  1. I don't think that the people who count are disillusioned over this at all. I think everybody sees the potential risks as well as potential upsides. I also don't think in situations like this you operate from fear of what might be either. Maybe there is a slightly different way of looking at things here. Playing your best players just doesn't seem to be a thought that is too outlandish.
  2. Sorry to hear about your health issues. At this point their plan appears to be that Koji makes up part of a team of pitchers who will lead to the closer Kimbrel. In general, which ever one closes isn't really a big deal. The big deal was that the Sox were able to add one of the top arms in the game to help bolster a bullpen that needed to be rebuilt. Hope they all stay healthy.
  3. You might be right about Sandoval being a little more motivated. I would say that if this is what it takes, good for the Sox. If this is a change in approach from Farrell, I would say that it is about time as well. I like him but he has been overly committed to large contracted players, slow to react to situations that have called for some sort of action, and in some instances a little complacent. Although it is a great story, this really isn't a Shaw lovefest or an "I hate fatso" thread. It is about playing your best players. Whether it eventually is Sandoval at third, I still think that Shaw will get an ample chance to show whether or not he is going to be an everyday player. I don't think that Dumbrowski is playing any mind games here. It looks very simple - play the players that give you the best chance to win.
  4. Shaw - Sandoval - Ramirez - Ortiz = Potentially outfield, third base, first base, and dh support and help. Plenty of potential at bats and rest for these guys. This good situation might impact others like Murphy and Castillo.
  5. I think that it could all work out for the better but I'm feeling bad for David Murphy's prospects.
  6. How about a side dish of boiled owl with that crow you tough old .... Whe n you going to start the "let's go Pablo thread?"
  7. Really you say - Kimbrel to be Koji's set up man -
  8. he very well might be a solid player for us for a long time. The issue for me is that if he continues to outplay Sandoval then he should be the one who gets the job. It doesn't have anything to do with contracts or options or what some one thinks he might or might not be in the future. It's about right now. If we want to have the best team that we can have, we should put our best players on the field.
  9. All of the fat jokes aside, this debate really is about who is the better player. if Pablo earns the job, I think that it is a safe bet to see that he will get plenty of support from us desperate ones. The better of the two players should get the playing time.
  10. You bring up some very relevant points here for sure. They shouldn't and probably won't have any bering with respect to what the Red Sox decide to do with Shaw. Shaw's story has been a great one but I don't sense anyone being ready to hit him with the next MVP label. You kind of make it sound like those of us who do appreciate his efforts and feel that he should be rewarded for what he has done are not aware of what his shortcomings might be. I don't think that is true at all. It is ok to breathe deeply and to take a step back but in no way should what anyone thinks Shaw might be capable or not capable of doing in the future should impact what he is doing in the present. The best player should get the job. That is how it is supposed to work.
  11. Pretty soon the "here comes Pablo thread" might have to be started. 2 hits - 5 or 6 clean innings - no injuries - I'll be all over that one. Come on Panda! - Shaw won't get left out, he'll be in left field.
  12. Nothing wrong with being wrong on this one. Hope all of us doubters get to enjoy our crow. So far so good!
  13. yeah - i was just trying to be nice about that. Pablo's being chunky probably does not have anything to do with his poor fielding but his being grotesquely over weight for a professional athlete might. Also if this is what farrell does when he is anxious, I am all for it. It might actually lead to him being able to get the job done the right way.
  14. The more I think about this, the more I do think that there will certainly be room enough for both of these bats in Boston this year. i love what both players are saying. If we can trust what is coming out of the media, it would be tough to find two players competing for jobs and playing time who had better approaches than these two guys have. If Sandoval proves that he can field his position, I would think that Castillo is going to have to start playing up or he will be the one taking a seat. If this story keeps trending this way, it wouldn't surprise me at all if Shaw winds up in left field.
  15. Hey stop that - wait - where the hell are they though?
  16. if Farrell saying that Shaw very well might be our starting third baseman is something that he is saying because he feels that his job is in jeopardy, do I ever wish that he had felt this way earlier. It really is what it is all about. wanting to win means playing your best players. There is no doubt in may mind that if Sandoval proves to be the best 3rd base option,he will be there. If Shaw beats him out, it won't be because Pablo is "chunky". It is not just lip service to say that the games played in April are just as important as the ones played in September. If your team has performed the way ours has for a few years now, a good start could be essential.
  17. Hey - hey - hey - Is that legal?
  18. Anything to keep us going - anything works!
  19. Sandoval still has a chance to earn the right to play. If Shaw gets the nod, it will be because he clearly has outplayed Sandoval. That will mean that he truly deserves to be out there. I think that it is important to note that this can't be easy on him. He has worked very hard to get to the level he is at. The better of the two should be the one who starts. It goes really without saying that whichever one it is, the better player regardless of contract size or available options will give his team the better chance to win. Maybe the Red Sox are seeing things a little differently this year.
  20. The statements that came out today pretty much declared an open season for the third base job. If Shaw outplays Sandoval over the next couple of weeks, he starts. The statement made by Farrell was so out of character for him that it just looks like they have accepted the fact that there might be quite a disparity between the two. If not, they wouldn't have said a thing. Regardless of what any of us think about the importance of spring training, it looks like they have paved the way just in case. Which ever - it looks like the better player wins the job. What an odd thought!
  21. He is a good player
  22. Reality sucks - screw reality!
  23. I read somewhere that he had gotten bigger during the off-season. He may very well start to get some real attention this year.
  24. glad you added the "in my opinion" to Hernandez.
  25. This makes sense!!!
