  1. Carefully, I hope.
  2. Just to play devil's advocate, at least throwing a slider requires physical skill by the player. The shift involves no skills of players. They don't even decide where to position themselves. It's all done by the team's data analysts.
  3. And another Freudian slip!
  4. In that poll that MVP cited: 36% in favor 44% against 20% undecided Now, if we can turn 3/4 of the undecideds into yes votes, it's 51-49 in favor! I'm just trying to have some fun with this nonsense.
  5. Fans and people who work at parks etc. will be the big losers.
  6. Baseball really is America's Game, I guess. Major League Baseball seems to represent everything that's good and bad about the country.
  7. It seems like there are too many issues, frankly. Human beings tend to like to make things more and more complicated. The luxury tax nuances being one example.
  8. I read an article that suggested the move toward banning the shift is from the players. Freddie Freeman was making some comments about how it's not easy to change one's approach to go the other way because of how hard pitchers are throwing et cetera. Then there's our old friend, MLB consultant Theo Epstein, who was hired to assist with possible refinements in the game, and I think this was one of the biggest issues he's been looking at.
  9. The truth is I don't disagree with your argument. I'm just not going to let this bother me. Old Red is right - more people would rather see the shift gone, and that's why it's happening.
  10. I'm much the same, with all sports now. With a PVR you can cut down the viewing time a ton.
  11. I think the average fan's perception is much like Old Red's - no sympathy for either side.
  12. And even Theo Epstein said the increasing use of analytics has hurt the quality of the game itself.
  13. I think that's a matter of perception.
  14. Sure, I'd be saying "Why can't we get an owner like the Red Sox have?" It's the other side of the same point.
  15. Cancelling games hurts everyone. As others have said, the owners can afford the losses more.
  16. Obviously no one wants to see the best 1200 players replaced by the next 1200 players. By the same token, I'd rather not see John Henry replaced by Angelos or Moreno. The whole argument is just plain dumb!
  17. There already are a whole lot of arbitrary rules in the game though. The pitcher has to throw the ball from 60' 6" away. That's pretty arbitrary.
  18. I just want baseball back, flaws and all.
  19. I was not one of those people wondering why he didn't bunt more. He hit over .300 in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2016. Maybe we should look at his BABip.
  20. Of course, but what makes you think the shift only took hits away from him and didn't give any back? I think there are actually stats on hitting against the shift.
  21. Right, but we were talking about replacing the best 1200 with the next best 1200. So weaker players going against weaker players.
  22. Not talking about individual plays, talking about yearly numbers.
  23. I don't see one. Do you?
  24. If you think we would have done as well the last 20 years with Peter Angelos or Arte Moreno as owner, you're certainly entitled to your opinion...
