  1. Although it is fun to try to do, it is absolutely impossible to compare the greatest from different generations. Russell did certain things better than perhaps any big man has done to this day. Does that make him the best player - depends on the criteria. If I was given the opportunity to start a team that I was building with one free pick from any era, it would be Magic Johnson. But I certainly would not think of him as my greatest player pick. Russell I think has to be considered the greatest winner of all time but having watched Lebron play for a while now I think that a very strong case could be made for him being the greatest player of all time.
  2. Machado's display of crude stupidity might seem like fun and funny to some. I'm betting any coach with any class would hate to have to deal with the idiot regardless of his immense talent.
  3. notin - Bill Russell is considered to be the greatest bb player of all time - followed closely by wilt! Depends on which "authority" you ask.
  4. I love and have always loved the way Pedroia played the game. I agree with you though. i think that they were so desperate for leadership from the field that it seemed natural to look at a veteran with Pedroia's resume as the next guy. It is a role he never wanted and you are right never good at. Sadly i can't get by the "it wasn't me" part of his history. i don't hold grudges but I could care less whether he comes back or not.
  5. NY Giants fan since 1958 and I would take Marino over Manning in any scenario anywhere at anytime.
  6. I'll give anyone credit for hiring someone who understood the science of hitting as well as Manny Ramirez.
  7. ty - I also think that there have been other things done that we have not seen or heard about simply because they tend not to get reported. Upper level management as well as our manager made an effort to bring in some real character people who have helped create a more focused atmosphere. The older veterans on this team for the most part are the types of people most of us would want leading a group. This stuff leads to a whole bunch of people having "fun" .
  8. At the risk of being accused of condescending because I tend to look at things through a coaches eye regardless of what sport it is, no coach I know wants to have to deal with silly little outward attention grabbing displays by their athletes. It is just the way it is. Look at me look at me look at me = ******** and overrides team focus. Fans see these displays as fun and individuals being individuals but most coaches don't. I'm pretty sure that this team has as much fun doing everything that everybody has done but they don't do it to entertain us. They probably have quite the time in the locker room. Overall they play hard and pretty solidly from a fundamental standpoint. They are professional athletes who look like they are doing things the right way. I think that they are having lots of fun!
  9. I tried to like him. Oh well.
  10. I like the way you are thinking about this.
  11. Count em up for me notin will you - need to get my beauty sleep.
  12. I've been trying for a while now to make this point but I don't think that anyone is listening. lol It's all about the rings I guess. Whatever, this season is and has been very successful regardless of what is coming up. My prediction of course is the good guys on the correct coast are going to win.
  13. When you surround yourself with good people good things tend to happen. The Red Sox are the best team in baseball. They have been the best team in baseball for some time now. Can they be beaten? Of course - any team can be. For them to ever have been considered underdogs is ridiculous regardless of what the papers say. i'd get some new papers.
  14. It is conceiveable I guess to think that Tito might not have had the balls to call a fool a fool in the end.
  15. You know what, when you actually are talking about the greatest coaches most fans use wins and losses to make their final decision. Most coaches, people on the inside don't. There is so so much more that goes into it. I think that Cora has great great potential.
  16. Getting your players to understand the value of useful analytics I think is probably beneficial but to those guys on the field I'm guessing that it is just a small piece of the puzzle. There are so many other essentials in coaching that have to be dealt with.
  17. Hey I'm ready. I would be ok with it as well. I've been reading the articles. Stunned - surprised - basically the same for me. Maybe I should have said surprised. I think that I am going to have the opportunity to do something that I have dreamed about since I was 4 years old - attend a World Series game.
  18. I think that the thinking for the most part here for sure is that one reason for Cora's success is his age which allows him to better communicate with this current generation of players. Everybody tends to think that he is just such a player's manager right. I bet that we would be surprised to find out how much in reality he is in charge of this team. He is now surrounded with the types of players he wants and he is managing in the manner that he chooses. I'm guessing that he is very clear in that locker room and that he isn't afraid to deal quickly with any and all of the little nuisance items that pop up. If he is what people think a player's coach is fine but I think that he is clearly running the show.
  19. With respect to the ring theory - sorry I don't buy that. I have seen so many wonderfully talented coaches never win one. They just didn't get quite lucky enough. With respect to players and rings - Oh well - poor Ted I guess - I wonder if his lack of rings means that I can no longer consider him the best hitter of all time. NOT That would kind of be like what I have said before that that must mean that Eli Manning will go down as being a better QB than Dan Marino and that is a joke.
  20. i don't think that there would be one Red Sox fan who would question the talent at the plate that Manny Ramirez had. He helped lead this team to championships. He was just big old free wheeling fun loving Manny right? If people didn't like Manny they just don't get it right. Hey - I appreciated what he did and was glad that we had him. There is a big difference between not really liking his act and appreciating his ability to hit. It is ok to folks to feel this way. It doesn't have to be one side or the other. But hey - I don't have to like Clemens to still appreciate what he meant to this franchise either. I'm thinking that might be one of the reasons I like this team so much. I don't see any fools. Maybe I'm missing something I guess but all I see are players who are focused and not in need of constant attention.
  21. OK - this is a post that I truly love - I also consider myself blessed to have a 6 year old grandson who has the early passion for baseball as well as all other games played outside in the fresh air. We can talk about this game all we want to but having experienced and actually knowing the game in my opinion is what it is all about. I don't mind a bit if someone who I happen to think has experienced the game and understands it takes me to school with respect to it.
  22. oh notin - I think that you would probably be surprised to know that there were a few others who could see through this one.
  23. The option of course played a role but we really don't know what the truth of the entire situation was thus the speculation. Maybe I'm alone in my thinking as well but I believe that there was more to this story. I think that the inevitability that he was going to be sitting on the bench caused concern for Cora in more ways than one. Because I think that Cora is a very good manager with an oh so bright future, I'm giving him some credit with respect to the decision to release Hanley which obviously turned out pretty well for us. No drama. Most coaches tend to like no drama.
  24. From the mid to late 50's to the present, if I had to pick an ultimate favorite Red Sox team this would be it but boy it would be close. 67 and 75!!!
