thoroughly but has never actually worked on a vehicle would not get my business. I would sooner opt for the person who has done the studying and had some practical experience as well.
  2. This is one where there is 0 debate between you and I. Expanding the roster in September the way they do, in my estimation does nothing to make me even want to watch. If we weren't so good, I might not. I think that it cheapens what has been done by the real team players for most of the year. If they want to make changes then, there should be some price to pay.
  3. There have been many changes to the game that I don't particularly like but roster expansion would be close to the top of the list.
  4. seriously - now a whole new language needs to be learned.
  5. Leon is the least popular? Did I miss the popularity poll? If any of these 3 were to be traded, this team would not skip a beat. Believe it or not even our pitchers likely would adjust. I think that in this case much too much is being made of the pitcher-catcher love affair. The issue really is who wants any of these guys enough to give up at the least a ten play ticket to a local municipal golf course.
  6. What frightens me the most with Pedroia is that all it will take is a reaggrevation of that injury and he will likely be done for the rest of the season. I don't think that playing him for a few days and then resting him for a few days will make much difference. It is a big roll of the dice. Hope it works out but I don't think the odds are all that good.
  7. That actually is an excellent point. There are always plusses and minuses to just about everything.
  8. I wonder how this ever turned in to an either or argument? hmmm I would bet that it is still possible to have the best of both worlds.
  9. i love the fact that the use of the term "ace" is subjective - including this term as well as any other of the very subjective ideas and concepts that exist in the game are what make it so special. not everything can nor does it need to be defined. i look at these types of things as a way to use creativity and imagination.
  10. Jack oh Jack where are you. Are these recent postings better than the recurring analytics discussion or any of the other over talked about topics. It is what goes on.
  11. Oh stop that . Now even you are doing it! lol of course former players particularly those with extensive minor league experience would do a better job than Dombrowski- We have been schooled in the following: he has no clue of the importance of having a strong farm - he has always traded away any prospects of value - He knows absolutely nothing about how to build a bullpen. The only gd thing that this bum knows how to do is win consistently.
  12. Not really intended for you Jack. I feel the same way that you do in many respects. I shudder to even say the word "cliff" here. It has taken on a meaning all of its own. It is kind of what gets done here though. It is kind of like politics for me. Being forced to pick a side and being stereotyped if you don't agree with someone. I don't like it much but there is not much that I can do about it. I still like the forum.
  13. Sorry that it gets tiresome for you Jack. Its pretty much the way I feel every time someone takes a ridiculous swipe at DD for helping to create such a successful program. Guess we just have to bear with it all huh.
  14. I'm pretty sure that you are not replying to my comment. I also think that he is competent at what he does. My personal preference, if I had an interest in learning more, would be to learn from someone equally as competent with vast experience actually playing the game. I have no clue whether Alex Speier ever played at any level and I'm not criticizing if he didn't. It would be an entirely personal preference. I'm entitled to that. In a way, I just conducted a little experiment. I proved my point to myself I guess.
  15. Obviously I am butting in here but I'm bored. I have actually come to appreciate Alex Speir and his contributions but in all honesty I know nothing about what his actual background in the game might be. Now, if I did have a deep concern for all of the analytics being used today that directly relate to baseball, I would be willing to bet that I could find someone who had a vast amount of experience in baseball, perhaps even at the professional level who also was extremely competent with all things analytical. Those are the types of people to whom I would listen. There are such things today as the educated athlete.
  16. Still a great hobby!
  17. I had forgotten what that gum was actually like. It was pink. You are right - it softened up after a little while though. Good memories actually. Thanks for reminding me.
  18. He did make some solid points when talking about Pedroia for sure. Who knows right? Sale though is the kind of guy that every team wishes they had. Our local critics want to bring up his injuries, his frailty, or maybe even his clothing likes or dislikes, he is as tough as they come.
  19. Another reason to like Chris Sale to me this morning is his support for Craig Kimbrel. I am simply a fan and because of that there are some things not related to the actual playing of the game that I really don't care too much about. When multi billionaires pretend that paying extra $ in additional taxes is a primary issue for not signing the likes of him and people who constantly clamor for the rich to pay more agree, I want to throw up. Pretending that the money just isn't there and tanking to get any kind of draft choice that may or may not work out is ridiculous. I still hope that Kimbrel comes back to Boston. He deserves better.
  20. Hey when you buy your baseball cards MVP, do they still have that great big slab of gum in there?
  21. Oh don't be sarcastic Nick - It happens all the time - teams consistently win the World Series or at least compete for it year in and year out and still have the most coveted prospects in the game. Now that is sarcasm! You can't please everybody unless you agree with them totally. o Lets go DD.
  22. notin - once again I agree. I am still trying to figure out how I have gotten this far. We used to break open those thermometers on occasion to play with the mercury. The more things change though in reality the more they seem to stay the same. I do still love the old stats even though I absolutely realize their value today is less than what is available to us. I think it also has to do with what your passions are as well. Mine just don't include analytical mastery. Doesn't mean that I don't recognize their importance.
  23. I think that any available metric could be quite helpful when evaluating the value of any player. Not having a total grasp of them all, does not mean that you are limited in your knowledge of the actual game itself and having a total grasp of them does not mean that you know any more about the game than the next old dub who has been involved in the game forever.
  24. Might be you have over simplified things a bit here but there are some points made. The actual game itself thank god really hasn't changed much but the way people want to approach it certainly has. I don't mind at all if I am considered truly old fashioned with respect to my personal approach to the game. There are many people here who can make me look foolish with their incredible grasp of an analytical approach to the game. What keeps me here is that I feel quite confident that I can hold my own in a discussion of what matters the most to me - the actual game.
  25. I don't think that there is much question at all that analytics have and are continuing to change the game. Some will say for the good and some will say just the opposite. A concept that initially has been used to help clubs maximize on field play is seemingly now being used as a useful tool for owners to help keep salaries down. Collusion with respect to owners and the way they are spending has been suggested but it kind of looks like they are using a useful tool to help shape the future of the game.
