  1. I like this thinking!
  2. There are multiple options right now for a utility third baseman in the Red Sox organization. I think that spring training counts. If, after watching Sandoval, throughout the course of st, the organization decides that he is not the right person to start the season at third base that tells me that he has been outworked and outplayed and the decision to move away from him was not one made in haste. He needs no additional time that could hurt the team come spring. I am just as concerned with what effect this has upon Shaw and the rest of our young ballplayers who have taken it upon themselves to do everything they could do to move forward. Sandoval only needs to prove himself to his coaches and his teammates not to the fan base.
  3. John Farrell is fighting for his job. His recent comments with respect to the third base job being up in the air represent quite a change in attitude with respect to the way he has always viewed veteran players. This spring training does have some significance. It looks like maybe the Red Sox in general feel a small sense of urgency. It really has nothing to do whether or not people like or do not like Sandoval. It has everything to do with who gives them the best chance to win. That is a good thing. It isn't about what have you done for me lately. If Sandoval's fitness level contributes to him not being the best man for the job, he has no one to blame but himself. He will be just another well paid big boy. I don't think that he gets months to prove himself. Maybe Farrell got the memo - put the best players on the field or watch the games from home.
  4. True Dojji but if he is expected to be a little athletic on the field, his current fitness level does leave a bit to be desired.
  5. I think that it is safe to say they won't go bankrupt either. Maybe they have figured out that the Porcello and the Sandoval contracts for sure look ridiculous in hindsight. One or even both may still help us but the contracts are ridiculous in terms of years and $ promised. I'm hoping that the emphasis is now on the number of wins the team can produce with less focus on the numbers on the paychecks. Porcello very well could be serviceable as a 4th or 5th man in the rotation for years to come. Sandoval on the other hand is competing for a job. No one owes him anything. If he doesn't earn the right to be out there, he won't be out there. On the other hand, if he produces and outplays the competition he should start.
  6. I doubt that anything happens - all hypothetical but still interesting. In the current projected outfield this year, I would be ok with a trade of anyone not named Betts. I am ambivalent about Castillo and as much as I like JBJ out there I see him as being replaceable. In the infield I think you have to protect Bogaerts and at least one of the catchers. If I were trading with the Red Sox, I would actually take a chance on Moncada, Benintendi, and Travis. Some would probably prefer them to the guys we call proven m/leaguers. I'm not sure what any of them have actually proven. We are still kind of waiting. i agree with you about Sale's unorthodox delivery. It just doesn't look like it is built to last.
  7. I think that i could live with a trade of Rodriguez and Swihart for Sale. The big question for me would be who else they might want. i think that I would be willing to give them just about anyone else other than Moncada, Travis, and Benintendi.
  8. I know that it isn't a popular opinion but I would understand a trade of Swihart before a trade of Moncada, Benintendi, or Travis. Now, that is assuming Boston still projects Swihart to be a catcher only. I think that the play at first base, third base, and two of the three outfield positions are going to have to be watched carefully.
  9. I would love to see Sale or somebody comparable come to Boston. I wish that I felt more comfortable with the idea of possibly trading players such as Moncada, Travis, Benintendi, and Espinoza. I'm just not sure that the people that everybody projects ahead of them are any better than they are right now. Outside of Betts and Bogaerts I wouldn't be particularly torn up if anyone else on the current projected roster was to get traded. it is probably a little different perspective but i would just as soon see the first three I mentioned starting for this team in April as I would any of the guys who currently look to be guaranteed jobs. Before this is over it is conceivable that we will need a Moncada, a Travis, or maybe even a Benintendi. I also realize that to get you have to give but those are guys that might very well be legitimate stars. IMO much more so than the blocked Margot, Guerra, and whoever.
  10. Team in general is still a work in progress. Adding Price for $ and Kimbrel for prospects that probably would not have played for us have made the team better. No questions there. Most us I would imagine would love to see Hanley and Pablo perform the way we kind of thought they might. It's early but Ramirez looks like he might get the job done. I don't know how much time you give Sandoval. Personally, if his performance hurts his team, I hope that he is at least out of the lineup sooner as opposed to later. Athletically baseball may not be quite as physically demanding as some other sports but unless my television screen is grossly distorted I cannot imagine a person as heavy and wide as Sandoval is being able to compete successfully day and day out without breaking something. He will get his chance for sure but if he can't do the complete job it will very obvious early on and he won't be in that lineup. They will no by the end of April.
  11. A lot of talk about spring training not being particularly meaningful in many cases and I get that but to some it still is. I have been very impressed as I am sure everyone else has with some of these guys that no one has expected a whole lot from. great springs so far - Shaw, Travis, Barnes, Hernandez. Ramirez so far is making a case for being able to get it done. I get that it is early but after Price with Rodriguez down that starting rotation looks very shaky. That said, Kelly is making a strong case to hold a spot. Although the w's and l's really aren't very significant, many of these guys are using this spring to prove that they can either still play at or actually belong at the major league level.
  12. I probably advocate for these young guys more than I should but I like young hard working players. I yapped a lot about Marco Hernandez last year. He just keeps on digging. I like him more than Marrero right now. Sam Travis - enough said.
  13. His behavior to date has been moronic for sure but there but "for the grace of God" go most of us. The illegal substance useage concerns me a lot more than a 19 year old getting into a fistfight with a friend. It is the beginning of a pattern that for sure no one wants to see continued but i think his youth entitles him to at least a little understanding. Is he stupid or untouchable. I don't know the answer to that one but stupid you learn to deal with. Uncoachable not so much.
  14. wait - Would that be one of those donkey like jackasses I've been hearing about?
  15. Politics here too these daze- really?
  16. Agree - It does sound like a good problem to have right now.
  17. I will feel bad as well if his injury puts him behind in the competition. The Red Sox have historically been able to make solid cases for whatever they have wanted to do.
  18. So - What would you suggest they do in the event that Vazquez is healthy and ready to go which he will be quite soon? No one has tried to make any conclusive statements about the situation so far but eventually the Red Sox are going to have to deal with it. Eventually is apt to be sooner as opposed to later. It gives me something to discuss that actually interests me. Doesn't sound to me as though Vazquez is going to be mouselike and just simply go quietly to AAA. He wants to play.
  19. I get the stuff they feed us about not changing a players position before they have mastered their primary one. Guess I have always thought that as a player moves through the system that someone has truly investigated where each of the top prospects might actually be playing someday. For instance - Moncada will likely not be playing second base for the Sox anytime soon. If he is as good as he projects maybe he should be moved sooner. They seem to be playing a game of mumbly chuck musical chairs with many of our prospects in an attempt to get them in the lineup. I hope that they plan to keep the very athletic Swihart but if they wait for him to master his position before they move him, he may never recognize his potential.
  20. still think that the Swihart/Vazquez situation won't be solved by simply sending Vaz back to Pawtucket for a little while. In addition to Price now we hear from Kelly about how much he enjoys having Vazquez behind the plate. Swihart is improving so I guess that it might not be considered a problem but with our current pitching being what it is, at some point, some time, everything will need to be done to give them the best or even any chance of having success. That might mean that very soon Vazquez becomes the everyday guy. Swihart is a talented prospect and that isn't going to change anytime soon.
  21. finally I get it- good one but I'm not quite at the Gossage level although I have to admit I still like looking at a good old box score. When the reported results start to change then I will change as well. I will freely admit though that my approach to the world of athletics leans toward a less academic direction then some. I'm comfortable with that.
  22. I believe that he has a tremendous amount of personal pride. I also do not see the upside in him that many seem to see. At the very best he looks as though he could be a solid middle of the rotation guy. That is not a bad thing but if he is potentially the best we have after Price then good luck with that.
  23. Is this discussion built primarily about who might be at the very best our number 4 guy in the rotation actually more likely our number 5? The bigger picture here seems to be that once we get past Price our starting rotation might have some issues. It wouldn't surprise me at all if we see a deal done sooner as opposed to later.
  24. Old Schoolers see it this way - We all know that it is just a meaningless spring training game - yada-yada-yada. the simple fact remains is that a guy we are counting on to be a mainstay in our rotation for years to come just got the crap kicked out of him by a bunch of guys who aren't supposed to hit. Unless Porcello has virtually no personal pride, which I doubt very much, at some point or another, he will actually have to start getting people out. When you look at our potential rotation after Price without Rodriguez, if it doesn't ring a small alarm even now, you must be a flat liner. Big question might be is how patient DD will be before he decides to make a big move that is going to get everybody talking?
  25. Put him in a basket with tubby and send them off on a salty cruise? What's a little do, re, me to the boys with the bottomless budget.
