  1. Still a great hobby!
  2. I had forgotten what that gum was actually like. It was pink. You are right - it softened up after a little while though. Good memories actually. Thanks for reminding me.
  3. He did make some solid points when talking about Pedroia for sure. Who knows right? Sale though is the kind of guy that every team wishes they had. Our local critics want to bring up his injuries, his frailty, or maybe even his clothing likes or dislikes, he is as tough as they come.
  4. Another reason to like Chris Sale to me this morning is his support for Craig Kimbrel. I am simply a fan and because of that there are some things not related to the actual playing of the game that I really don't care too much about. When multi billionaires pretend that paying extra $ in additional taxes is a primary issue for not signing the likes of him and people who constantly clamor for the rich to pay more agree, I want to throw up. Pretending that the money just isn't there and tanking to get any kind of draft choice that may or may not work out is ridiculous. I still hope that Kimbrel comes back to Boston. He deserves better.
  5. Hey when you buy your baseball cards MVP, do they still have that great big slab of gum in there?
  6. Oh don't be sarcastic Nick - It happens all the time - teams consistently win the World Series or at least compete for it year in and year out and still have the most coveted prospects in the game. Now that is sarcasm! You can't please everybody unless you agree with them totally. o Lets go DD.
  7. notin - once again I agree. I am still trying to figure out how I have gotten this far. We used to break open those thermometers on occasion to play with the mercury. The more things change though in reality the more they seem to stay the same. I do still love the old stats even though I absolutely realize their value today is less than what is available to us. I think it also has to do with what your passions are as well. Mine just don't include analytical mastery. Doesn't mean that I don't recognize their importance.
  8. I think that any available metric could be quite helpful when evaluating the value of any player. Not having a total grasp of them all, does not mean that you are limited in your knowledge of the actual game itself and having a total grasp of them does not mean that you know any more about the game than the next old dub who has been involved in the game forever.
  9. Might be you have over simplified things a bit here but there are some points made. The actual game itself thank god really hasn't changed much but the way people want to approach it certainly has. I don't mind at all if I am considered truly old fashioned with respect to my personal approach to the game. There are many people here who can make me look foolish with their incredible grasp of an analytical approach to the game. What keeps me here is that I feel quite confident that I can hold my own in a discussion of what matters the most to me - the actual game.
  10. I don't think that there is much question at all that analytics have and are continuing to change the game. Some will say for the good and some will say just the opposite. A concept that initially has been used to help clubs maximize on field play is seemingly now being used as a useful tool for owners to help keep salaries down. Collusion with respect to owners and the way they are spending has been suggested but it kind of looks like they are using a useful tool to help shape the future of the game.
  11. I still think that there is a chance that Kimbrel comes back to Boston. Possibly because I like him and partly because I think that the primary people worrying about the Red sox budget to an extreme might be a few posters here.
  12. stopping = you being done (fact). Just keep on keepin on.
  13. I hear you and it is a good thing. I'm a golfer and I play in an area that I think is a bit of a hidden gem. Lake Wales and I am having the time of my life. Important to stay young.
  14. The Price contract or any long term contract for that matter will always be up for debate. it is impossible to say at this point in time whether it was a good sign or not.
  15. Did i hear right the other day that Harper just got a haircut? hmmm
  16. I remember that team real well.
  17. As in never. lol - Frank Robinson was a childhood hero. One of the absolute greatest players of all time.
  18. I know I know - you are right. What I clearly should have asked was if Moon and Larry also felt whether or not employers should be able to have reasonable expectations with respect to clothing and grooming when hiring someone to work for them. Could have been some good backlash there. I'll keep trying my best to stir a few things up!
  19. Not sure how you guys can get away with this without some young person comeback. You and Larry have clearly reached the ranks of the untouchables! lol
  20. For the record, I actually enjoy reading what the folks here who value all things statistical have to say. Moon - I played strato the advanced version for many years. I still have the 78 season kicking around the house. We did not have computers to do our computations for us back in the day (pre 1965). I absolutely give credit to this game for my learning some very basic math facts and being able to actually factor on the fly. I love the game and all things statistical the enhance it. Keep the flood of info coming.
  21. ok - not so much but if that is your interpretation it is ok. I actually thought that someone might see through parts of my statement and understand that I truly think that often times our resident Yankee fan is full of crap.
  22. It certainly has sounded doubtful that he will be coming back but you never know. He won't get what he has been asking for from Boston safe to say but on the other hand who in their right mind would offer him that? What he is asking for and what he will ultimately take if indeed he wants to play may send him back to the Sox.
  23. Wouldn't it be nice for some if the games were actually played out on paper. Stat folk might be happy I guess. Kind of like playing Strato - the advanced version of course. News flash - Games are played on the field. Predict away all you want folks. Quote as many reliable sources that you wish to prove your pre- season points. Have fun but remember - Sometimes all of the predictions go for naught. That is what makes the real season as opposed to the created on paper season much more entertaining. I kind of like our Red Sox.
  24. Have to add though that as each day passes and we get closer to spring, with Kimbrel not finding a fit that he likes, I like our chances of his returning more and more. Not great but there is still a chance.
  25. I'm with you here. Hopefully no one though would be too excited to sign a closer no matter how good to a long term contract costing huge amounts of money. i would still love to see Kimbrel come back but certainly not for the asking price. It it starting to look as though owners feel about the same way. Very little has been said about any of the guys out there looking for these huge $ long term contracts.
