  1. Henry said he plans to own for another 10 years. Also I think they will exceed the Luxury Tax threshold this year. They are very close to it already.
  2. A little strange, but the only thing he disclosed was about Beckett being PO'd about BV's comments about taking too long on the mound. He gave the impression they had a long talk after that.
  3. I think Crawford needs a little latitude here too. Maybe he was really messed up about what happened last year and not ready to talk yet. He deserves a chance to make things right.
  4. You have to admit Valentine has been brought into a situation that is both unusual and difficult. If they hired, say, Sveum, and he handled these same questions by saying 'it's being looked after' or something equally uninformative, a lot of people would be angry about that too. They'd be saying 'same old crap, meet the new boss, same as the old boss' and things like that.
  5. I think Francona was successful up until 2008. In retrospect, losing that series against the Rays was kind of the beginning of the end for him.
  6. Not sure is Scioscia is a good example, because he's a manager who has the option of just shipping the player out of town if he doesn't like him. Napoli says that's what happened to him.
  7. I was a Tito fan. Personally I think it's much too early in the game to judge Valentine one way or the other. With regard to what he revealed about his talk with Beckett, I don't see it as a big deal. He said Beckett was pissed off about his remarks about taking a long time between pitches. I think we already knew that. He also said they had a long conversation after that and it went pretty well. Beckett should be able to handle what Valentine said. The guy is making 17 million a year.
  8. FWIW Rich Hill thinks he'll be ready to pitch 'early this season'.
  9. "Talksox, where even the phony threads are worth reading."
  10. Good call, and it's half done now.
  11. A couple of other points about A-Gon's late-season fatigue. -Coming off shoulder surgery. -Home Run Derby. A-Gon consistently denied that it affected him, after the season Magadan said the opposite.
  12. jung, it sounds like what you're saying is the Red Sox fell into the same trap the Yankees did in the early 2000's, trying to sustain championship-caliber teams and keep their hungry fanbase fed by plugging in high-priced free agents year after year, resulting in overpriced talent, wasted money and an aging team.
  13. I think they need to bite the bullet and sign Madson as closer. It'll be expensive and put them over the tax limit, but it'll clear up the biggest question mark the team has, and it'll give them a shot at being a playoff contender and give the fans some hope for this year. Also it'll give them at least two solid end-of-game relievers for the next 3-4 years or whatever. Then they can let Bard have his chance at starting and patch together a rotation somehow.
  14. I would love to see Boras cost Madson a pile of money. Nothing against Madson, but few things would make me happier than to see Boras humiliated.
  15. Agreed, Francona clubhouse management style was pretty successful up until 2011.
  16. Good post, jung. I'm not at the same place you are, not yet anyway. But good post.
  17. If the Yankees are seriously interested in Kuroda we better move on is right. Kuroda's agent is just milking the situation for a few extra dollars before the Yanks makes the announcement. Oswalt?
  18. And Hale took a lot of grief for being too cautious. As I recall Manny ran through Hale's stop sign several times and made it home safely. Maybe Manny will be a good third base coach.
  19. I can't see any way they would give up all that farm talent for Gonzalez. I think a one year deal for a starter, and they hope that Buchholz comes back, maybe Bard gives some starts, maybe Lackey comes back next year. I know that's a lot of hopes and maybes but I think that's what we're looking at this year.
  20. I don't know if there's really enough data to be sure about that. He's only had 9 career starts. OPS against by pitch count: 1-25 .610 26-50 .639 51-75 .806 76-100 .453 He had some very good outings of more than 3 innings in 2011.
