It's a great deal for the Yanks, but from a Sox perspective it's not equivalent to the Ruth purchase/steal. For one thing, we HAD Ruth.

A hitter like Stanton will help the Yanks win some low scoring games, too, you do realize that? He's a 6-8 WAR player if he stays healthy. A 6-8 WAR player does make a pretty big difference in the W-L record.

He could. But reportedly Stanton only had 4 places he was willing to go, and Boston wasn't one of them.

With Castro going to the Marlins, this only adds 14 million to the Yankees payroll for tax purposes the next 2 years.

Kershaw is under contract until 2020. Were you thinking of Machado? They're easy to mix up.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think there are any franchises in baseball that can claim to have had a lot of great all-around catchers. It's a very tough position that wears down the body rapidly.

There's been talk about Machado getting a deal in the same range as Bryce Harper. But his OPS+ this year was an unimpressive 107. Wouldn't be surprising to see him have a big walk year, though.
