  1. Don't you think it's a little strange that they made offers ranging from $70 million to $135 million, Kimmi?
  2. I think Crawford (142 million) and the A-Gon extension (154 million) were a little more than just 'lapses', Kimmi. I also think the non-retention of Lester is kind of a statement. This is a guy they would have kept if it was 5 years earlier, IMO.
  3. The Sox negotiations with Lester were flat-out weird from start to finish. It wouldn't surprise me to find out that they never really wanted to re-sign him because of their current thinking on big contracts for pitchers his age. But then you had those visits to his house by Henry in the latter stages - what was that all about? When it came down to it Lester eliminated all teams except the Cubs and the Sox. But the Cubs offer was $20 million higher and the Sox wouldn't budge. Who the hell knows what they were thinking at that point? About that opening offer though. Lester was clearly insulted by it and with good reason, when you look at all the circumstances. On Feb. 19 the Reds signed a deal with Homer Bailey for 6 years and $105 million. The Red Sox offer was exactly two-thirds of that.
  4. The Yankees philosophy on long term deals has certainly been hurting them the last few years especially. It remains to be seen if the current Red Sox philosophy on long term deals will result in sustained success or not - or even if they'll maintain it.
  5. Fred. Carpenter, Beato, Ohlendorf, Silva, Hottovy, and Bonser? You named 6 guys who pitched a grand total of 29.2 innings for the Red Sox. Ohlendorf and Silva never saw the uniform. Bonser pitched 2 innings in blowout games. Hottovy - 4 innings. The only one who was more than a blip was Beato, who racked up 17.2 innings with a 4.08 ERA. Not one of those 6 guys hurt us.
  6. How you achieve a strong back end of the pen may vary and may not be that important. But getting it somehow can be pretty important. Ask the Tigers. Their failure in having a good back end of the pen has cost them dearly.
  7. The best part is, we've got over 2 months more of pre-season prognostications to look forward to.
  8. It's not easy, sure. But last year we saw Lester and Price move at the deadline, and not for earth-shaking amounts of talent. And just because the Sox haven't done it in a while doesn't mean they wouldn't do it this year.
  9. My honest attitude about the rotation is this: I don't know jack. This is Cherington's baby. I think the plan was to focus on groundball pitchers because of the studies about the low strike zone and all that. Benny Boy is kind of putting himself on the line. I kind of like that. But I don't know how it's going to play out. I think it should be an interesting season.
  10. Please explain exactly what you didn't like about Porcello's 2014 season.
  11. I meant 20 M/Y total for the 3 of them.
  12. If Porcello, Miley and Kelly were older you could tack on another 20 million or so to their cost. Feel better now?
  13. Kelly is pre-arb so I think he gets the minimum. Nava got 1.85 million.
  14. Porcello 12.5 Buchholz 12.0 Masterson 9.5 Miley-arb-projected 4.3 Kelly pre-arb 0.6 Total 39 Some of the pricing is simply a result of the pitchers years of service.
  15. Yes. I have a lot of vivid memories of the late 70's teams.
  16. Injuries were a factor too of course.
  17. Welcome aboard, Ogden. I like your avatar. Freddie was one of my favorites. There were not many guys who made baseball look easier than he did when he was in top form.
  18. It's not that bad, really, once you get used to it. There is a group of smart posters and there are also some idiots. Pumpsie booted a few of the real trolls.
  19. I found it a bit sobering/perplexing that SoxProspects sees Owens's CEILING as a #3.
  20. Pumpsie is now a moderator on the Globe's Sox forum.
  21. Ross is a lefty but he has one of those funny old 'reverse splits' - he does better against RH hitters.
  22. They like Ross, obviously. You have to trust their scouting on this one.
  23. Adjace? Well, we're pretty adjacent to New England here. If Quebec had split from Canada I might be an American now.
  24. The only thing that can break the chain is for people to keep personal insults out of their posts. It's actually not that hard to do. But face it, UN, some guys like to scrap. They want to get the better of that other guy who pisses them off. That's why this stuff never ends.
