  1. It's kind of funny how excited we get at the prospect of finding a gold nugget in the trash.
  2. That just doesn't sound right somehow. This was supposed to be the offseason of the megadeal, and the Yanks reset their tax rate for it. I'll be shocked if the Yanks don't sign one of Machado or Harper.
  3. 'Everyone else' doesn't get paid in line with performance. Anyway you can't compare employment in major league baseball to other jobs. It's a unique system. Teams have players under their complete control for the first 6 years. A young player might be MVP and get paid minimum wage, and they don't get paid an extra $50 million for that, do they? If the player is still around after those 6 years they get their crack at their big payday in free agency and they get the upper hand. It all pretty much balances out at the end of the day. The teams aren't suffering financially, that's for sure.
  4. Yes. He was hired as GM before the 2003 season.
  5. One of Theo's finest moments, if not the finest, pulling the trigger on that trade as a rookie GM.
  6. 2004 second baseman = my screen name.
  7. Ease up man, it was not meant to be a serious proposal. I've already said on this very thread that the Hall is what it is.
  8. You think Baines should be in?
  9. If they had the guts, they'd divide the Hall into 2 wings, one for the Great and one for the Very Good.
  10. It's high time to tweak the Quality Start parameters. In today's game, 5 innings and 1 run or less is golden.
  11. I think the Serenity Prayer applies here, or the one about not being able to put the excrement back in the equine.
  12. Yes, in both cases.
  13. I respect the anti-Yankee bias, but Eovaldi is at least as much of a health risk as Paxton. Don't get me wrong, I like the Eovaldi signing. But the Paxton trade was a good move by Cashman.
  14. The highest paid player in the majors (and in history) by AAV is Zack Greinke at $34.4 million.
  15. Incorrect, Nick. Amounts that sit above the $40 M tier will be taxed at 75% to us in 2019. 206 million is the threshold. 206 million to 226 million will be taxed at 30%. 226 million to 246 million will be taxed at 42% (30+12) Over 246 million will be taxed at 75% (30+45) You're doubling up the 12%. The highest rate we can pay in 2019 is 75%. For a third-time offender the highest rate is 95% (50+45)
  16. Players deserve some protection too, though. They have short careers. The only guys that get the ridiculously long contracts are the megastars, and that's because owners and fans alike want the big talent on their team and will outbid the other ones that want the same big talent on their team.
  17. 12% is the surtax if you exceed the cap by 20 to 40 million. Here's a good article on the penalty rates: https://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=19&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwisq_6W66rfAhVmm-AKHVAPBcY4ChAWMAh6BAgBEAE&url=https%3A%2F%2Fthegruelingtruth.net%2Fbaseball%2Fluxury-tax-implications-for-the-2019-red-sox%2F&usg=AOvVaw34WEHsWp6vgFGgW16s_F9S
  18. I get 8.3 million. 30% tax 45% surtax for being 40 million over threshold 2 years in a row 75% total tax rate
  19. Interesting. Cot's shows JD's contract like this: 23.75/23.75/23.75/19.375/19.375 I had thought it was 25/25/20/20/20
  20. I saw that article too. But the values don't match up with the values they actually use in their player tables.
  21. I'm afraid you've gone into Mister Magoo land. In 2017 the value of 1 WAR was not 10.5 mill, it was about 7.9 mill. Justin Verlander 2017 fWAR 4.1 $ value 32.5
  22. I don't think this is right. As harmony said, FanGraphs estimate of the value of one fWAR when Cano signed was more like $7 mill. They adjust it every year but they don't make any retroactive adjustments. If there is an escalation in salaries, it does make long term deals look a little better, rightfully so.
  23. Just think what it would have been like if there was a Talksox forum back in 1919 when Frazee sold Ruth to the Yanks.
  24. The Castillo situation is so bizarre. The Sox can't let him even play one game for the big team without it costing them millions in tax. So instead they have to keep paying him about 11 mill a year to play in Pawtucket until the end of 2020.
  25. Babe Ruth must have been an incredible athlete to do what he did.
