  1. Pretty soon the "here comes Pablo thread" might have to be started. 2 hits - 5 or 6 clean innings - no injuries - I'll be all over that one. Come on Panda! - Shaw won't get left out, he'll be in left field.
  2. Nothing wrong with being wrong on this one. Hope all of us doubters get to enjoy our crow. So far so good!
  3. yeah - i was just trying to be nice about that. Pablo's being chunky probably does not have anything to do with his poor fielding but his being grotesquely over weight for a professional athlete might. Also if this is what farrell does when he is anxious, I am all for it. It might actually lead to him being able to get the job done the right way.
  4. The more I think about this, the more I do think that there will certainly be room enough for both of these bats in Boston this year. i love what both players are saying. If we can trust what is coming out of the media, it would be tough to find two players competing for jobs and playing time who had better approaches than these two guys have. If Sandoval proves that he can field his position, I would think that Castillo is going to have to start playing up or he will be the one taking a seat. If this story keeps trending this way, it wouldn't surprise me at all if Shaw winds up in left field.
  5. Hey stop that - wait - where the hell are they though?
  6. if Farrell saying that Shaw very well might be our starting third baseman is something that he is saying because he feels that his job is in jeopardy, do I ever wish that he had felt this way earlier. It really is what it is all about. wanting to win means playing your best players. There is no doubt in may mind that if Sandoval proves to be the best 3rd base option,he will be there. If Shaw beats him out, it won't be because Pablo is "chunky". It is not just lip service to say that the games played in April are just as important as the ones played in September. If your team has performed the way ours has for a few years now, a good start could be essential.
  7. Hey - hey - hey - Is that legal?
  8. Anything to keep us going - anything works!
  9. Sandoval still has a chance to earn the right to play. If Shaw gets the nod, it will be because he clearly has outplayed Sandoval. That will mean that he truly deserves to be out there. I think that it is important to note that this can't be easy on him. He has worked very hard to get to the level he is at. The better of the two should be the one who starts. It goes really without saying that whichever one it is, the better player regardless of contract size or available options will give his team the better chance to win. Maybe the Red Sox are seeing things a little differently this year.
  10. The statements that came out today pretty much declared an open season for the third base job. If Shaw outplays Sandoval over the next couple of weeks, he starts. The statement made by Farrell was so out of character for him that it just looks like they have accepted the fact that there might be quite a disparity between the two. If not, they wouldn't have said a thing. Regardless of what any of us think about the importance of spring training, it looks like they have paved the way just in case. Which ever - it looks like the better player wins the job. What an odd thought!
  11. He is a good player
  12. Reality sucks - screw reality!
  13. I read somewhere that he had gotten bigger during the off-season. He may very well start to get some real attention this year.
  14. glad you added the "in my opinion" to Hernandez.
  15. This makes sense!!!
  16. I like this thinking!
  17. There are multiple options right now for a utility third baseman in the Red Sox organization. I think that spring training counts. If, after watching Sandoval, throughout the course of st, the organization decides that he is not the right person to start the season at third base that tells me that he has been outworked and outplayed and the decision to move away from him was not one made in haste. He needs no additional time that could hurt the team come spring. I am just as concerned with what effect this has upon Shaw and the rest of our young ballplayers who have taken it upon themselves to do everything they could do to move forward. Sandoval only needs to prove himself to his coaches and his teammates not to the fan base.
  18. John Farrell is fighting for his job. His recent comments with respect to the third base job being up in the air represent quite a change in attitude with respect to the way he has always viewed veteran players. This spring training does have some significance. It looks like maybe the Red Sox in general feel a small sense of urgency. It really has nothing to do whether or not people like or do not like Sandoval. It has everything to do with who gives them the best chance to win. That is a good thing. It isn't about what have you done for me lately. If Sandoval's fitness level contributes to him not being the best man for the job, he has no one to blame but himself. He will be just another well paid big boy. I don't think that he gets months to prove himself. Maybe Farrell got the memo - put the best players on the field or watch the games from home.
  19. True Dojji but if he is expected to be a little athletic on the field, his current fitness level does leave a bit to be desired.
  20. I think that it is safe to say they won't go bankrupt either. Maybe they have figured out that the Porcello and the Sandoval contracts for sure look ridiculous in hindsight. One or even both may still help us but the contracts are ridiculous in terms of years and $ promised. I'm hoping that the emphasis is now on the number of wins the team can produce with less focus on the numbers on the paychecks. Porcello very well could be serviceable as a 4th or 5th man in the rotation for years to come. Sandoval on the other hand is competing for a job. No one owes him anything. If he doesn't earn the right to be out there, he won't be out there. On the other hand, if he produces and outplays the competition he should start.
  21. I doubt that anything happens - all hypothetical but still interesting. In the current projected outfield this year, I would be ok with a trade of anyone not named Betts. I am ambivalent about Castillo and as much as I like JBJ out there I see him as being replaceable. In the infield I think you have to protect Bogaerts and at least one of the catchers. If I were trading with the Red Sox, I would actually take a chance on Moncada, Benintendi, and Travis. Some would probably prefer them to the guys we call proven m/leaguers. I'm not sure what any of them have actually proven. We are still kind of waiting. i agree with you about Sale's unorthodox delivery. It just doesn't look like it is built to last.
  22. I think that i could live with a trade of Rodriguez and Swihart for Sale. The big question for me would be who else they might want. i think that I would be willing to give them just about anyone else other than Moncada, Travis, and Benintendi.
  23. I know that it isn't a popular opinion but I would understand a trade of Swihart before a trade of Moncada, Benintendi, or Travis. Now, that is assuming Boston still projects Swihart to be a catcher only. I think that the play at first base, third base, and two of the three outfield positions are going to have to be watched carefully.
  24. I would love to see Sale or somebody comparable come to Boston. I wish that I felt more comfortable with the idea of possibly trading players such as Moncada, Travis, Benintendi, and Espinoza. I'm just not sure that the people that everybody projects ahead of them are any better than they are right now. Outside of Betts and Bogaerts I wouldn't be particularly torn up if anyone else on the current projected roster was to get traded. it is probably a little different perspective but i would just as soon see the first three I mentioned starting for this team in April as I would any of the guys who currently look to be guaranteed jobs. Before this is over it is conceivable that we will need a Moncada, a Travis, or maybe even a Benintendi. I also realize that to get you have to give but those are guys that might very well be legitimate stars. IMO much more so than the blocked Margot, Guerra, and whoever.
  25. Team in general is still a work in progress. Adding Price for $ and Kimbrel for prospects that probably would not have played for us have made the team better. No questions there. Most us I would imagine would love to see Hanley and Pablo perform the way we kind of thought they might. It's early but Ramirez looks like he might get the job done. I don't know how much time you give Sandoval. Personally, if his performance hurts his team, I hope that he is at least out of the lineup sooner as opposed to later. Athletically baseball may not be quite as physically demanding as some other sports but unless my television screen is grossly distorted I cannot imagine a person as heavy and wide as Sandoval is being able to compete successfully day and day out without breaking something. He will get his chance for sure but if he can't do the complete job it will very obvious early on and he won't be in that lineup. They will no by the end of April.
