  1. This is 3 years in a row teams have not been interested in keeping Damon.
  2. They were playing the Brewers and Marichal got knocked out after only getting one out. The Sox were down 4-0 but came back to win 8-6. Dick Pole got the win in 7 strong innings of relief. Beniquez was playing center but didn't make any catches while Marichal was in. Dwight Evans and Bernie Carbo had 2 RBI each. A little of that I remember, the rest is courtesy of Baseball-Reference.
  3. Oh well, good games today for Beckett and Iglesias.
  4. I've got no problems with Papelbon. He was key for us winning in 2007 and he pitched great for us 90% of the time. He has a bit of a mouth sometimes but I don't think there are any bad intentions behind it.
  5. The first game I ever saw at Fenway was in 1974 and Marichal was the starting pitcher.
  6. Fred Cusick stuck around a long time. I remember him doing Bruins games in the late Seventies. He had one of those classic voices. Ken Coleman was the classic Red Sox radio voice, I think.
  7. This is no ********, I was following the game on my transistor radio when Luis Aparicio fell rounding third base in Detroit in 1972. I can still remember it clearly, because it was my first Red Sox 'WTF just happened?' moment.
  8. I read something semi-interesting by SI's Verducci today. He suggested that with the expanded interleague play starting next year, the two leagues are going to have to decide to either use the DH in both leagues or eliminate it. And he thinks that it's more likely that the NL will adopt the DH, because the players union will make a big push for it (more jobs available).
  9. You might see a few pitch counts into the 120's but I don't think you'll see it with any consistency. Verlander is one of the few guys a manager would be comfortable doing that with. Sabathia had 3 pitch counts of 120 and over last year, but the first wasn't until August 30. I do agree that Valentine will try to increase a bit from Tito's limits.
  10. How did Buchholz look?
  11. Agreed that there's plenty of concern about him being effective. There seems to be another concern out there about Bard getting messed up to the point he's useless in either role, because of what happened with Joba. But I can't think of too many cases like Joba's.
  12. One guy that doesn't get talked about much who could be a good asset for this year's bullpen is Atchison. He pitched well last year. 2.64 ERA and .96 WHIP in Pawtucket, 3.26 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in Boston-30.1 innings.
  13. Correct. My props are limited to his evaluations of prospects...I do like it when somebody gets out ahead of the crowd on one of our prospects and turns out to be right. Fred also mentioned Swihart, I have heard good things about him and also Bogearts...this franchise could really use some young stars coming up.
  14. Fred's been touting Lavarnway for a couple of years now, since before too much was known about him, so if Lavarnway does turn out to be the real deal I'll have to give him props on that one.
  15. Meanwhile Ryan Lavarnway just crushed a home run off Scott Baker in the first inning of the first spring game.
  16. A lot of star athletes from other sports have had dreams of becoming pro golfers. Only one has ever succeeded-former NFL quarterback John Brodie, who qualified for the senior tour and won a tournament.
  17. The fact there are no defenders doesn't mean it isn't difficult. If you want to do an apples-to-apples comparison of hitting a baseball to directly comparable activities, the problem is that there aren't very many. One of the other difficult activities mentioned in the survey was pole vaulting. No defenders there either.
  18. I believe it's reaction time that is tipping the scales in favor of hitting the baseball. And that's fine. I accept that it's an extremely difficult thing to do. But on the other hand, all you are attempting to do is hit something. Can you compare this to other difficult sport tasks that require skill and accuracy? Such as hitting the green on a 250-yard par 3 or nailing a 50-yard field goal? Apples to oranges maybe.
