Hitting is more important, but when most of your fielders stink, that's obviously a serious problem too.
The front office is supposed to know things like this. I'm putting all the blame on them. What we think doesn't matter much.
Sox fans don't hate defense. They just think it would nice to have a player or two who can both hit and field. Too bad the front office hasn't been able to get or keep players like that. Maybe John Henry didn't care enough about defense in his dealings with Betts.
If Verdugo's offense didn't fall apart again last year people would like him more. Plus, last year of contract, attitude issues and all that.
Younger and more upside, though. (Maybe the Yankees effed him up.) Plus it helps when you're Steve Cohen and you can set $13 million on fire if you feel like it. Plus tax.
It's a dicey proposition.
When DD traded for Sale we had 3 guaranteed years. With Burnes you get 1 guaranteed year, and if he does sign an extension, it would have to be a hefty one.
So why not just go the free agent route?
It's too risky for non-baseball reasons. Just look what happened with Dermody, a guy who pitched 4 innings for the Red Sox.
As mvp suggested, I think he'll go to a lower-profile team where he can try to mend the image a little, if that's possible.
There are more big money teams out there than before. That's part of why we dropped to middle of the pack in spite of coming close to the tax threshold.
The Rangers might keep spending for all we know. The Phillies' owner likes to spend and Dave is happy to help.
You really have become a non-believer of the Sox FO, even more so than me. For now I'm convinced they'll make a big signing or trade or two. And no one will be much more upset than me if they fail.
