  1. That's what doesn't show up in the fWAR.
  2. He probably views himself as de facto head of business operations, but that's a little cumbersome...
  3. I don't think we should be pointing a finger at him. The guy is remembered for 2 things and they're both embarrassing.
  4. I wouldn't say that. He was the starting catcher for the champs. Cora showed trust in him as a defender, giving him most of the starts in the playoffs. His contract is very reasonable. But his value would depend on how other GM's value his defense. It's all kind of a non-issue anyway...
  5. It's true. You can't really find one rule of thumb that plays out consistently across every postseason. I was fond of that argument about needing a great closer for the postseason myself because of Foulke, Papelbon and Koji. But the last 2 postseasons have contradicted that rule big time.
  6. Serious question or just razzing about the negative WAR? Vazquez's 'long-term contract', of course, is only 3 years at about 4.5 mill. You only have to post an fWAR of about 0.6 to earn 4.5 mill these days... Besides which, surely the defensive value of a catcher is one of the most difficult things to measure with WAR...
  7. Dojji, if Kimbrel had had a good postseason this year I would agree with you. But the fact is he had a horrendous postseason. 10.2 innings 9 hits 8 walks 2 HBP 2 HR 7 ER .842 OPSa We were fortunate that our other late inning relievers (including our starters) were rock solid, and also that we made some defensive plays behind Kimbrel. Because he was shaky to put it kindly.
  8. His annual salary was close to the top, that's true. But it was very favorable in other respects. The guarantee was only about 25 million. That's only about half of Papelbon's and Robertson's guaranteed deals. Plus the team option for a third year. That's a very team-friendly arrangement.
  9. I agree. Here's something truly frightening to consider. Over the last 3 years, Harper's total fWAR is 11.3 Over the same period: Trout 26.3 Betts 23.9 So if Harper really is worth 400 million, then by extrapolation: Trout is worth 931 million Betts is worth 846 million
  10. FWIW, Cafardo in the Globe today says he thinks the Sox are moving on from Kimbrel and that their top priority is Eovaldi.
  11. Everything aligned perfectly for the 2018 Red Sox. You take a team that was close but no cigar 2 years in a row and not losing much from those teams. You add a fantastic manager, a fantastic slugger, and 2 incredibly good deadline acquisitions, and you should be ready to kick some butt.
  12. It was a very favorable contract, though, that can't be overlooked. If Kimbrel was a free agent that year, you certainly weren't getting him for guaranteed money of only $25 million. It just so happens there were no other closers on the free agent market that year so there are no simple comps. But we know what Chapman and Jansen got the following year.
  13. Harper's looking for more like $400 million.
  14. We might not have won it without adding Eovaldi and Pearce, either. We likely wouldn't have won it if David Price didn't suddenly transform into postseason beast. That's the thing about baseball, there are so many pieces in the puzzle. Your first three words said it all 'We'll never know'. You can't really give out awards based on guesses about what would or wouldn't have happened.
  15. I agree. My guess would be he makes an early offer to Kimbrel, more like 4/70 than 5/100, and if that doesn't do it he'll look elsewhere. He's certainly not thinking the 2018 bullpen minus Kimbrel and Kelly will be good enough.
  16. But when he was negotiating the Kimbrel trade, he had already asked JH how much he could have to sign Price, and JH replied 'Whatever it takes.'
  17. JD will be a Silver Slugger.
  18. And all the boo birds are flying south for the winter.
  19. You could be right, but 'impactful' is a pretty tough thing to measure.
  20. This offseason might be boring from a Sox perspective, but it'll be interesting to see what the Yanks and other teams do, and to see what Harper and Machado sign for.
  21. It's next to impossible for a DH type to win the MVP, now more than ever. I'd say JDM was clearly the most valuable offensive player this year.
  22. It'll be very bad news if Harper and Machado do get around $400 million. What will that make Mookie worth - $500 million?
  23. The guys who posted on this page are all Yankee fans.
  24. He might not even know them himself yet. But speculate we will, by God!
  25. But you're saying it like it's a bad thing.
