  1. Would have been nice if they tried, though.
  2. There's something really weird about all of Boras's Big 4 getting these little pillow deals. Not sure what the explanation is, but pretty sure it ain't good.
  3. Not really baffling with the Yanks, because they're in a 110% tax bracket. That makes a $25 million salary cost $52.5 million.
  4. Well, you can't say they didn't warn us. At the joyous Winter Weekend Sammy said the payroll would be lower and they didn't line up on any of the big name free agents.
  5. From what he's said, I think Casas realizes he can make himself a bunch of money by having a big season and improving his fielding, then talking extension again.
  6. There's a classic picture of Henry at the end of this story. You can almost picture his tongue flicking out to catch a passing fly. https://nypost.com/2024/03/21/sports/boston-tv-station-proves-no-one-cares-about-the-red-sox/
  7. Trust but verify. In other words, trust 'em until they give you reason not to...
  8. Yeah, if it's pitchers doing drills in the outfield, Mr. Silly.
  9. The 2024 K/BB ratios clearly tipped the scales. But seriously, I think we're in reasonably good hands with Breslow, Bailey et al making decisions like this.
  10. Pitching Brain Trust
  11. We just have to hang in there for John Henry's deathbed memoirs...
  12. PBT is making calls.
  13. Oh I get the logic. But if he flames out you might also be stuck with a $38.5 million bill for nada, so it wasn't exactly risk-free.
  14. We still don't really know what they're planning on this year. One could argue that if it was a 100% punt they wouldn't even have done the Giolito deal. As for Casas, they have the option of deferring the start of the extension until 2025, correct?
  15. Have to temper expectations, but there are some definite glimmers of hope for this team.
  16. I was thinking something like this: 4 years 92 mill 26 24 22 20 Opt-out after Year 2. Sox probably wouldn't even do this though.
  17. FWIW Joel Sherman is hearing that Montgomery's contract ask has gone from (rough figures) 7/175 to 5/135. Seems he has a couple of offers on table but obviously still well short of the ask.
  18. Whitlock stepping up and becoming a legit starter (and staying healthy) would fool a lot of us and be a big plus for the team, needless to say.
  19. What about the games tonight and tomorrow night against Texas?
  20. You mis-spelled cheapest.
  21. Best case for no trade would be the vesting option kicking in.
  22. Who needs greatness. I'll take playoffs.
  23. The Braves might get 3 good years from Sale at a very reasonable price and Grissom might be a total bust. Or Sale might pitch 10 innings for the Braves and we might get 5 good years from Grissom at a very reasonable price. The possibilities are myriad.
  24. We all know Chris Sale has serious upside IF HEALTHY. That's easy to understand too.
  25. It was a gutsy trade by Breslow. As he's well aware, it could make him look really good or really bad.
