    There is a fairly obvious scenario where the Sox win: Price pitches well from here to end of Year 3, opts out, signs elsewhere for big money, then flops. We therefore get 3 good years and someone else pays the freight on the bad years. Like I said earlier, just look at what happened on the opt-out with Sabathia. The Yanks would have been better off letting him exercise it - which he would have if they didn't bend over and give him a further 2 years.

    Put it this way - in retrospect, the Yankees would have been far better off letting Sabathia opt out. It would have made that contract a good deal for them.

    It was especially disappointing after losing 5 of 6 at home to Minny and Detroit.

    Farrell has to be on thin ice. The team was supposed to be all-in on making the playoffs this year, and they are playing their way out of them.

    You do come up with some novel complaints. Not too many fans give a crap about or even know how much the managers get paid.

    Yeah but who's going to be getting on base in front of Mookie? If he's the only one hitting, we've got big problems, and changing the batting order is like switching deck chairs on the Titanic.

    We play 23 days in a row from Aug 9 to Aug 31. Even in a strict platoon he should get 15-16 starts. And of course they may also bring him into games he doesn't start.

    Sad, no. Disappointing, yes. I've tried to learn to be patient with these things. Porcello is another good example of why you can't judge these things right away.

    Just trying to take some pressure off him, I think. Not only is he playing his first MLB games and making the jump from AA, but he's joining the media-glared Boston Red Sox in the thick of a tight playoff race.

    Yes, this is possible. Now 6 of his solo HRs have led off games, and I think those have to be put in a separate category. A leadoff homer is a nice little weapon, especially when you consider the stats on what % of games are won by the team that scores first. You may also have to look at the circumstances that contribute to leadoff homers-the pitcher is not really into his rhythm yet etc.

    That's nonsensical. We're 13-14 in one-run games. Means nothing one way or the other.

    That's a little harsh. None of Dombrowski's moves can be ruled busts yet either.

    The offense has been struggling lately. In 8 of the last 13 games they've scored 3 runs or less. So it may be time to make a change. But I see no reason to think that having Mookie in the leadoff spot has impaired our run-scoring. He leads the team in runs scored with 85 and he's second in RBI with 73. He's scoring runs and driving them in, the best of both worlds. And I don't really like the idea of reducing his plate appearances. There's no hard cold empirical evidence that we would have scored more runs if we swapped Betts and Pedroia or Betts and Bogey - none that I'm aware of, anyway.

    Since July 1 Mookie is hitting 373/411/678. The premise of wanting to move him was largely based on his low OBP. Why would you want to move him when he has been red hot in every phase of offense including OBP?

    OK. But we didn't have many other options for third base, until they got Hill.

    The bottom line is, Red Sox management knows all these numbers every bit as well as we do, and they know other stuff we don't know, and they prefer Mookie in the leadoff spot. He certainly seems to be thriving there.

    Sox play every day from Aug 9 to Aug 31. Maybe we should give this a couple of weeks to see how it plays out...I think Beni will be playing a whole lot by the time it's all said and done.

    We face a righty today, lefty tomorrow and day off Monday. Will Farrell start him tomorrow against Hill? If not that'll be 2 more days off in a row. That'll go over well here.

    If the story by Olney is accurate, the issue with Pomeranz must be minor, because the Sox aren't looking for any modifications.
