  1. earned in one way - boys in the dugout caught it! tremendous
  2. tough tough team - starts right there in the dugout
  3. My guess - Our current GM knew exactly who the best fit for this team would be in JD Martinez. DD I think is that good plus he is an old horse trader.
  4. Clearly Max is your primary supporter here Moon. We all need support. I'm just kidding I kind of like reading what both of you post. I don't always agree but that is a good thing and neither of you is particularly stubborn. I like that. Admitting that you are wrong now and then or even suggesting that you might not always be right is an attribute. I'm wrong a lot so no problem for me. lol Plus the fact that I love communicating with people who actually lived through the times that I have.
  5. good guess right! I was 11 in in '62 - my best year of little league!
  6. I love this historical perspective. My grandfather was able to experience the earliest championships but obviously never saw another one. Like so many others, he loved that team and listened to every game of every season. My passion for the game came from him.
  7. What were you 10 then you young old coot?
  8. I loved that team as well. I'm still convinced that Doug Griffin would have had a great career as our second baseman had he not been beaned. I also think that Siebert and Culp were better than that. Once again that pitching staff looked pretty good on the proverbial paper.
  9. That will be a spring, summer, and fall that I will never forget. All that ******** I just said about not being able to compare athletes and stuff today with yesterday forget some of that! - Captain Carl had quite possibly the greatest individual season that I have ever witnessed. "Th man we call Yaz!"- I bet you have the "Impossible dream" album. I had that as well as the "Havlicek Stole the Ball" - all lost in the shuffle of becoming a f***ing adult I say sadly although liife has been good.
  10. ditto for 1978 - Let's see - how many were we up on the the fourth of July?
  11. Of course it is sufficient. I don't see too many people here being hung up on it. At the same time remembering these greats and sharing things that we actually experienced is a fun activity. I've got great memories from the early 60's to the present and some here got me beat. I like the sharing.
  12. You are right. Trying to compare teams and athletes from different eras is impossible to do really. I believe that it is a generational type of thing. Some of us have had a real opportunity to see so many great great players from multiple decades. We all have our personal opinions about how the best would fare today. One of the things that I have noticed is that when people talk about the impact Chris Sale has made on this team, they quite often make mention of Pedro's greatness which of course was legit. What I say with all due respect to the people who shudder at the thought of anyone using steroids, when Roger appeared on the scene for this franchise, it was like something we had never seen before. A literally dominating, big bodied type of kid. Every time he took the mound in his early days for sure, you just had the feeling that a no no was right around the corner. I would never say that he was the best but in his prime he was as good as anyone that I have been in a Red Sox uniform. Maybe the numbers don't support that opinion but he changed the landscape for the Sox.
  13. I understand and I pretty much thought that you would feel like you do. I just don't look at things that way. In my mind, DD saw an opportunity to take a shot at a young potentially very talented arm and he went for it. If I looked back at any number of trades that we have made over the decades and re-evaluted them based on information we have now, or what the current situation we are in is now, I would likely not like any of our GM's that have come and gone in my lifetime. It would for sure drive me crazier than I already am. I've never been a what if kind of guy. I just tend to make a decision and then try work things out as well as I can. Lots of choices never have worked well for me. OCD type of thing. I understand that lots of mistakes can get made this way but that is the way I see many of the trades DD has made. I do respect your opinion on this one though.
  14. I've been reading through and even though some of the guys on that 1978 team would never be considered for the HOF, they were really so very very good. Rick Burleson(the rooster) - Jerry Remy - George Scott (even though by then he had seen better days) and probably have to even mention Hobson. What an incredible lineup they sent out day after day.
  15. You know how I feel about this one I bet Slasher. The jury is still out as to whether it will look good in the long term but no matter how much more we all want out of Pomeranz, he has helped us. If Espinoza ever gets to the bigs and pitches like all of the scouts promised he would, you can "I told you so" me to death. I will take my punishment! lol he better get there within the next 2 or 3 years though because by that time I might not remember what happened so long ago.
  16. I wish that I had been bright enough to phrase what you have phrased so very well. Not enjoying the criticism of Cherington is one thing but trying to compare what the two have done doesn't seem particularly fair to me. Good luck to Ben Cherington but as I have said many times over, I am really happy with what Dombrowski has done and regardless of the criticism aimed at him here personally I think that he is the guy for us now and moving into the future as well.
  17. Wait - was Larry Lucchino alive back then? he must have been because he is responsible for every bad move that Ben made during his tenure. Eventually more people will come over to the dark side and go along with us losers in thinking that we have a pretty good GM who is very interested in winning now and in the future.
  18. I agree with you so much here Moon that it is making me nervous. Pretty sure this opinion will get raked over once again but oh well. Pressure to perform can hurt even the very best at anything. Adding JD to that lineup certainly helped end any case of the "I have to hit one out of here" syndrome that any of our hitters might have had.
  19. Just read the game thread and yup MVP's comment goes down as a beaut! Good entertainment. I now can see why fewer and fewer people tune in for the game threads. (not really - lol) Reads to me like a pretty good time if your spine is reasonably straight. Great job!!!
  20. heard this morning on the radio that comparing Sale and Colon was like looking at the number 10. I like that. Also one person posed the question how many Sales would it take to make a Colon.
  21. Works for me. Good observation.
