  1. The only thing that's inaccurate is that Jackso would probably have conceded we had the better offense.
  2. Under the assumption someone was willing to pick up Young's tab.
  3. The best fastballs are the ones with 'late life', though.
  4. You can do all the head-to-head comparisons you want, but it's the X factors that will probably decide it. Red Sox X factors: How big of a boost will we see from the following factors? -JDM -More aggressive approach -Return to form from Betts and Bogaerts How healthy will David Price be? How well will our 'bridge to Kimbrel' hold up with Smith, Kelly, Barnes, Workman, Thornburg (?) et al?
  5. There's also Jake Peavy. I would go with Buchholz and Peavy, for old times' sake.
  6. As you know, last year we might have signed EE if it wasn't for the mandate to reset the tax rate.
  7. That play by Manny was one of the best of all time. I had completely forgotten that it was Kevin Millar that hit that ball.
  8. Exactly. GM's do not have crystal balls.
  9. I don't see how. That was over 3 years ago.
  10. I'm hoping for a good year for Rick. But I think even he would tell you that 2 out of his 3 seasons with us have been disappointing ones. His durability is certainly a big plus though.
  11. Might be even better if he used his middle name - Casey.
  12. Some new additions: White Sox prospect-unfortunately out for the season: Jake Burger Pitching for Pittsburgh today: Damien Magnifico
  13. Hanley has been hitting 3rd.
  14. I'd be quite happy if Porcello gives us another 195 innings, with an ERA of 4.25 or less.
  15. I don't think so. 42 wins, 36 losses, 16 no-decisions.
  16. I think the starting pitching will likely be the deciding factor over 162 games.
  17. With a pitcher like Porcello, Quality Starts and Quality Start % would be a meaningful stat, I think.
  18. You might say when it came to hitting, Ted Williams had a powerful computer in his head.
  19. There is no other sport as conducive to superstition as baseball. It's a beautiful game; it's also a weird and freaky game, and that's part of its appeal.
  20. All things considered we were a bit lucky there were no other bidders. At the start of the offseason I figured JD would probably get the 6/150 that MLBTR predicted.
  21. Ask harmony. And while you're at it, remind him that he lost his bet. He took the field against the Red Sox.
  22. I have a lot of respect for the advanced metrics. But Porcello's 2017 fWAR of 2.0 really seems bogus. His 2017 bWAR was minus .2, which would give him a dollar value of...he owes us some money back.
  23. Full marks for this.
  24. Some of a catcher's value doesn't show up on the stat sheet though.
