  1. The team doesn't seem to be writing off 2023. I think we'll see more spending but they'll stay under the limit.
  2. Well, this gives us about an extra 12 mill to play with this year. 12 mill over 10 years = 1.2 mill per year. Seems to me this is better.
  3. I don't see it as a loophole. It's just about timing of payments. Some contracts have crazy long-term deferrals. This is just the flip side of that.
  4. Of course in some cases the risk in surgery may be not only to the player but to the team.
  5. Yes, the signing bonus just gets spread out over the term of the contract for AAV purposes. Technically it would increase the present value of the money, because he's receiving the bonus in advance. I expect there are provisions that cover all of this.
  6. Everyone is entitled to be questioned on the quality of their work.
  7. This is more about the examinations they do before the guy gets to sign on the dotted line, i.e. Sale and Story.
  8. Our doctors seem to be the medical equivalent of "Wave 'em in Wendell"...
  9. The obvious question is whether Story's flexor strain in 2021 was a red flag that shouldn't have been ignored. But our medical staff cleared Sale and they cleared Story. $285 million later...
  10. Not a lot of detail in that tweet.
  11. Story's contract is definitely looking terribly similar to Sale's...
  12. Also from The Athletic: Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom said the team doesn’t have a timetable for Story’s recovery yet, adding he “certainly would not rule out a return sometime during 2023.” Might not even see him this year.
  13. Per Jen McCaffrey, The Athletic: Following the season, Story had no elbow problems, but when he ramped up his offseason workouts and began throwing just before Christmas, he started to feel pain in his elbow. Story visited a local orthopedic doctor near his home in Texas before flying to Boston to get the elbow evaluated by team doctors. Both groups decided the internal bracing surgery was the best option.
  14. Wishful thinking, but this wouldn't be so bad if it compels them to sign Andrus.
  15. The answer always seems to be "they were hoping rest would take care of it".
  16. Who gets worried over a measly $185 million?
  17. That should put to rest any ideas about him going back to shortstop...
  18. It's an unusual case. Apparently the injury may never become an issue, but if it does, it could be a huge one. And with this much money at stake you can see teams being nervous.
  19. "Assuming", yes. There's obviously something pretty concerning there. The guy does have a plate in his leg, after all.
  20. Correa's guaranteed money went from $350 mill (Giants) to $200 mill because of the medical concerns.
  21. 2 to 4 years, what a sick joke.
  22. Those defensive numbers get so confusing. Andrus had an fWAR of 3.5 in 2022. That's the first number I look at.
  23. The Cots number assumes that Devers's 2023 AAV is 30.1 million. We'll have to wait to find out if that's correct, or if it's 17.5 million. Pretty important difference.
  24. Are Verdugo, Duran and Dalbec really going to do it for the Marlins?
