Fair enough. The Yankee forum I follow is blaming it on Bloom for hooking Peralta too soon, for not using Schmidt instead of Taillon, because Taillon has hardly ever pitched in relief etc.

One thing I have noticed in my years of watching baseball is that starters often struggle when called on as late inning relievers in postseason games. As Taillon just did for the Yankees. There are some notable exceptions of course, Randy Johnson in 2001, Bumgarner in 2014, Lester in 2016, and several members of the Red Sox 2018 rotation.

You are contradicting yourself, though. Yesterday you said "2022 does not mean anything for what happens in 2023". But with Kike you're saying "what have you done for me lately". So obviously what happened in 2022 means plenty to you.

In Kike's last full season with the Dodgers he started 100 games and subbed in 30. He was 6th in games started. I don't see how you can be called a backup player with those numbers. It doesn't compute.

I don't know. Ben Zobrist got called a Swiss Army Knife. Playing multiple positions doesn't necessarily make you a sub or a backup.

No, but using "super-sub" for a starter is bad terminology.

Even if Kike led his team in games started, Old Red would still call him a super-sub or some such thing.

In 2019 with the Dodgers, for example, he started 100 games and appeared in 30 others. Most importantly for this discussion, he was 6th on the team in plate appearances. That makes you a regular, ain't no way around it.

But again, they still ended up with a $234.5 million payroll for tax purposes. Acquiring more actual big leaguers in June-July would only have increased that, and would also have meant trading some prospects, presumably. And probably all for naught.

Now Berrios was a trade-and-extend, which is what Talksox intelligentsia are saying is the key to our turnaround. I guess even with a trade-and-extend you really have to get it right!
