  1. Problem is there's not much reason to have confidence this is part of an integrated plan that makes sense rather than just more throwing stuff at the wall. My suspicion is that the relatively tight budget makes Brez feel like he has to do "creative" stuff like this rather than the obvious move of signing a good starter who's ready to go.
  2. Good point, Nick, why not invest this kind of money in the bullpen instead? Our bullpen was a big weakness last year and at this point it looks no better, and probably worse, with Jansen and Martin out, Chapman and Wilson in. Still smells a lot like dysfunction at the top.
  3. This part kind of says it all. This is a similar move to the signing of Liam Hendricks last offseason, as it features a rehabbing pitcher eyeing a midseason return, although Hendricks suffered several setbacks and ultimately was unable to make his Red Sox debut before the end of the year. The "whoopsy-daisy" factor is way too common in these deals, but the Red Sox never seem to lose their appetite for them...
  4. It does seem a tad ironic that they're so into these pitcher reclamation projects, but gave up on the 2024 NL Cy Young winner.
  5. I'd say he wants multi-rings, like every other crazed fan.
  6. Nice, you just summed up Cohen perfectly in 7 words! He does have some baseball smarts too, as evidenced by getting a good CBO in Stearns.
  7. There continues to be a vast difference in payroll between the two teams, with the Yanks currently sitting at about $284 mill for tax purposes and the Sox at $176 mill.
  8. How do we know every signing and offer doesn't go through votes or whatever now? We really have no clue how they're running things. When it comes to that stuff they keep secrets better than the Mafia.
  9. The guys at Over the Monster, who I think do some great work, have indicated that they think Breslow has been delivering subtle little messages that he'd like to be doing things differently (being more aggressive) but his control over what's going on is very limited.
  10. IMHO this is symptomatic of the Sox: a) being a component of Fenway Sports Group, answerable to many powerful shareholders, and b) having too many voices involved in operations. It's clear that something just isn't right, that there's confusion and dysfunction about which way to go. And the Interest Kings thing is becoming embarrassing. It's something the Sox are becoming notorious for. Why would they want that? It makes no sense.
  11. That's certainly how he sees it. Hasn't been the same since. But it was peanuts compared to the $475 million Cohen expended on 2023.
  12. No, I really don't see things in such simplistic terms. But yeah, I think it does ultimately matter that Cohen is not only worth 3-4 times as much as JH, but he has no one to answer to the way JH does. It's why Cohen can withstand a $475 million fiasco like 2023 and just smile and keep on trucking.
  13. Right, but when we're #2 it's a bit more stimulating and there's hope of adding another silver medal to the Interest Kings hardware.
  14. Cohen didn't have to spend $250M than he did for Soto, so that's all in Hypothetical Never-Never Land. All he had to do was beat the Yanks, and he knew the Yanks would be just a bit more rational than him. As for Burnes, I can deal with this hypothetical. It's quite possible that while Cohen thinks Soto is worth every penny, he's not nearly as big on Burnes.
  15. The only surprising thing about this proposal from moon was that he left out Wink. Usually he bundles Abreu, DHam and Wink.
  16. I think drewski posted that BTV showed a fair swap would be Jones for Abreu plus another player with a +10 surplus. It seemed a bit light in the real world.
  17. Can't even get interested, because I suspect the Sox are probably about 25th on the list of teams he's looking at.
  18. He's just trying to keep things fair for the rest of us, moon. (Seems like you and me have potential for a long running debate/joke about moneybags Cohen. 🙂)
  19. Right. And Cohen's Mets are not cost-effective. They've incurred some heavy bottom line losses. The Mets are a vanity asset and labor of love for Cohen, obviously. He's living out a fantasy of owning his favorite sports team. And he wants to deliver rings to that team, badly.
  20. "We three Kings* of Interest are Bearing unserious offers we traverse afar" * Henry, Werner, Kennedy (Just wanted to throw in something in the holiday spirit.)
  21. Of course money isn't nothing to him. That's a straw man. You don't get that rich without having a lot of love for money. Cohen is crazy but he's not a fool, you might say. He's the guy who wants it all. He wants to outspend everyone else when necessary, but he also wants to be the smartest guy when necessary. And he's got a pretty smart CBO now in Stearns. And the new manager seemed to do a good job in 2024.
  22. Of course he wouldn't go to 1.6 billion, that was just moon playing in his hypotheticals room. The fact is he didn't have to! I think Steve Cohen is very familiar with the joke about the two guys running away from a bear: You don't have to outrace the bear. You just have to outrace your buddy. In this case the buddy was Hal Steinbrenner. And Hal did reportedly have a chance to equal or beat Cohen's winning offer, but he decided he'd had enough and it was time to lay down.
