  1. Cherington and the FO may have the mindset right now that they just unloaded a bunch of big contracts that were handcuffing them, do we really want to jump right into a new bunch of them? The Jays just took on 150+ million of contracts.
  2. This is sure gonna make it that much tougher for the Sox to sell the 'patient approach'...
  3. We have to keep in mind that the 2012 starters compiled an ERA of 5.19, the highest in franchise history.
  4. No question. But: 2011 Red Sox ERA with Varitek 3.57 Salty 4.62 2012 Shoppach 3.77 Salty 4.84 Some stunning similarities there.
  5. Salty is a backup catcher. He has a lot of pop from the left side so he should have a job for years to come.
  6. OK, thanks.
  7. Where is 700hitter? He hasn't posted since Sandy. Hopefully he's OK.
  8. I don't know what you're basing this on. Just last year, Pujols and Fielder got 10 year deals.
  9. We'll see what happens, but I haven't seen any evidence yet of teams being any more cautious about long term deals. This free agent season won't see too many big deals but only because there aren't many elite players on the market.
  10. I think somebody will be willing to give Hamilton $150 million or more, but with some protection clauses in the contract.
  11. Sanchez's numbers are not as good as Lackey's were at the time we signed him.
  12. Well, I guess it's a good thing that NESN ratings are heavily influenced by the quality of the product on the field.
  13. Ross pulled off the Triple Crown of Big Splits this year. 1.010 OPS vs. lefties .729 OPS vs. righties .921 at home .684 on road .915 first half .738 second half If you want a guy who murders lefties at home, especially in the first half of the season, he's your guy.
  14. It's really not that difficult. If you are objecting to someone 'defending the indefensible', then reply directly to the post you're talking about. Using the term 'people' is a total cop-out. And it's not like there is a huge crowd of posters here right now.
  15. Could you respond to specific posts instead of making generalized comments like that? Then whoever it is you're talking about can respond to you.
  16. There have to be some facts we don't have though. Otherwise somebody would have taken Haren.
  17. We don't know why the Cubs took their trade offer off the table at the last minute.
  18. Per Cafardo, Ortiz has texted 'We are getting close'.
  19. Never underestimate the irrational optimism of major league baseball executives. Within the last year we saw 32-year old Pujols signed for 10 years at 24 million per. We saw the Dodgers take on the AGon and Crawford contracts. 25 million is not that much money to the Rangers, especially when their big left-handed bat seems headed elsewhere.
  20. Heh heh...yep, that seems to be the way human nature works.
  21. Probably all that's going on is that David wants at least $25 million and the Red Sox don't want to move off $20 million.
  22. Huh? Youk was a good value at 41 million/10.25 million per year for the years 2009-2012. 13 million for 2013 is a whole other story.
  23. No idea. The last rule change in 1969 lowered the mound 6 inches or something like that, and it made a big difference. The 'informal' way to do it, I guess, would be to pass the word to umps to tighten up their strike zones.
  24. Different formulas have been successful. When the Red Sox won in 2004 and 2007 they had elite hitters and good to very good, but not great, starting pitching. Some teams have slugged their way to titles like the 2002 Angels. But in the postseason the balance usually tilts toward elite pitching, and this postseason we have really seen pitching dominate. Overall the balance in baseball has tilted toward pitching the last few years as runs scored have steadily declined. I wouldn't be surprised to see Selig make some sort of rules tweak to increase scoring, similar to what was done after 1968, because I think TV ratings this postseason have been hurt by the low scoring. We all like a good pitchers duel sometimes but a steady string of 2-1 and 2-0 games gets a little boring.
  25. This World Series is reminiscent of the 1966 Series which saw Baltimore sweep the Dodgers by scores of 5-2, 6-0, 1-0 and 1-0.
