    You have to figure if the Rangers were willing to post a 50 million + fee, they've got another 80 million or so behind it for his contract. Crazy money, for sure.

    The view from the top floor of the Prudential building is worth checking out. Also the brunch at the Top of the Hub restaurant there was pretty incredible the last time I tried it...mind you that was 25 years ago, but I would guess it's still pretty damn good. Only trouble is you might have to lie down for awhile after eating it.

    I've got quite a few Sox books: Both Shaughnessy books All Bill Lee's books Yaz-recent autobiography Faithful-Stephen King Now I Can Die in Peace-Bill Simmons Feeding the Monster-Seth Mnookin Personally I think the Shaughnessy books are actually very good, although I hate a lot of his columns. The Bill Simmons book is a very good read-it's just a collection of his online essays but it works. The Seth Mnookin book is good. Bill Lee's autobiographical books are excellent, and very funny of course. The Yaz autobiography stands out as a great coffee table book-some fantastic pictures of the Sixties/Seventies teams. I've borrowed some from the library as well. Damon's book Idiot is good for a laugh only. Pedroia's autiobiography is worth reading, because his personality really comes through it.

    As crazy as it seems $15 million a year isn't ace money anymore. It's #2 money. Burnett, D-Lowe, Lackey, now Buehrle, all getting that much. Ace money is 22 million plus-Sabathia, Santana, Cliff Lee. That 50% more than $15 million...incredible.

    nick, they took on two enormous 7-year contracts last year...this offseason they're in the position of being close to the luxury tax threshold without even doing anything...I can't see how that signals what you're suggesting...the Yankees haven't made any big moves yet either, does that mean Hank and Hal are getting ready to sell?

    I like Buehrle, but he has a career ERA of 4.95 at Fenway, and he's 1-8 against the Yankees with a 6.38 ERA.

    Yep, the Crawford signing and the Gonzalez trade/extension certainly demonstrated the cheapness and lack of commitment. Some people might say 300 million on 2 contracts shows some commitment. Good for you for seeing through all that.

    C'mon now. The Red Sox had the best bullpen in the league in 2007 and were close to the top in 2004, 2008 and 2009.

    You keep the posting fee if you don't sign the player. That was made clear in the Dice-K proceedings which Boras dragged out until the final hour.

    The Rays have done a brilliant job in the draft, especially with pitching. Can they maintain that now that they're finishing so high in the standings? We'll see. At some point the combination of high finishes and low budgets has to catch up with them...

    Here's another way to look at it. In the 10 years of the Henry ownership the Sox have reached 95 wins 6 times. In the prior 52 years they reached 95 wins 4 times.

    I think the re-signing of Andrew Miller makes plenty of sense, though I trust they're not actually counting on him. It's a non-guaranteed deal which can cost at most a little over $1 million. We're getting a new pitching coach, maybe something can be salvaged from this guy yet. At the least maybe they can convert him to a decent reliever.

    There are rumors that Bobby Jenks will be playing Santa. The cash-strapped Sox brass need to get some value for their $12 million.

    Wow, that really is amazingly vague and lame. And it sounds like we're going to get a nice box of pens and paper back for Epstein.

    Sure. Just like Sabathia said several times that he wouldn't use the opt-out in his contract. We should all be laughing our asses off when we hear such things.

    I don't think going over the tax threshold like they have is such a big deal. Okay, if you do it two years a row the rate goes to 40%. But if they never go over the limit by a huge amount the Red Sox are never going to pay that much in tax, relative to their overall revenues and expenses.

    I don't think you even have to interview anyone, if you're good at making stuff up. C. J. Wilson says that a lot of the things that have been reported about what's going on with his free agency are 'complete lies'.

    If the Sox could pull off a trade for the A's Bailey that could really work. His numbers were off a bit last year but his first two seasons were Papelbon-esque. Overall he's converted 75 of 84 save opportunities. Plus he'll be relatively cheap. Will take something significant to get him. Rangers are reportedly very involved.

    Good one. I wouldn't be surprised if one of the networks did propose it to the Sox, but the deal didn't get done because of issues over compensation.
