  1. I find that plausible. I could see Cherington's role as sifting through all the information and putting forth proposals. It makes some sense knowing what we do about Lucchino's involvement, the Valentine hiring, the power struggle with Theo etc.
  2. Rebound from September/11 that is. On September 6/11 Lester had a 2.93 ERA. Then suddenly, he and the rest of the staff were mysteriously infected with the 'Cantpitchworthashit' virus, that still lingers.
  3. Come on, it's one bad season we're talking about. Lots of pitchers have bad seasons and rebound. I could cite lots of examples but it would bore the crap out of everyone.
  4. Most sports fans are arseholes, in their personas as sports fans.
  5. Lester's ERA throwing to Salty is 4.55.
  6. The Yankees have made the playoffs every goddam year since 1995, except one. There's gotta be something in that. I hate them too, but I respect that record. And the playoffs, generally speaking, are a crapshoot. The Giants almost got knocked out by both Cincy and St. Louis. They were down 3-1 to St. Louis, with Game 5 on the road, and their hopes pinned on Barry Zito LOL
  7. In his final 12 starts last year Lester had a 3.76 ERA and threw 79 innings, over 6.5 per start. He's hardly a writeoff.
  8. Interesting rumor, I'll be checking MLBTR as always but I'm not holding my breath on this one coming to reality.
  9. So out of Ortiz, Pedroia, Ellsbury and Middlebrooks, you're including 2 of them as garbage.
  10. I would agree that VMart and his contract are reasonable comps.
  11. e1, I think you did a good job encapsulating the payroll issues here.
  12. Full marks for a detailed, reasonable plan.
  13. If the payroll goes down to 140 this year it means the owners are taking 35-40 million of the money saved on the Dodgers trade and putting it right into their pockets. If that happens and we have a lousy team this year it's not going to be a pretty sight. I think the payroll will be more than that.
  14. a) Why do you expect it would be as low as 130M? Do you expect them to exceed the 189M cap in 2014 or any year after that?
  15. Sure. But he's also a good example of what I'm talking about. It'll probably cost at least $40 million to sign him. And you could make a good case that's he's a perfectly mediocre pitcher. A career ERA+ of 98, a WHIP of 1.44, an OPS against of .766. Postseason? ERA of 5.46, WHIP of 1.61.
  16. After Greinke the list of free agent starters just isn't that great. If we pass on all the ones who will be overpriced or have question marks, we pass on all of them. And a big chunk of money goes into our owners' pockets, where it will stay. Because they're not going to exceed the cap in 2014, that's for sure.
  17. Well, exactly. Sanchez has had 3 straight years of 195 innings so he seems totally healthy. I keep coming back to this but the Red Sox have about 70 million to spend this year without reaching the tax cap. They should be spending a pretty good chunk of that. And there aren't any bargain prices or sure things out there. No matter who they sign there will be question marks.
  18. Absolutely true. The more I think about it, they should sign Sanchez if it's not a totally outrageous deal. He should add some stability. The performance of the other four could go either way. I think we have to live with that prospect to start off 2013.
  19. That's a weird thing on Swisher. He's been pretty clutch in the regular season and horrendous in the postseason. No explanation for something like that except the mental factor.
  20. Here's a stat nugget I dug up on Napoli. In 238 AB's in the 5 AL East parks he has 19 HR's, which is one per 12.5 AB's, which is huge of course. And his worst ratio, 2 HR's in 50 AB's at Camden Yards, is still decent.
  21. This is funny because one of the knocks on Tito I've heard the most is that he would leave starters in too long until games were out of hand.
  22. The 2.6 billion and 100 million figures represent the assets that Henry's firm was managing for investors. Henry himself still has a net worth of 1.5 billion as of Sept/12 per Forbes magazine.
  23. If Napoli signs with Seattle it will not be a happy moment for Sox fans.
  24. Hopefully all the coaching changes will have a positive effect on both Lester and Buch.
  25. Agreed. They have to get this done. Give him the 4th year, for f***'s sake.
