Nope - not really questioning the move with respect to either party. Personally if Pomeranz becomes that solid #2 or maybe even the 1- that he might become, it would not matter to me what anyone thought of the trade. I truly hope that Espinoza becomes that guy although I would not bet on him doing it. This trade made sense for us when it was done and if Pomeranz is resigned and continues to pitch at the level he is at, it would continue to make great sense going forward. This was win for the Red Sox the day the ink dried on the minor details.

There is no doubt about the fact that Espi could become the pitcher many have suggested that he might. The point that I am trying to make is that no one knows what the end game for Pomeranz might be. Quite a few people have thrown out guesses based on what he has done over the past couple of years. I don't think that they know. I really think that there is chance maybe even a good chance that his best years are ahead of him.

I'm somewhat of a Hanley convert myself. I hope that he can come through for us as well as for himself. I saw him in Portland and am pretty sure that we at least sort of know why he was traded in spite of the awesome potential that he had. He has matured. He seems very solid to me. We need the throw back Hanley! Let's go. -
The latest interview with Pomeranz pretty much sums up how I feel about this big kid. He quite clearly is happy to be here and in no way does he think that we have seen the best of him. he has some solid personal performance goals for the future and I hope we get a chance to see him develop as he moves along. The potential for this pitching staff to be about as good as there is is right there. I would keep as many of them together as I possibly could.

I think that the arguement to not send him back out there for the 8th is valid for sure. Didn't bother me much that he went back out but I think the sensible decision would have been to keep him in the dugout after 7.

Just a question - don't read anything else into it. Are you suggesting that allowing Sale to pitch 6 or 7 innings might have been acceptable but allowing him to go back out there for one more was not?

Now wait - we need to end this little arguement now I think . Never have I said that I think that Sale should have gone back out there just to get to number 300. That was going to come regardless. If I had been the manager I would have yanked him at the end of 7. My primary point is pretty much that if anyone thinks that an obviously heathy and still obviously strong Chris Sale was risking injury and future fatigue if we did get to the playoffs , I'm thinking that they are wrong and are being just a bit overly cautious. Let's just see how it plays out ok. I won't be the one playing the hindsight game. I think that this team will over achieve if they make the playoffs. Suggesting that I might not get your point sort of suggests that you might be condescending just a bit. We have done this dance before.

I'm thinking that there was more than one conversation with JF and Mr. Sale before he came out of that dugout in both the 7th and 8th innings. I'm just thinking that I have criticized JF numerous times for putting out what I thought were very weak lineups in an effort to rest guys. It is his history. He never has been a manager who has taken many risks at all when it comes to players and their rest and health in general. The spots on that old leopard aren't changing folks. I'm sure that sending Sale back out there wasn't an easy decision. It is over. A 99 mph fastball in the 8th! I think that he was ok.

What it suggests to me really is that we have a team that is getting just about as much bang for their buck as they can get. A few twists and turns and we could be behind the Yankess right now and not up by 3. We are good but not good enough to take anything for granted. If resting to some here means getting Sale out of there after 6 or 7, I get that, but having him skip starts right now if he feels strong and ready to go would be something I wouldn't understand. I'm willing to bet that if you took a little poll that everyone of the members of this team would feel the same way. JF has for the most part always erred on the cautious side. I'm pleased that he understands that it is important to win the division.

With that kind of statistical support, why don't we just forfeit a game or two and give everybody some much needed rest. I do love me some of them stats.

No can do. Too many stats a day might befuddle me. Besides I still haven't gotten past you opening up the series for us tomorrow in Cincy. You give us those 5 scoreless innings thats all I want. lol

Based on how lights out that bullpen has been, I think that you bring up a good point. I kept waiting and watching to see if he was done even after 6. Because he had to wait a little longer than he had between innings, I thought that he was done after 7. You could see him in the dugout- didn't put his hat on right away and he didn't get right up and out early. I actually thought that he was done. Maddox was ready to go. I'm glad that it worked out. It was the first game this season that my wife actually stayed up to see through to its' end. When I mention the word sale to her, I don't think that it conjures up an image of Chris Sale!

You know me - I'm with you no matter what! I think that it was an issue for them last night whether to bring him back out in the 8th or not. I wasn't sure who really was doing the talking and who was doing the listening in the dugout. They communicated, he came back out did what he needed and wanted to do and its over. I was taught this little saying early and I think that if there isn't a specific injury involved it still has merit. "What I had, I gave because what I saved, I lost."

Same here. i do have to say that regardless of how things ultimately ended up for him last year after I saw him lock up with Verlander in a pitcher's duel in Fenway, I really really liked the trade. Seeing him live made a difference. A big young lefty with lots of movement on whatever he throws. Glad that it has worked out for him so far.

Was he you think more rested for last night's start? I don't. guess I'm just not convinced that any substantial extra rest is going to make that much difference with Sale. Looks awful too doesn't it - 24 ER's in 25 IP. and I was just starting to buy into all of this statistical bull tacos about how unimportant a stat a pitcher's era is. How many of those runners that he allowed to get on base were runners that scored as a result of someone else not doing their job? I'm not going to argue anymore about this one because in a perfect world I would love to see this guy get some extra rest. I just don't think that last night was the appropriate time. I did kind of think that he was done after 7, but as it turned out, I am more than pleased that he wasn't.

Sure can't disagree with them old stats. Wait a minute - of course I can. I thought he looked pretty good last night. As a matter of fact I thought he looked dominant. I'm not saying that you run him into the ground but guess I am just not that concerned about Chris Sale. You just wanted to see Price get two or three innings didn't you? lol

I think that you have to listen to your players carefully. I'm not sure that if you are specifically referring to Sale that he would look at the accumulated stats and believe that you ought to categorize him as one of those guys that gets fatigued and tires toward the end. If someone was going to suggest that to him, I'm pretty sure that I would decline doing that job. If you or anyone else gives me all of the stats (facts?) that you can dig up to show that this might be the case, I probably still would not buy that it is fatigue that caused him to not win every game that he has pitched in this year. Sometimes you lose - in his case more times you win. Do you really think that he looked pooped out at all last night?

Play by marrero late in the game last night was a real gem. A bare haneded grab and throw - Sale appreciated that as much as he did the home run he hit. Probably more! have to say - i really enjoyed listening to Todd Walker's color commentary last night. I thought that he was very good. His love for the time he spent in Boston came through loud and clear as well.
